204 PH/02 When an IPv6 address is converted to a string for single-key lookup
205 in an address list (e.g. for an item such as "net24-dbm;/net/works"),
206 dots are used instead of colons so that keys in lsearch files need not
207 contain colons. This was done some time before quoting was made available
208 in lsearch files. However, iplsearch files do require colons in IPv6 keys
209 (notated using the quote facility) so as to distinguish them from IPv4
210 keys. This meant that lookups for IP addresses in host lists did not work
211 for iplsearch lookups.
213 This has been fixed by arranging for IPv6 addresses to be expressed with
214 colons if the lookup type is iplsearch. This is not incompatible, because
215 previously such lookups could never work.
217 The situation is now rather anomolous, since one *can* have colons in
218 ordinary lsearch keys. However, making the change in all cases is
219 incompatible and would probably break a number of configurations.
221 TK/01 Change PRVS address formatting scheme to reflect latests BATV draft
224 MH/01 The "spam" ACL condition code contained a sscanf() call with a %s
225 conversion specification without a maximum field width, thereby enabling
226 a rogue spamd server to cause a buffer overflow. While nobody in their
227 right mind would setup Exim to query an untrusted spamd server, an
228 attacker that gains access to a server running spamd could potentially
229 exploit this vulnerability to run arbitrary code as the Exim user.
231 TK/02 Bugzilla 502: Apply patch to make the SPF-Received: header use
232 $primary_hostname instead of what libspf2 thinks the hosts name is.
234 MH/02 The dsearch lookup now uses lstat(2) instead of stat(2) to look for
235 a directory entry by the name of the lookup key. Previously, if a
236 symlink pointed to a non-existing file or a file in a directory that
237 Exim lacked permissions to read, a lookup for a key matching that

414 better access to the recipient list through recipients_list[], but
415 $recipients can be useful in postmaster-provided expansion strings.
417 PH/28 The $smtp_command and $smtp_command_argument variables were not correct
418 in the case of a MAIL command with additional options following the
419 address, for example: MAIL FROM:<foo@bar> SIZE=1234. The option settings
420 were accidentally chopped off.
422 PH/29 SMTP synchronization checks are implemented when a command is read -
423 there is a check that no more input is waiting when there shouldn't be
424 any. However, for some commands, a delay in an ACL can mean that it is
425 some time before the response is written. In this time, more input might
426 arrive, invalidly. So now there are extra checks after an ACL has run for
427 HELO/EHLO and after the predata ACL, and likewise for MAIL and RCPT when
428 pipelining has not been advertised.
430 PH/30 MH's patch to allow iscntrl() characters to be list separators.
432 PH/31 Unlike :fail:, a custom message specified with :defer: was not being
433 returned in the SMTP response when smtp_return_error_details was false.
436 PH/32 Change the Dovecot authenticator to use read() and write() on the socket
437 instead of the C I/O that was originally supplied, because problems were
440 PH/33 Compile failed with OpenSSL 0.9.8e. This was due to a coding error in
441 Exim which did not show up earlier: it was assuming that a call to
442 SSL_CTX_set_info_callback() might give an error value. In fact, there is
443 no error. In previous releases of OpenSSL, SSL_CTX_set_info_callback()
444 was a macro that became an assignment, so it seemed to work. This has
445 changed to a proper function call with a void return, hence the compile
446 error. Exim's code has been fixed.
448 PH/34 Change HDA_SIZE in oracle.c from 256 to 512. This is needed for 64-bit
451 PH/35 Applied a patch from the Sieve maintainer which fixes a bug in "notify".
453 PH/36 Applied John Jetmore's patch to add -v functionality to exigrep.
455 PH/37 If a message is not accepted after it has had an id assigned (e.g.
456 because it turns out to be too big or there is a timeout) there is no
457 "Completed" line in the log. When some messages of this type were
458 selected by exigrep, they were listed as "not completed". Others were
459 picked up by some special patterns. I have improved the selection
460 criteria to be more general.
462 PH/38 The host_find_failed option in the manualroute router can now be set
463 to "ignore", to completely ignore a host whose IP address cannot be
464 found. If all hosts are ignored, the behaviour is controlled by the new
465 host_all_ignored option.
467 PH/39 In a list of hosts for manualroute, if one item (either because of multi-
468 homing or because of multiple MX records with /mx) generated more than
469 one IP address, and the following item turned out to be the local host,
470 all the secondary addresses of the first item were incorrectly removed
471 from the list, along with the local host and any following hosts (which
472 is what is supposed to happen).
474 PH/40 When Exim receives a message, it writes the login name, uid, and gid of
475 whoever called Exim into the -H file. In the case of the daemon it was
476 behaving confusingly. When first started, it used values for whoever
477 started the daemon, but after a SIGHUP it used the Exim user (because it
478 calls itself on a restart). I have changed the code so that it now always
481 PH/41 (Following a suggestion from Tony Finch) If all the RCPT commands in a
482 message are rejected with the same error (e.g. no authentication or bad
483 sender address), and a DATA command is nevertheless sent (as can happen
484 with PIPELINING or a stupid MUA), the error message that was given to the
485 RCPT commands is included in the rejection of the DATA command. This is

501 PH/44 I found a way to check for a TCP/IP connection going away before sending
502 the response to the final '.' that terminates a message, but only in the
503 case where the client has not sent further data following the '.'
504 (unfortunately, this is allowed). However, in many cases there won't be
505 any further data because there won't be any more messages to send. A call
506 to select() can be used: if it shows that the input is "ready", there is
507 either input waiting, or the socket has been closed. An attempt to read
508 the next input character can distinguish the two cases. Previously, Exim
509 would have sent an OK response which the client would never have see.
510 This could lead to message repetition. This fix should cure that, at
511 least in a lot of common cases.
513 PH/45 Do not advertise STARTTLS in response to HELP unless it would be
514 advertised in response to EHLO.
520 PH/01 Two more bugs that were introduced by 4.64/PH/07, in addition to the one
521 fixed by 4.65/MH/01 (is this a record?) are fixed:
523 (i) An empty string was always treated as zero by the numeric comparison
524 operators. This behaviour has been restored.
526 (ii) It is documented that the numeric comparison operators always treat
527 their arguments as decimal numbers. This was broken in that numbers
528 starting with 0 were being interpreted as octal.
530 While fixing these problems I realized that there was another issue that
531 hadn't been noticed. Values of message_size_limit (both the global option
532 and the transport option) were treated as octal if they started with 0.
533 The documentation was vague. These values are now always treated as
534 decimal, and I will make that clear in the documentation.
540 TK/01 Disable default definition of HAVE_LINUX_SENDFILE. Clashes with
541 Linux large file support (_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64) on older glibc
544 MH/01 Don't check that the operands of numeric comparison operators are
545 integers when their expansion is in "skipping" mode (fixes bug
546 introduced by 4.64-PH/07).
548 PH/01 If a system filter or a router generates more than SHRT_MAX (32767)
549 child addresses, Exim now panics and dies. Previously, because the count
550 is held in a short int, deliveries were likely to be lost. As such a
551 large number of recipients for a single message is ridiculous
552 (performance will be very, very poor), I have chosen to impose a limit
553 rather than extend the field.
559 TK/01 Bugzilla #401. Fix DK spooling code so that it can overwrite a
560 leftover -K file (the existence of which was triggered by #402).
561 While we were at it, introduced process PID as part of the -K
562 filename. This should rule out race conditions when creating
565 TK/02 Bugzilla #402. Apply patch from Simon Arlott, speeding up DK signing
566 processing considerably. Previous code took too long for large mails,
567 triggering a timeout which in turn triggers #401.
569 TK/03 Introduced HAVE_LINUX_SENDFILE to os.h-Linux. Currently only used
570 in the DK code in transports.c. sendfile() is not really portable,

573 TF/01 In the add_headers option to the mail command in an Exim filter,
574 there was a bug that Exim would claim a syntax error in any
575 header after the first one which had an odd number of characters
578 PH/01 If a server that rejects MAIL FROM:<> was the target of a sender
579 callout verification, Exim cached a "reject" for the entire domain. This
580 is correct for most verifications, but it is not correct for a recipient
581 verification with use_sender or use_postmaster set, because in that case
582 the callout does not use MAIL FROM:<>. Exim now distinguishes the special
583 case of MAIL FROM:<> rejection from other early rejections (e.g.
584 rejection of HELO). When verifying a recipient using a non-null MAIL
585 address, the cache is ignored if it shows MAIL FROM:<> rejection.
586 Whatever the result of the callout, the value of the domain cache is
587 left unchanged (for any other kind of callout, getting as far as trying
588 RCPT means that the domain itself is ok).
590 PH/02 Tidied a number of unused variable and signed/unsigned warnings that

616 JJ/02 exipick 20060919.0, --show-vars args can now be regular expressions,

619 PH/10 Added the log_reject_target ACL modifier to specify where to log
622 PH/11 Callouts were setting the name used for EHLO/HELO from $smtp_active_
623 hostname. This is wrong, because it relates to the incoming message (and
624 probably the interface on which it is arriving) and not to the outgoing
625 callout (which could be using a different interface). This has been
626 changed to use the value of the helo_data option from the smtp transport
627 instead - this is what is used when a message is actually being sent. If
628 there is no remote transport (possible with a router that sets up host
629 addresses), $smtp_active_hostname is used.
631 PH/12 Installed Andrey Panin's patch to add a dovecot authenticator. Various
632 tweaks were necessary in order to get it to work (see also 21 below):
633 (a) The code assumed that strncpy() returns a negative number on buffer
634 overflow, which isn't the case. Replaced with Exim's string_format()
636 (b) There were several signed/unsigned issues. I just did the minimum
637 hacking in of casts. There is scope for a larger refactoring.
638 (c) The code used strcasecmp() which is not a standard C function.
639 Replaced with Exim's strcmpic() function.
640 (d) The code set only $1; it now sets $auth1 as well.
641 (e) A simple test gave the error "authentication client didn't specify
642 service in request". It would seem that Dovecot has changed its
643 interface. Fortunately there's a specification; I followed it and
644 changed what the client sends and it appears to be working now.
646 PH/13 Added $message_headers_raw to provide the headers without RFC 2047
649 PH/14 Corrected misleading output from -bv when -v was also used. Suppose the
650 address A is aliased to B and C, where B exists and C does not. Without
651 -v the output is "A verified" because verification stops after a
652 successful redirection if more than one address is generated. However,
653 with -v the child addresses are also verified. Exim was outputting "A
654 failed to verify" and then showing the successful verification for C,
655 with its parentage. It now outputs "B failed to verify", showing B's
656 parentage before showing the successful verification of C.
658 PH/15 Applied Michael Deutschmann's patch to allow DNS black list processing to
659 look up a TXT record in a specific list after matching in a combined
662 PH/16 It seems that the options setting for the resolver (RES_DEFNAMES and
663 RES_DNSRCH) can affect the behaviour of gethostbyname() and friends when
664 they consult the DNS. I had assumed they would set it the way they
665 wanted; and indeed my experiments on Linux seem to show that in some
666 cases they do (I could influence IPv6 lookups but not IPv4 lookups).
667 To be on the safe side, however, I have now made the interface to
668 host_find_byname() similar to host_find_bydns(), with an argument
669 containing the DNS resolver options. The host_find_byname() function now
670 sets these options at its start, just as host_find_bydns() does. The smtp
671 transport options dns_qualify_single and dns_search_parents are passed to
672 host_find_byname() when gethostbyname=TRUE in this transport. Other uses
673 of host_find_byname() use the default settings of RES_DEFNAMES
674 (qualify_single) but not RES_DNSRCH (search_parents).
676 PH/17 Applied (a modified version of) Nico Erfurth's patch to make
677 spool_read_header() do less string testing, by means of a preliminary
678 switch on the second character of optional "-foo" lines. (This is
679 overdue, caused by the large number of possibilities that now exist.
680 Originally there were few.) While I was there, I also converted the
681 str(n)cmp tests so they don't re-test the leading "-" and the first
682 character, in the hope this might squeeze out yet more improvement.
684 PH/18 Two problems with "group" syntax in header lines when verifying: (1) The
685 flag allowing group syntax was set by the header_syntax check but not
686 turned off, possible causing trouble later; (2) The flag was not being
687 set at all for the header_verify test, causing "group"-style headers to
688 be rejected. I have now set it in this case, and also caused header_
689 verify to ignore an empty address taken from a group. While doing this, I
690 came across some other cases where the code for allowing group syntax
691 while scanning a header line wasn't quite right (mostly, not resetting
692 the flag correctly in the right place). These bugs could have caused
693 trouble for malformed header lines. I hope it is now all correct.
695 PH/19 The functions {pwcheck,saslauthd}_verify_password() are always called
696 with the "reply" argument non-NULL. The code, however (which originally
697 came from elsewhere) had *some* tests for NULL when it wrote to *reply,
698 but it didn't always do it. This confused somebody who was copying the
699 code for some other use. I have removed all the tests.
701 PH/20 It was discovered that the GnuTLS code had support for RSA_EXPORT, a
702 feature that was used to support insecure browsers during the U.S. crypto
703 embargo. It requires special client support, and Exim is probably the
704 only MTA that supported it -- and would never use it because real RSA is
705 always available. This code has been removed, because it had the bad
706 effect of slowing Exim down by computing (never used) parameters for the
707 RSA_EXPORT functionality.
709 PH/21 On the advice of Timo Sirainen, added a check to the dovecot
710 authenticator to fail if there's a tab character in the incoming data
711 (there should never be unless someone is messing about, as it's supposed
712 to be base64-encoded). Also added, on Timo's advice, the "secured" option
713 if the connection is using TLS or if the remote IP is the same as the
714 local IP, and the "valid-client-cert option" if a client certificate has
717 PH/22 As suggested by Dennis Davis, added a server_condition option to *all*
718 authenticators. This can be used for authorization after authentication

737 before concatenation. Completely empty headers in a concatenation (as
740 PH/28 Fixed bug in backwards-compatibility feature of PH/09 (thanks to John
741 Jetmore). It would have mis-read ACL variables from pre-4.61 spool files.
743 PH/29 [Removed. This was a change that I later backed out, and forgot to
744 correct the ChangeLog entry (that I had efficiently created) before
745 committing the later change.]
747 PH/30 Exim was sometimes attempting to deliver messages that had suffered
748 address errors (4xx response to RCPT) over the same connection as other
749 messages routed to the same hosts. Such deliveries are always "forced",
750 so retry times are not inspected. This resulted in far too many retries
751 for the affected addresses. The effect occurred only when there were more
752 hosts than the hosts_max_try setting in the smtp transport when it had
753 the 4xx errors. Those hosts that it had tried were not added to the list
754 of hosts for which the message was waiting, so if all were tried, there
755 was no problem. Two fixes have been applied:
757 (i) If there are any address or message errors in an SMTP delivery, none
758 of the hosts (tried or untried) are now added to the list of hosts
759 for which the message is waiting, so the message should not be a
760 candidate for sending over the same connection that was used for a
761 successful delivery of some other message. This seems entirely
762 reasonable: after all the message is NOT "waiting for some host".
763 This is so "obvious" that I'm not sure why it wasn't done
764 previously. Hope I haven't missed anything, but it can't do any
765 harm, as the worst effect is to miss an optimization.
767 (ii) If, despite (i), such a delivery is accidentally attempted, the
768 routing retry time is respected, so at least it doesn't keep
769 hammering the server.
771 PH/31 Installed Andrew Findlay's patch to close the writing end of the socket
772 in ${readsocket because some servers need this prod.
774 PH/32 Added some extra debug output when updating a wait-xxx database.
776 PH/33 The hint "could be header name not terminated by colon", which has been
777 given for certain expansion errors for a long time, was not being given
778 for the ${if def:h_colon_omitted{... case.
780 PH/34 The spec says: "With one important exception, whenever a domain list is
781 being scanned, $domain contains the subject domain." There was at least
782 one case where this was not true.
784 PH/35 The error "getsockname() failed: connection reset by peer" was being
785 written to the panic log as well as the main log, but it isn't really
786 panic-worthy as it just means the connection died rather early on. I have
787 removed the panic log writing for the ECONNRESET error when getsockname()
790 PH/36 After a 4xx response to a RCPT error, that address was delayed (in queue
791 runs only) independently of the message's sender address. This meant
792 that, if the 4xx error was in fact related to the sender, a different
793 message to the same recipient with a different sender could confuse
794 things. In particualar, this can happen when sending to a greylisting
795 server, but other circumstances could also provoke similar problems.
796 I have changed the default so that the retry time for these errors is now

1064 PH/01 ${readsocket now supports Internet domain sockets (modified John Jetmore
1067 PH/02 When tcp-wrappers is called from Exim, it returns only "deny" or "allow".
1068 "Deny" causes Exim to reject the incoming connection with a 554 error.
1069 Unfortunately, if there is a major crisis, such as a disk failure,
1070 tcp-wrappers gives "deny", whereas what one would like would be some
1071 kind of temporary error. A kludge has been added to help with this.
1072 Before calling hosts_ctl(), errno is set zero. If the result is "deny", a
1073 554 error is used if errno is still zero or contains ENOENT (which occurs

1097 PH/09 If maildir_quota_directory_regex was set to exclude (say) the .Trash
1098 folder from quota calculations, a direct delivery into this folder messed
1099 up the contents of the maildirsize file. This was because the regex was
1100 used only to exclude .Trash (or whatever) when the size of the mailbox
1101 was calculated. There was no check that a delivery was happening into an
1102 excluded directory. This bug has been fixed by ignoring all quota
1103 processing for deliveries into excluded directories.
1105 PH/10 Added the maildirfolder_create_regex option to appendfile.
1111 PH/01 The code for finding all the local interface addresses on a FreeBSD
1112 system running IPv6 was broken. This may well have applied to all BSD
1113 systems, as well as to others that have similar system calls. The broken
1114 code found IPv4 interfaces correctly, but gave incorrect values for the
1115 IPv6 interfaces. In particular, ::1 was not found. The effect in Exim was
1116 that it would not match correctly against @[] and not recognize the IPv6
1119 PH/02 The ipliteral router was not recognizing addresses of the form user@
1120 [ipv6:....] because it didn't know about the "ipv6:" prefix.
1122 PH/03 Added disable_ipv6.
1124 PH/04 Changed $reply_address to use the raw form of the headers instead of the

1169 PH/12 In the smtp transport, treat an explicit ECONNRESET error the same as

1172 PH/13 Domain literals for IPv6 were not recognized unless IPv6 support was
1173 compiled. In many other places in Exim, IPv6 addresses are always
1174 recognized, so I have changed this. It also means that IPv4 domain
1175 literals of the form [IPV4:n.n.n.n] are now always recognized.
1177 PH/14 When a uid/gid is specified for the queryprogram router, it cannot be
1178 used if the router is not running as root, for example, when verifying at
1179 ACL time, or when using -bh. The debugging output from this situation was
1180 non-existent - all you got was a failure to exec. I have made two
1183 (a) Failures to set uid/gid, the current directory, or a process leader
1184 in a subprocess such as that created by queryprogram now generate
1185 suitable debugging ouput when -d is set.
1187 (b) The queryprogram router detects when it is not running as root,

1191 PH/15 Minor change to Makefile for building test_host (undocumented testing

1195 additional section of a DNS packet that returns MX or SRV records.

1318 the files. Exim runs with umask(0) because the rest of the code creates
1319 files with open(), and sets the required mode explicitly. Thus, these
1320 files were ending up world-writeable. This was not a big issue, because,
1321 being within the spool directory, they were not world-accessible. I have
1322 created a function called modefopen, which takes an additional mode
1323 argument. It sets umask(777), creates the file, chmods it to the required
1324 mode, then resets the umask. All the relevant calls to fopen() in the
1325 content scanning code have been changed to use this function.
1327 PH/43 If retry_interval_max is set greater than 24 hours, it is quietly reset
1328 to 24 hours. This avoids potential overflow problems when processing G
1329 and H retry rules. I suspect nobody ever tinkers with this value.
1331 PH/44 Added STRIP_COMMAND=/usr/bin/strip to the FreeBSD Makefile.
1333 PH/45 When the plaintext authenticator is running as a client, the server's
1334 challenges are checked to ensure they are valid base64 strings. By

1440 PH/69 The HTML version of the specification is now built in a directory called

1444 PH/70 Catch two compiler warnings in sieve.c.
1446 PH/71 Fixed an obscure and subtle bug (thanks Alexander & Matthias). The
1447 function verify_get_ident() calls ip_connect() to connect a socket, but
1448 if the "connect()" function timed out, ip_connect() used to close the
1449 socket. However, verify_get_ident() also closes the socket later, and in
1450 between Exim writes to the log, which may get opened at this point. When
1451 the socket was closed in ip_connect(), the log could get the same file
1452 descriptor number as the socket. This naturally causes chaos. The fix is
1453 not to close the socket in ip_connect(); the socket should be closed by
1454 the function that creates it. There was only one place in the code where
1455 this was missing, in the iplookup router, which I don't think anybody now
1456 uses, but I've fixed it anyway.
1458 PH/72 Make dns_again_means_nonexist apply to lookups using gethostbyname() as
1459 well as to direct DNS lookups. Otherwise the handling of names in host
1460 lists is inconsistent and therefore confusing.
1466 PH/01 Two changes to the default runtime configuration:
1468 (1) Move the checks for relay_from_hosts and authenticated clients from
1469 after to before the (commented out) DNS black list checks.

1923 PH/06 There is a timeout for writing blocks of data, set by, e.g. data_timeout
1924 in the smtp transport. When a block could not be written in a single
1925 write() function, the timeout was being re-applied to each part-write.
1926 This seems wrong - if the receiver was accepting one byte at a time it
1927 would take for ever. The timeout is now adjusted when this happens. It
1928 doesn't have to be particularly precise.

2001 PH/16 Applied Matthew Newton's patch to exicyclog: "If log_file_path is set in
2002 the configuration file to be ":syslog", then the script "guesses" where
2003 the logs files are, rather than using the compiled in default. In our
2004 case the guess is not the same as the compiled default, so the script
2005 suddenly stopped working when I started to use syslog. The patch checks
2006 to see if log_file_path is "". If so, it attempts to read it from exim
2007 with no configuration file to get the compiled in version, before it
2008 falls back to the previous guessing code."
2010 TK/09 Added "prvs" and "prvscheck" expansion items. These help a lot with
2011 implementing BATV in an Exim configuration. See NewStuff for the gory
2014 PH/17 Applied Michael Haardt's patch for HP-UX, affecting only the os.h and
2015 Makefile that are specific to HP-UX.
2017 PH/18 If the "use_postmaster" option was set for a recipient callout together
2018 with the "random" option, the postmaster address was used as the MAIL
2019 FROM address for the random test, but not for the subsequent recipient
2020 test. It is now used for both.
2022 PH/19 Applied Michael Haardt's patch to update Sieve to RFC3028bis. "The
2023 patch removes a few documentation additions to RFC 3028, because the
2024 latest draft now contains them. It adds the new en;ascii-case comparator
2025 and a new error check for 8bit text in MIME parts. Comparator and
2026 require names are now matched exactly. I enabled the subaddress
2027 extension, but it is not well tested yet (read: it works for me)."

2071 PH/28 Changed -d+all to exclude +memory, because that information is very
2072 rarely of interest, but it makes the output a lot bigger. People tend to
2073 do -d+all out of habit.
2075 PH/29 Removed support for the Linux-libc5 build, as it is obsolete and the
2076 code in os-type was giving problems when libc.so lives in lib64, like on
2079 PH/30 Exim's DNS code uses the original T_xxx names for DNS record times. These
2080 aren't the modern standard, and it seems that some systems' include files
2081 don't always have them. Exim was already checking for some of the newer
2082 ones like T_AAAA, and defining it itself. I've added checks for all the

2085 PH/31 When using GnuTLS, if the parameters cache file did not exist, Exim was
2086 not automatically generating a new one, as it is supposed to. This
2087 prevented TLS from working. If the file did exist, but contained invalid
2088 data, a new version was generated, as expected. It was only the case of a
2089 non-existent file that was broken.
2091 TK/10 Domainkeys: Fix a bug in verification that caused a crash in conjunction
2092 with a change in libdomainkeys > 0.64.
2094 TK/11 Domainkeys: Change the logic how the "testing" policy flag is retrieved

2217 PH/18 Installed Lars Mainka's patch for the support of CRL collections in
2218 files or directories, for OpenSSL.
2220 PH/19 When an Exim process that is running as root has to create an Exim log
2221 file, it does so in a subprocess that runs as exim:exim so as to get the
2222 ownership right at creation (otherwise, other Exim processes might see
2223 the file with the wrong ownership). There was no test for failure of this
2224 fork() call, which would lead to the process getting stuck as it waited
2225 for a non-existent subprocess. Forks do occasionally fail when resources
2226 run out. I reviewed all the other calls to fork(); they all seem to check
2229 PH/20 When checking for unexpected SMTP input at connect time (before writing
2230 the banner), Exim was not dealing correctly with a non-positive return
2231 from the read() function. If the client had disconnected by this time,

2337 routing that produced that child. Some complicated redirection strategies
2338 went wrong when messages had multiple recipients, and made Exim's
2339 behaviour dependent on the order in which the addresses were given.
2341 I have moved the duplicate checking until after the routing is complete.
2342 Exim scans the addresses that are assigned to local and remote
2343 transports, and removes any duplicates. This means that more work will be
2344 done, as duplicates will always all be routed, but duplicates are

2360 PH/40 The value set for $authenticated_id in an authenticator may not contain
2361 binary zeroes or newlines because the value is written to log lines and
2362 to spool files. There was no check on this. Now the value is run through
2363 the string_printing() function so that such characters are converted to
2364 printable escape sequences.
2366 PH/41 $message_linecount is a new variable that contains the total number of
2367 lines in the message. Compare $body_linecount, which is the count for the
2370 PH/42 Exim no longer gives details of delivery errors for specific addresses in

2408 A note about Exim versions 4.44 and 4.50

2411 Exim 4.50 was meant to be the next release after 4.43. It contains a lot of
2412 changes of various kinds. As a consequence, a big documentation update was
2413 needed. This delayed the release for rather longer than seemed good, especially
2414 in the light of a couple of (minor) security issues. Therefore, the changes
2415 that fixed bugs were backported into 4.43, to create a 4.44 maintenance
2416 release. So 4.44 and 4.50 are in effect two different branches that both start
2419 I have left the 4.50 change log unchanged; it contains all the changes since
2420 4.43. The change log for 4.44 is below; many of its items are identical to
2421 those for 4.50. This seems to be the most sensible way to preserve the
2422 historical information.
2428 1. Minor wording change to the doc/README.SIEVE file.
2430 2. Change 4.43/35 introduced a bug: if quota_filecount was set, the
2431 computation of the current number of files was incorrect.
2433 3. Closing a stable door: arrange to panic-die if setitimer() ever fails. The
2434 bug fixed in 4.43/37 would have been diagnosed quickly if this had been in
2437 4. Give more explanation in the error message when the command for a transport
2438 filter fails to execute.
2440 5. There are several places where Exim runs a non-Exim command in a
2441 subprocess. The SIGUSR1 signal should be disabled for these processes. This

2456 "control" were broken. There should now be diagnostics for all cases when a
2457 control that does not make sense is encountered.

2525 29. In an address list, if the pattern was not a regular expression, an empty
2526 subject address (from a bounce message) matched only if the pattern was an
2527 empty string. Non-empty patterns were not even tested. This was the wrong
2528 because it is perfectly reasonable to use an empty address as part of a
2529 database query. An empty address is now tested by patterns that are
2530 lookups. However, all the other forms of pattern expect the subject to
2531 contain a local part and a domain, and therefore, for them, an empty
2532 address still always fails if the pattern is not itself empty.
2534 30. Exim went into a mad DNS loop when attempting to do a callout where the
2535 host was specified on an smtp transport, and looking it up yielded more
2536 than one IP address.
2538 31. Re-factored the code for checking spool and log partition space into a
2539 function that finds that data and another that does the check. The former
2540 is then used to implement four new variables: $spool_space, $log_space,
2541 $spool_inodes, and $log_inodes.
2543 32. The RFC2047 encoding function was originally intended for short strings
2544 such as real names; it was not keeping to the 75-character limit for
2545 encoded words that the RFC imposes. It now respects the limit, and
2546 generates multiple encoded words if necessary. To be on the safe side, I
2547 have increased the buffer size for the ${rfc2047: expansion operator from
2550 33. It is now permitted to omit both strings after an "if" condition; if the
2551 condition is true, the result is "true". As before, when the second string
2552 is omitted, a false condition yields an empty string. This makes it less

2556 there was an errors_to setting on the router. The errors_to setting is now
2559 35. If an IPv6 address is given for -bh or -bhc, it is now converted to the

2563 36. The table in the code that translates DNS record types into text (T_A to
2564 "A" for instance) was missing entries for NS and CNAME. It is just possible
2565 that this could have caused confusion if both these types were looked up
2566 for the same domain, because the text type is used as part of Exim's
2567 per-process caching. But the chance of anyone hitting this buglet seems
2570 37. The dnsdb lookup has been extended in a number of ways.
2572 (1) There is a new type, "zns", which walks up the domain tree until it

2578 (3) It is now possible to give a list of domains (or IP addresses) to be
2579 looked up. The behaviour when one of the lookups defers can be

2582 (4) It is now possible to specify the separator character for use when
2583 multiple records are returned.
2585 38. The dnslists ACL condition has been extended: it is now possible to supply
2586 a list of IP addresses and/or domains to be looked up in a particular DNS

2620 49. The SPA authentication driver was not abandoning authentication and moving
2621 on to the next authenticator when an expansion was forced to fail,
2622 contradicting the general specification for all authenticators. Instead it

2625 50. The default ordering of permitted cipher suites for GnuTLS was pessimal
2626 (the order specifies the preference for clients). The order is now AES256,

2629 51. Small patch to Sieve code - explicitly set From: when generating an
2632 52. Exim crashed if a remote delivery caused a very long error message to be

2661 keys for these records are domain names, not reversed IP addresses. The
2662 dnsdb PTR lookup now tests whether its key is an IP address. If not, it

2682 not checking this. This is a hostage to fortune. Exim now panics and dies
2683 if the condition is not met. A case was found where this could be provoked
2684 from a dnsdb PTR lookup with an IPv6 address that had more than 8
2685 components; fortuitously, this particular loophole had already been fixed
2686 by change 4.50/55 above.
2688 If there are any other similar loopholes, the new check in host_aton()
2689 itself should stop them being exploited. The report I received stated that
2690 data on the command line could provoke the exploit when Exim was running as
2691 exim, but did not say which command line option was involved. All I could
2692 find was the use of -be with a bad dnsdb PTR lookup, and in that case it is
2693 running as the user.
2696 61. There was a buffer overflow vulnerability in the SPA authentication code
2697 (which came originally from the Samba project). I have added a test to the
2698 spa_base64_to_bits() function which I hope fixes it.
2701 62. Configuration update for GNU/Hurd and variations. Updated Makefile-GNU and
2702 os.h-GNU, and added configuration files for GNUkFreeBSD and GNUkNetBSD.
2704 63. The daemon start-up calls getloadavg() while still root for those OS that
2705 need the first call to be done as root, but it missed one case: when
2706 deliver_queue_load_max is set with deliver_drop_privilege. This is
2707 necessary for the benefit of the queue runner, because there is no re-exec
2708 when deliver_drop_privilege is set.

2926 was generating a temporary error. It now behaves as specified.
2928 31. The default ordering of permitted cipher suites for GnuTLS was pessimal
2929 (the order specifies the preference for clients). The order is now AES256,
2930 AES128, 3DES, ARCFOUR128.
2932 31. Small patch to Sieve code - explicitly set From: when generating an
2935 32. Exim crashed if a remote delivery caused a very long error message to be
2936 recorded - for instance if somebody sent an entire SpamAssassin report back
2937 as a large number of 550 error lines. This bug was coincidentally fixed by
2938 increasing the size of one of Exim's internal buffers (big_buffer) that
2939 happened as part of the Exiscan merge. However, to be on the safe side, I
2940 have made the code more robust (and fixed the comments that describe what
2943 33. Some experimental protocols are using DNS PTR records for new purposes. The
2944 keys for these records are domain names, not reversed IP addresses. The
2945 dnsdb PTR lookup now tests whether its key is an IP address. If not, it
2946 leaves it alone. Component reversal etc. now happens only for IP addresses.
2949 34. The host_aton() function is supposed to be passed a string that is known
2950 to be a valid IP address. However, in the case of IPv6 addresses, it was
2951 not checking this. This is a hostage to fortune. Exim now panics and dies
2952 if the condition is not met. A case was found where this could be provoked
2953 from a dnsdb PTR lookup with an IPv6 address that had more than 8
2954 components; fortuitously, this particular loophole had already been fixed
2955 by change 4.50/55 or 4.44/33 above.
2957 If there are any other similar loopholes, the new check in host_aton()
2958 itself should stop them being exploited. The report I received stated that
2959 data on the command line could provoke the exploit when Exim was running as
2960 exim, but did not say which command line option was involved. All I could
2961 find was the use of -be with a bad dnsdb PTR lookup, and in that case it is
2962 running as the user.
2965 35. There was a buffer overflow vulnerability in the SPA authentication code
2966 (which came originally from the Samba project). I have added a test to the
2967 spa_base64_to_bits() function which I hope fixes it.
2970 36. The daemon start-up calls getloadavg() while still root for those OS that
2971 need the first call to be done as root, but it missed one case: when
2972 deliver_queue_load_max is set with deliver_drop_privilege. This is
2973 necessary for the benefit of the queue runner, because there is no re-exec
2974 when deliver_drop_privilege is set.
2976 37. Caching of lookup data for "hosts =" ACL conditions, when a named host list
2977 was in use, was not putting the data itself into the right store pool;
2978 consequently, it could be overwritten for a subsequent message in the same
2979 SMTP connection. (Fix 4.40/11 dealt with the non-cache case, but overlooked
2982 38. Sometimes the final signoff response after QUIT could fail to get
2983 transmitted in the non-TLS case. Testing !tls_active instead of tls_active
2984 < 0 before doing a fflush(). This bug looks as though it goes back to the
2985 introduction of TLS in release 3.20, but "sometimes" must have been rare
2986 because the tests only now provoked it.
2992 1. Fixed a longstanding but relatively impotent bug: a long time ago, before
2993 PIPELINING, the function smtp_write_command() used to return TRUE or FALSE.
2994 Now it returns an integer. A number of calls were still expecting a T/F
2995 return. Fortuitously, in all cases, the tests worked in OK situations,
2996 which is the norm. However, things would have gone wrong on any write
2997 failures on the smtp file descriptor. This function is used when sending
2998 messages over SMTP and also when doing verify callouts.
3000 2. When Exim is called to do synchronous delivery of a locally submitted
3001 message (the -odf or -odi options), it no longer closes stderr before doing
3004 3. Implemented the mua_wrapper option.
3006 4. Implemented mx_fail_domains and srv_fail_domains for the dnslookup router.
3008 5. Implemented the functions header_remove(), header_testname(),
3009 header_add_at_position(), and receive_remove_recipient(), and exported them
3012 6. If an ACL "warn" statement specified the addition of headers, Exim already
3013 inserted X-ACL-Warn: at the start if there was no header name. However, it
3014 was not making this test for the second and subsequent header lines if
3015 there were newlines in the string. This meant that an invalid header could

3038 same clock tick as a message's arrival, so that its received time was the
3039 same as the "first fail" time on the retry record, and that message
3040 remained on the queue past the ultimate address timeout, every queue runner
3041 would try a delivery (because it was past the ultimate address timeout) but
3042 after another failure, the ultimate address timeout, which should have then
3043 bounced the address, did not kick in. This was a "< instead of <=" error;
3044 in most cases the first failure would have been in the next clock tick
3045 after the received time, and all would be well.
3047 15. The special items beginning with @ in domain lists (e.g. @mx_any) were not
3048 being recognized when the domain list was tested by the match_domain
3049 condition in an expansion string.
3051 16. Added the ${str2b64: operator.
3053 17. Exim was always calling setrlimit() to set a large limit for the number of
3054 processes, without checking whether the existing limit was already
3055 adequate. (It did check for the limit on file descriptors.) Furthermore,
3056 errors from getrlimit() and setrlimit() were being ignored. Now they are
3057 logged to the main and panic logs, but Exim does carry on, to try to do its
3058 job under whatever limits there are.
3060 18. Imported PCRE 5.0.
3062 19. Trivial typo in log message " temporarily refused connection" (the leading
3065 20. If the log selector return_path_on_delivery was set and an address was
3066 redirected to /dev/null, the delivery process crashed because it assumed
3067 that a return path would always be set for a "successful" delivery. In this
3068 case, the whole delivery is bypassed as an optimization, and therefore no
3071 21. Internal re-arrangement: the function for sending a challenge and reading
3072 a response while authentication was assuming a zero-terminated challenge
3073 string. It's now changed to take a pointer and a length, to allow for
3074 binary data in such strings.

3087 26. If the domain in control=submission is set empty, Exim assumes that the

3091 27. Added "#define SOCKLEN_T int" to OS/os.h-SCO and OS/os.h-SCO_SV. Also added
3092 definitions to OS/Makefile-SCO and OS/Makefile-SCO_SV that put basename,
3093 chown and chgrp in /bin and hostname in /usr/bin.
3095 28. Exim was keeping the "process log" file open after each use, just as it
3096 does for the main log. This opens the possibility of it remaining open for
3097 long periods when the USR1 signal hits a daemon. Occasional processlog
3098 errors were reported, that could have been caused by this. Anyway, it seems
3099 much more sensible not to leave this file open at all, so that is what now
3102 29. The long-running daemon process does not normally write to the log once it
3103 has entered its main loop, and it closes the log before doing so. This is
3104 so that log files can straightforwardly be renamed and moved. However,
3105 there are a couple of unusual error situations where the daemon does write
3106 log entries, and I had neglected to close the log afterwards.
3108 30. The text of an SMTP error response that was received during a remote
3109 delivery was being truncated at 512 bytes. This is too short for some of
3110 the long messages that one sometimes sees. I've increased the limit to
3113 31. It is now possible to make retry rules that apply only when a message has a
3114 specific sender, in particular, an empty sender.
3116 32. Added "control = enforce_sync" and "control = no_enforce_sync". This makes
3117 it possible to be selective about when SMTP synchronization is enforced.
3119 33. Added "control = caseful_local_part" and "control = "caselower_local_part".
3121 32. Implemented hosts_connection_nolog.

3125 34. Setting "delay_warning=" to disable warnings was not working; it gave a

3132 37. There was a bug in the logic of the code that waits for the clock to tick
3133 in the case where the clock went backwards by a substantial amount such
3134 that the microsecond fraction of "now" was more than the microsecond
3135 fraction of "then" (but the whole seconds number was less).
3137 38. Added support for the libradius Radius client library this is found on
3138 FreeBSD (previously only the radiusclient library was supported).
3144 1. When certain lookups returned multiple values in the form name=value, the
3145 quoting of the values was not always being done properly. Specifically:
3146 (a) If the value started with a double quote, but contained no whitespace,
3148 (b) If the value contained whitespace other than a space character (i.e.
3149 tabs or newlines or carriage returns) it was not quoted.
3150 This fix has been applied to the mysql and pgsql lookups by writing a
3151 separate quoting function and calling it from the lookup code. The fix
3152 should probably also be applied to nisplus, ibase and oracle lookups, but
3153 since I cannot test any of those, I have not disturbed their existing code.
3155 2. A hit in the callout cache for a specific address caused a log line with no
3156 reason for rejecting RCPT. Now it says "Previous (cached) callout
3157 verification failure".
3159 3. There was an off-by-one bug in the queryprogram router. An over-long
3160 return line was truncated at 256 instead of 255 characters, thereby
3161 overflowing its buffer with the terminating zero. As well as fixing this, I
3162 have increased the buffer size to 1024 (and made a note to document this).
3164 4. If an interrupt, such as the USR1 signal that is send by exiwhat, arrives
3165 when Exim is waiting for an SMTP response from a remote server, Exim
3166 restarts its select() call on the socket, thereby resetting its timeout.
3167 This is not a problem when such interrupts are rare. Somebody set up a cron
3168 job to run exiwhat every 2 minutes, which is less than the normal select()
3169 timeout (5 or 10 minutes). This meant that the select() timeout never
3170 kicked in because it was always reset. I have fixed this by comparing the
3171 time when an interrupt arrives with the time at the start of the first call
3172 to select(). If more time than the timeout has elapsed, the interrupt is
3173 treated as a timeout.
3175 5. Some internal re-factoring in preparation for the addition of Sieve
3176 extensions (by MH). In particular, the "personal" test is moved to a
3177 separate function, and given an option for scanning Cc: and Bcc: (which is
3178 not set for Exim filters).
3180 6. When Exim created an email address using the login of the caller as the
3181 local part (e.g. when creating a From: or Sender: header line), it was not
3182 quoting the local part when it contained special characters such as @.
3184 7. Installed new OpenBSD configuration files.
3186 8. Reworded some messages for syntax errors in "and" and "or" conditions to
3187 try to make them clearer.
3189 9. Callout options, other than the timeout value, were being ignored when
3190 verifying sender addresses in header lines. For example, when using
3192 verify = header_sender/callout=no_cache
3194 the cache was (incorrectly) being used.
3196 10. Added a missing instance of ${EXE} to the exim_install script; this affects
3197 only the Cygwin environment.
3199 11. When return_path_on_delivery was set as a log selector, if different remote
3200 addresses in the same message used different return paths and parallel
3201 remote delivery occurred, the wrong values would sometimes be logged.
3202 (Whenever a remote delivery process finished, the return path value from
3203 the most recently started remote delivery process was logged.)
3205 12. RFC 3848 specifies standard names for the "with" phrase in Received: header
3206 lines when AUTH and/or TLS are in use. This is the "received protocol"
3207 field. Exim used to use "asmtp" for authenticated SMTP, without any
3208 indication (in the protocol name) for TLS use. Now it follows the RFC and
3209 uses "esmtpa" if the connection is authenticated, "esmtps" if it is
3210 encrypted, and "esmtpsa" if it is both encrypted and authenticated. These
3211 names appear in log lines as well as in Received: header lines.
3213 13. Installed MH's patches for Sieve to add the "copy" and "vacation"
3214 extensions, and comparison tests, and to fix some bugs.
3216 14. Changes to the "personal" filter test:
3218 (1) The test was buggy in that it was just doing the equivalent of
3219 "contains" tests on header lines. For example, if a user's address was
3220 anne@some.where, the "personal" test would incorrectly be true for
3222 To: susanne@some.where
3224 This test is now done by extracting each address from the header in turn,
3225 and checking the entire address. Other tests that are part of "personal"
3226 are now done using regular expressions (for example, to check local parts
3227 of addresses in From: header lines).
3229 (2) The list of non-personal local parts in From: addresses has been
3230 extended to include "listserv", "majordomo", "*-request", and "owner-*",
3231 taken from the Sieve specification recommendations.
3233 (3) If the message contains any header line starting with "List-" it is
3234 treated as non-personal.
3236 (4) The test for "circular" in the Subject: header line has been removed
3237 because it now seems ill-conceived.
3239 15. Minor typos in src/EDITME comments corrected.
3241 16. Installed latest exipick from John Jetmore.
3243 17. If headers_add on a router specified a text string that was too long for
3244 string_sprintf() - that is, longer than 8192 bytes - Exim panicked. The use
3245 of string_sprintf() is now avoided.
3247 18. $message_body_size was not set (it was always zero) when running the DATA
3248 ACL and the local_scan() function.
3250 19. For the "mail" command in an Exim filter, no default was being set for
3251 the once_repeat time, causing a random time value to be used if "once" was
3252 specified. (If the value happened to be <= 0, no repeat happened.) The
3253 default is now 0s, meaning "never repeat". The "vacation" command was OK
3254 (its default is 7d). It's somewhat surprising nobody ever noticed this bug
3255 (I found it when inspecting the code).
3257 20. There is now an overall timeout for performing a callout verification. It
3258 defaults to 4 times the callout timeout, which applies to individual SMTP
3259 commands during the callout. The overall timeout applies when there is more
3260 than one host that can be tried. The timeout is checked before trying the
3261 next host. This prevents very long delays if there are a large number of
3262 hosts and all are timing out (e.g. when the network connections are timing
3263 out). The value of the overall timeout can be changed by specifying an
3264 additional sub-option for "callout", called "maxwait". For example:
3266 verify = sender/callout=5s,maxwait=20s
3268 21. Add O_APPEND to the open() call for maildirsize files (Exim already seeks
3269 to the end before writing, but this should make it even safer).
3271 22. Exim was forgetting that it had advertised PIPELINING for the second and
3272 subsequent messages on an SMTP connection. It was also not resetting its
3273 memory on STARTTLS and an internal HELO.
3275 23. When Exim logs an SMTP synchronization error within a session, it now
3276 records whether PIPELINING has been advertised or not.
3278 24. Added 3 instances of "(long int)" casts to time_t variables that were being
3279 formatted using %ld, because on OpenBSD (and perhaps others), time_t is int
3280 rather than long int.
3282 25. Installed the latest Cygwin configuration files from the Cygwin maintainer.
3284 26. Added the never_mail option to autoreply.
3290 1. A reorganization of the code in order to implement 4.40/8 caused a daemon
3291 crash if the getsockname() call failed; this can happen if a connection is
3292 closed very soon after it is established. The problem was simply in the
3293 order in which certain operations were done, causing Exim to try to write
3294 to the SMTP stream before it had set up the file descriptor. The bug has
3295 been fixed by making things happen in the correct order.
3301 1. If "drop" was used in a DATA ACL, the SMTP output buffer was not flushed
3302 before the connection was closed, thus losing the rejection response.
3304 2. Commented out the definition of SOCKLEN_T in os.h-SunOS5. It is needed for
3305 some early Solaris releases, but causes trouble in current releases where
3306 socklen_t is defined.
3308 3. When std{in,out,err} are closed, re-open them to /dev/null so that they
3311 4. Minor refactoring of os.c-Linux to avoid compiler warning when IPv6 is not
3314 5. Refactoring in expand.c to improve memory usage. Pre-allocate a block so
3315 that releasing the top of it at the end releases what was used for sub-
3316 expansions (unless the block got too big). However, discard this block if
3317 the first thing is a variable or header, so that we can use its block when
3318 it is dynamic (useful for very large $message_headers, for example).
3320 6. Lookups now cache *every* query, not just the most recent. A new, separate
3321 store pool is used for this. It can be recovered when all lookup caches are
3322 flushed. Lookups now release memory at the end of their result strings.
3323 This has involved some general refactoring of the lookup sources.
3325 7. Some code has been added to the store_xxx() functions to reduce the amount
3326 of flapping under certain conditions.
3328 8. log_incoming_interface used to affect only the <= reception log lines. Now
3329 it causes the local interface and port to be added to several more SMTP log
3330 lines, for example "SMTP connection from", and rejection lines.
3332 9. The Sieve author supplied some patches for the doc/README.SIEVE file.
3334 10. Added a conditional definition of _BSD_SOCKLEN_T to os.h-Darwin.
3336 11. If $host_data was set by virtue of a hosts lookup in an ACL, its value
3337 could be overwritten at the end of the current message (or the start of a
3338 new message if it was set in a HELO ACL). The value is now preserved for
3339 the duration of the SMTP connection.
3341 12. If a transport had a headers_rewrite setting, and a matching header line
3342 contained an unqualified address, that address was qualified, even if it
3343 did not match any rewriting rules. The underlying bug was that the values
3344 of the flags that permit the existence of unqualified sender and recipient
3345 addresses in header lines (set by {sender,recipient}_unqualified_hosts for
3346 non-local messages, and by -bnq for local messages) were not being
3347 preserved with the message after it was received.
3349 13. When Exim was logging an SMTP synchronization error, it could sometimes log
3350 "next input=" as part of the text comprising the host identity instead of
3351 the correct text. The code was using the same buffer for two different
3352 strings. However, depending on which order the printing function evaluated
3353 its arguments, the bug did not always show up. Under Linux, for example, my
3354 test suite worked just fine.
3356 14. Exigrep contained a use of Perl's "our" scoping after change 4.31/70. This
3357 doesn't work with some older versions of Perl. It has been changed to "my",
3358 which in any case is probably the better facility to use.
3360 15. A really picky compiler found some instances of statements for creating
3361 error messages that either had too many or two few arguments for the format
3364 16. The size of the buffer for calls to the DNS resolver has been increased
3365 from 1024 to 2048. A larger buffer is needed when performing PTR lookups
3366 for addresses that have a lot of PTR records. This alleviates a problem; it
3367 does not fully solve it.
3369 17. A dnsdb lookup for PTR records that receives more data than will fit in the
3370 buffer now truncates the list and logs the incident, which is the same
3371 action as happens when Exim is looking up a host name and its aliases.
3372 Previously in this situation something unpredictable would happen;
3373 sometimes it was "internal error: store_reset failed".
3375 18. If a server dropped the connection unexpectedly when an Exim client was
3376 using GnuTLS and trying to read a response, the client delivery process
3377 crashed while trying to generate an error log message.
3379 19. If a "warn" verb in an ACL added multiple headers to a message in a single
3380 string, for example:
3382 warn message = H1: something\nH2: something
3384 the text was added as a single header line from Exim's point of view
3385 though it ended up OK in the delivered message. However, searching for the
3386 second and subsequent header lines using $h_h2: did not work. This has been
3387 fixed. Similarly, if a system filter added multiple headers in this way,
3388 the routers could not see them.
3390 20. Expanded the error message when iplsearch is called with an invalid key to
3391 suggest using net-iplsearch in a host list.
3393 21. When running tests using -bh, any delays imposed by "delay" modifiers in
3394 ACLs are no longer actually imposed (and a message to that effect is
3397 22. If a "gecos" field in a passwd entry contained escaped characters, in
3398 particular, if it contained a \" sequence, Exim got it wrong when building
3399 a From: or a Sender: header from that name. A second bug also caused
3400 incorrect handling when an unquoted " was present following a character
3401 that needed quoting.
3403 23. "{crypt}" as a password encryption mechanism for a "crypteq" expansion item
3404 was not being matched caselessly.
3406 24. Arranged for all hyphens in the exim.8 source to be escaped with
3409 25. Change 16 of 4.32, which reversed 71 or 4.31 didn't quite do the job
3410 properly. Recipient callout cache records were still being keyed to include
3411 the sender, even when use_sender was set false. This led to far more
3412 callouts that were necessary. The sender is no longer included in the key

3415 26. Added "control = submission" modifier to ACLs.

3440 36. Code for decoding IPv6 addresses in host lists is now included, even if
3441 IPv6 support is not being compiled. This fixes a bug in which an IPv6
3442 address was recognized as an IP address, but was then not correctly decoded
3443 into binary, causing unexpected and incorrect effects when compared with
3450 1. Very minor rewording of debugging text in manualroute to say "list of
3451 hosts" instead of "hostlist".
3453 2. If verify=header_syntax was set, and a header line with an unqualified
3454 address (no domain) and a large number of spaces between the end of the
3455 name and the colon was received, the reception process suffered a buffer
3456 overflow, and (when I tested it) crashed. This was caused by some obsolete
3457 code that should have been removed. The fix is to remove it!
3459 3. When running in the test harness, delay a bit after writing a bounce
3460 message to get a bit more predictability in the log output.
3462 4. Added a call to search_tidyup() just before forking a reception process. In
3463 theory, someone could use a lookup in the expansion of smtp_accept_max_
3464 per_host which, without the tidyup, could leave open a database connection.
3466 5. Added the variables $recipient_data and $sender_data which get set from a
3467 lookup success in an ACL "recipients" or "senders" condition, or a router
3468 "senders" option, similar to $domain_data and $local_part_data.
3470 6. Moved the writing of debug_print from before to after the "senders" test
3473 7. Change 4.31/66 (moving the time when the Received: is generated) caused
3474 problems for message scanning, either using a data ACL, or using
3475 local_scan() because the Received: header was not generated till after they
3476 were called (in order to set the time as the time of reception completion).
3477 I have revised the way this works. The header is now generated after the
3478 body is received, but before the ACL or local_scan() are called. After they
3479 are run, the timestamp in the header is updated.
3485 1. Change 4.24/6 introduced a bug because the SIGALRM handler was disabled
3486 before starting a queue runner without re-exec. This happened only when
3487 deliver_drop_privilege was set or when the Exim user was set to root. The
3488 effect of the bug was that timeouts during subsequent deliveries caused
3489 crashes instead of being properly handled. The handler is now left at its
3490 default (and expected) setting.
3492 2. The other case in which a daemon avoids a re-exec is to deliver an incoming
3493 message, again when deliver_drop_privilege is set or Exim is run as root.
3494 The bug described in (1) was not present in this case, but the tidying up
3495 of the other signals was missing. I have made the two cases consistent.
3497 3. The ignore_target_hosts setting on a manualroute router was being ignored
3498 for hosts that were looked up using the /MX notation.
3500 4. Added /ignore=<ip list> feature to @mx_any, @mx_primary, and @mx_secondary
3503 5. Change 4.31/55 was buggy, and broke when there was a rewriting rule that
3504 operated on the sender address. After changing the $sender_address to <>
3505 for the sender address verify, Exim was re-instated it as the original
3506 (before rewriting) address, but remembering that it had rewritten it, so it
3507 wasn't rewriting it again. This bug also had the effect of breaking the
3508 sender address verification caching when the sender address was rewritten.
3510 6. The ignore_target_hosts option was being ignored by the ipliteral router.
3511 This has been changed so that if the ip literal address matches
3512 ignore_target_hosts, the router declines.
3514 7. Added expansion conditions match_domain, match_address, and match_local_
3515 part (NOT match_host).
3517 8. The placeholder for the Received: header didn't have a length field set.
3519 9. Added code to Exim itself and to exim_lock to test for a specific race
3520 condition that could lead to file corruption when using MBX delivery. The
3521 issue is with the lockfile that is created in /tmp. If this file is removed
3522 after a process has opened it but before that process has acquired a lock,
3523 there is the potential for a second process to recreate the file and also
3524 acquire a lock. This could lead to two Exim processes writing to the file
3525 at the same time. The added code performs the same test as UW imapd; it
3526 checks after acquiring the lock that its file descriptor still refers to
3527 the same named file.
3529 10. The buffer for building added header lines was of fixed size, 8192 bytes.
3530 It is now parameterized by HEADER_ADD_BUFFER_SIZE and this can be adjusted
3533 11. Added the smtp_active_hostname option. If used, this will typically be made
3534 to depend on the incoming interface address. Because $interface_address is
3535 not set up until the daemon has forked a reception process, error responses
3536 that can happen earlier (such as "too many connections") no longer contain
3539 12. If an expansion in a condition on a "warn" statement fails because a lookup
3540 defers, the "warn" statement is abandoned, and the next ACL statement is
3541 processed. Previously this caused the whole ACL to be aborted.
3543 13. Added the iplsearch lookup type.

3558 19. If the log selector return_path_on_delivery was set, Exim crashed when

3561 20. If two routers both had headers_remove settings, and the first one included

3564 colon in the middle).
3570 1. Added -C and -D options to the exinext utility, mainly to make it easier
3571 to include in the automated testing, but these could be helpful when
3572 multiple configurations are in use.
3574 2. The exinext utility was not formatting the output nicely when there was
3575 an alternate port involved in the retry record key, nor when there was a
3576 message id as well (for retries that were specific to a specific message
3577 and a specific host). It was also confused by IPv6 addresses, because of
3578 the additional colons they contain. I have fixed the IPv4 problem, and
3579 patched it up to do a reasonable job for IPv6.
3581 3. When there is an error after a MAIL, RCPT, or DATA SMTP command during
3582 delivery, the log line now contains "pipelined" if PIPELINING was used.
3584 4. An SMTP transport process used to panic and die if the bind() call to set
3585 an explicit outgoing interface failed. This has been changed; it is now
3586 treated in the same way as a connect() failure.
3588 5. A reference to $sender_host_name in the part of a conditional expansion
3589 that was being skipped was still causing a DNS lookup. This no longer
3592 6. The def: expansion condition was not recognizing references to header lines
3593 that used bh_ and bheader_.
3595 7. Added the _cache feature to named lists.
3597 8. The code for checking quota_filecount in the appendfile transport was
3598 allowing one more file than it should have been.
3600 9. For compatibility with Sendmail, the command line option
3608 and sets the incoming protocol and host name (for trusted callers). The
3609 host name and its colon can be omitted when only the protocol is to be set.
3610 Note the Exim already has two private options, -pd and -ps, that refer to
3611 embedded Perl. It is therefore impossible to set a protocol value of "d" or
3612 "s", but I don't think that's a major issue.
3614 10. A number of refactoring changes to the code, none of which should affect
3617 (a) The number of logging options was getting close to filling up the
3618 32-bit word that was used as a bit map. I have split them into two classes:
3619 those that are passed in the argument to log_write(), and those that are
3620 only ever tested independently outside of that function. These are now in
3621 separate 32-bit words, so there is plenty of room for expansion again.
3622 There is no change in the user interface or the logging behaviour.
3624 (b) When building, for example, log lines, the code previously used a
3625 macro that called string_cat() twice, in order to add two strings. This is
3626 not really sufficiently general. Furthermore, there was one instance where
3627 it was actually wrong because one of the argument was used twice, and in
3628 one call a function was used. (As it happened, calling the function twice
3629 did not affect the overall behaviour.) The macro has been replaced by a
3630 function that can join an arbitrary number of extra strings onto a growing
3633 (c) The code for expansion conditions now uses a table and a binary chop
3634 instead of a serial search (which was left over from when there were very
3635 few conditions). Also, it now recognizes conditions like "pam" even when
3636 the relevant support is not compiled in: a suitably worded error message is
3637 given if an attempt is made to use such a condition.
3639 11. Added ${time_interval:xxxxx}.
3641 12. A bug was causing one of the ddress fields not to be passed back correctly
3642 from remote delivery subprocesses. The field in question was not being
3643 subsequently used, so this caused to problems in practice.
3645 13. Added new log selectors queue_time and deliver_time.
3647 14. Might have fixed a bug in maildirsizefile handling that threw up
3648 "unexpected character" debug warnings, and recalculated the data
3649 unnecessarily. In any case, I expanded the warning message to give more
3652 15. Added the message "Restricted characters in address" to the statements in
3653 the default ACL that block characters like @ and % in local parts.
3655 16. Change 71 for release 4.31 proved to be much less benign that I imagined.
3656 Three changes have been made:
3658 (a) There was a serious bug; a negative response to MAIL caused the whole
3659 recipient domain to be cached as invalid, thereby blocking all messages
3660 to all local parts at the same domain, from all senders. This bug has
3661 been fixed. The domain is no longer cached after a negative response to
3662 MAIL if the sender used is not empty.
3664 (b) The default behaviour of using MAIL FROM:<> for recipient callouts has
3667 (c) A new callout option, "use_sender" has been added for people who want
3668 the modified behaviour.
3674 1. Removed "EXTRALIBS=-lwrap" from OS/Makefile-Unixware7 on the advice of
3677 2. Removed "LIBS = -lresolv" from OS/Makefile-Darwin as it is not needed, and
3678 indeed breaks things for older releases.
3680 3. Added additional logging to the case where there is a problem reading data
3681 from a filter that is running in a subprocess using a pipe, in order to
3682 try to track down a specific problem.
3684 4. Testing facility fudge: when running in the test harness and attempting
3685 to connect to 10.x.x.x (expecting a connection timeout) I'm now sometimes
3686 getting "No route to host". Convert this to a timeout.
3688 5. Define ICONV_ARG2_TYPE as "char **" for Unixware7 to avoid compiler
3691 6. Some OS don't have socklen_t but use size_t instead. This affects the
3692 fifth argument of getsockopt() amongst other things. This is now
3693 configurable by a macro called SOCKLEN_T which defaults to socklen_t, but
3694 can be set for individual OS. I have set it for SunOS5, OSF1, and
3695 Unixware7. Current versions of SunOS5 (aka Solaris) do have socklen_t, but
3696 some earlier ones do not.
3698 7. Change 4.30/15 was not doing the test caselessly.
3700 8. The standard form for an IPv6 address literal was being rejected by address
3701 parsing in, for example, MAIL and RCPT commands. An example of this kind of
3702 address is [IPv6:2002:c1ed:8229:10:202:2dff:fe07:a42a]. Exim now accepts
3703 this, as well as the form without the "IPv6" on the front (but only when
3704 address literals are enabled, of course).
3706 9. Added some casts to avoid compiler warnings in OS/os.c-Linux.
3708 10. Exim crashed if a message with an empty sender address specified by -f
3709 encountered a router with an errors_to setting. This could be provoked only
3710 by a command such as
3714 where an empty string was supplied; "<>" did not hit this bug.
3716 11. Installed PCRE release 4.5.
3718 12. If EHLO/HELO was rejected by an ACL, the value of $sender_helo_name
3719 remained set. It is now erased.
3721 13. exiqgrep wasn't working on MacOS X because it didn't correctly compute
3722 times from message ids (which are base 36 rather than the normal 62).
3724 14. "Expected" SMTP protocol errors that can arise when PIPELINING is in use
3725 were being counted as actual protocol errors, and logged if the log
3726 selector +smtp_protocol_error was set. One cannot be perfect in this test,
3727 but now, if PIPELINING has been advertised, RCPT following a rejected MAIL,
3728 and DATA following a set of rejected RCPTs do not count as protocol errors.
3729 In other words, Exim assumes they were pipelined, though this may not
3730 actually be the case. Of course, in all cases the client gets an
3731 appropriate error code.
3733 15. If a lookup fails in an ACL condition, a message about the failure may
3734 be available; it is used if testing the ACL cannot continue, because most
3735 such messages specify what the cause of the deferral is. However, some
3736 messages (e.g. "MYSQL: no data found") do not cause a defer. There was bug
3737 that caused an old message to be retained and used if a later statement
3738 caused a defer, replacing the real cause of the deferral.
3740 16. If an IP address had so many PTR records that the DNS lookup buffer
3741 was not large enough to hold them, Exim could crash while trying to process
3742 the truncated data. It now detects and logs this case.
3744 17. Further to 4.21/58, another change has been made: if (and only if) the
3745 first line of a message (the first header line) ends with CRLF, a bare LF
3746 in a subsequent header line has a space inserted after it, so as not to
3747 terminate the header.
3749 18. Refactoring: tidied an ugly bit of code in appendfile that copied data
3750 unnecessarily, used atoi() instead of strtol(), and didn't check the
3751 termination when getting file sizes from file names by regex.
3753 19. Completely re-implemented the support for maildirsize files, in the light
3754 of a number of problems with the previous contributed implementation
3755 (4.30/29). In particular:
3757 . If the quota is zero, the maildirsize file is maintained, but no quota is
3760 . If the maildir directory does not exist, it is created before any attempt
3761 to write a maildirsize file.
3763 . The quota value in the file is just a cache; if the quota is changed in
3764 the transport, the new value overrides.
3766 . A regular expression is available for excluding directories from the
3769 20. The autoreply transport checks the characters in options that define the
3770 message's headers; it allows continued headers, but it was checking with
3771 isspace() after an embedded newline instead of explicitly looking for a
3774 21. If all the "regular" hosts to which an address was routed had passed their
3775 expiry times, and had not reached their retry times, the address was
3776 bounced, even if fallback hosts were defined. Now Exim should go on to try
3779 22. Increased buffer sizes in the callout code from 1024 to 4096 to match the
3780 equivalent code in the SMTP transport. Some hosts send humungous responses
3781 to HELO/EHLO, more than 1024 it seems.
3783 23. Refactoring: code in filter.c used (void *) for "any old type" but this
3784 gives compiler warnings in some environments. I've now done it "properly",
3787 24. The replacement for inet_ntoa() that is used with gcc on IRIX systems
3788 (because of problems with the built-in one) was declared to return uschar *
3789 instead of char *, causing compiler failure.
3791 25. Fixed a file descriptor leak when processing alias/forward files.
3793 26. Fixed a minor format string issue in dbfn.c.
3795 27. Typo in exim.c: ("dmbnz" for "dbmnz").
3797 28. If a filter file refered to $h_xxx or $message_headers, and the headers
3798 contained RFC 2047 "words", Exim's memory could, under certain conditions,
3801 29. When a sender address is verified, it is cached, to save repeating the test
3802 when there is more than one recipient in a message. However, when the
3803 verification involves a callout, it is possible for different callout
3804 options to be set for different recipients. It is too complicated to keep
3805 track of this in the cache, so now Exim always runs a verification when a
3806 callout is required, relying on the callout cache for the optimization.
3807 The overhead is duplication of the address routing, but this should not be
3810 30. Fixed a bug in callout caching. If a RCPT command caused the sender address
3811 to be verified with callout=postmaster, and the main callout worked but the
3812 postmaster check failed, the verification correctly failed. However, if a
3813 subsequent RCPT command asked for sender verification *without* the
3814 postmaster check, incorrect caching caused this verification also to fail,
3817 31. Exim caches DNS lookup failures so as to avoid multiple timeouts; however,
3818 it was not caching the DNS options (qualify_single, search_parents) that
3819 were used when the lookup failed. A subsequent lookup with different
3820 options therefore always gave the same answer, though there were cases
3821 where it should not have. (Example: a "domains = !$mx_any" option on a
3822 dnslookup router: the "domains" option is always processed without any
3823 widening, but the router might have qualify_single set.) Now Exim uses the
3824 cached value only when the same options are set.
3826 32. Added John Jetmore's "exipick" utility to the distribution.
3828 33. GnuTLS: When an attempt to start a TLS session fails for any reason other
3829 than a timeout (e.g. a certificate is required, and is not provided), an
3830 Exim server now closes the connection immediately. Previously it waited for
3831 the client to close - but if the client is SSL, it seems that they each
3832 wait for each other, leading to a delay before one of them times out.
3834 34: GnuTLS: Updated the code to use the new GnuTLS 1.0.0 API. I have not
3835 maintained 0.8.x compatibility because I don't think many are using it, and
3836 it is clearly obsolete.
3838 35. Added TLS support for CRLs: a tls_crl global option and one for the smtp
3841 36. OpenSSL: $tls_certificate_verified was being set to 1 even if the
3842 client certificate was expired. A simple patch fixes this, though I don't
3843 understand the full logic of why the verify callback is called multiple
3846 37. OpenSSL: a patch from Robert Roselius: "Enable client-bug workaround.
3847 Versions of OpenSSL as of 0.9.6d include a 'CBC countermeasure' feature,
3848 which causes problems with some clients (such as the Certicom SSL Plus
3849 library used by Eudora). This option, SSL_OP_DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS,
3850 disables the coutermeasure allowing Eudora to connect."
3852 38. Exim was not checking that a write() to a log file succeeded. This could
3853 lead to Bad Things if a log got too big, in particular if it hit a file
3854 size limit. Exim now panics and dies if it cannot write to a log file, just
3855 as it does if it cannot open a log file.
3857 39. Modified OS/Makefile-Linux so that it now contains
3859 CFLAGS=-O -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE
3861 The two -D definitions ensure that Exim is compiled with large file
3862 support, which makes it possible to handle log files that are bigger than
3865 40. Fixed a subtle caching bug: if (in an ACL or a set of routers, for
3866 instance) a domain was checked against a named list that involved a lookup,
3867 causing $domain_data to be set, then another domain was checked against the
3868 same list, then the first domain was re-checked, the value of $domain_data
3869 after the final check could be wrong. In particular, if the second check
3870 failed, it could be set empty. This bug probably also applied to
3873 41. The strip_trailing_dot option was not being applied to the address given
3874 with the -f command-line option.
3876 42. The code for reading a message's header from the spool was incrementing
3877 $received_count, but never initializing it. This meant that the value was
3878 incorrect (doubled) while delivering a message in the same process in which
3879 it was received. In the most common configuration of Exim, this never
3880 happens - a fresh exec is done - but it can happen when
3881 deliver_drop_privilege is set.
3883 43. When Exim logs an SMTP synchronization error - client data sent too soon -
3884 it now includes up to 150 characters of the unexpected data in the log
3887 44. The exim_dbmbuild utility uses fixed size buffers for reading input lines
3888 and building data strings. The size of both of these buffers was 10 000
3889 bytes - far larger than anybody would *ever* want, thought I. Needless to
3890 say, somebody hit the limit. I have increased the maximum line length to
3891 20 000 and the maximum data length of concatenated lines to 100 000. I have
3892 also fixed two bugs, because there was no checking on these buffers. Tsk,
3893 tsk. Now exim_dbmbuild gives a message and exits with an error code if a
3894 buffer is too small.
3896 45. The exim_dbmbuild utility did not support quoted keys, as Exim does in
3897 lsearch lookups. Now it does.
3899 46. When parsing a route_list item in a manualroute router, a fixed-length
3900 buffer was used for the list of hosts. I made this 1024 bytes long,
3901 thinking that nobody would ever have a list of hosts that long. Wrong.
3902 Somebody had a whole pile of complicated expansion conditions, and the
3903 string was silently truncated, leading to an expansion error. It turns out
3904 that it is easier to change to an unlimited length (owing to other changes
3905 that have happened since this code was originally written) than to build
3906 structure for giving a limitation error. The length of the item that
3907 expands into the list of hosts is now unlimited.
3909 47. The lsearch lookup could not handle data where the length of text line was
3910 more than 4095 characters. Such lines were truncated, leading to shortened
3911 data being returned. It should now handle lines of any length.
3913 48. Minor wording revision: "cannot test xxx in yyy ACL" becomes "cannot test
3914 xxx condition in yyy ACL" (e.g. "cannot test domains condition in DATA
3917 49. Cosmetic tidy to scripts like exicyclog that are generated by globally
3918 replacing strings such as BIN_DIRECTORY in a source file: the replacement
3919 no longer happens in comment lines. A list of replacements is now placed
3920 at the head of all of the source files, except those whose only change is
3921 to replace PERL_COMMAND in the very first #! line.
3923 50. Replaced the slow insertion sort in queue.c, for sorting the list of
3924 messages on the queue, with a bottom-up merge sort, using code contributed
3925 by Michael Haardt. This should make operations like -bp somewhat faster on
3926 large queues. It won't affect queue runners, except when queue_run_in_order
3929 51. Installed eximstats 1.31 in the distribution.
3931 52. Added support for SRV lookups to the dnslookup router.
3933 53. If an ACL referred to $message_body or $message_body_end, the value was not
3934 reset for any messages that followed in the same SMTP session.
3936 54. The store-handling optimization for building very long strings was not
3937 differentiating between the different store pools. I don't think this
3938 actually made any difference in practice, but I've tidied it.
3940 55. While running the routers to verify a sender address, $sender_address
3941 was still set to the sender address. This is wrong, because when routing to
3942 send a bounce to the sender, it would be empty. Therefore, I have changed
3943 it so that, while verifying a sender address, $sender_address is set to <>.
3944 (There is no change to what happens when verifying a recipient address.)
3946 56. After finding MX (or SRV) records, Exim was doing a DNS lookup for the
3947 target A or AAAA records (if not already returned) without resetting the
3948 qualify_single or search_parents options of the DNS resolver. These are
3949 inappropriate in this case because the targets of MX and SRV records must
3950 be FQDNs. A broken DNS record could cause trouble if it happened to have a
3951 target that, when qualified, matched something in the local domain. These
3952 two options are now turned off when doing these lookups.
3954 57. It seems that at least some releases of Reiserfs (which does not have the
3955 concept of a fixed number of inodes) returns zero and not -1 for the
3956 number of available inodes. This interacted badly with check_spool_inodes,
3957 which assumed that -1 was the "no such thing" setting. What I have done is
3958 to check that the total number of inodes is greater than zero before doing
3959 the test of how many are available.
3961 58. When a "warn" ACL statement has a log_message modifier, the message is
3962 remembered, and not repeated. This is to avoid a lot of repetition when a
3963 message has many recipients that cause the same warning to be written.
3964 Howewer, Exim was preserving the list of already written lines for an
3965 entire SMTP session, which doesn't seem right. The memory is now reset if a
3966 new message is started.
3968 59. The "rewrite" debugging flag was not showing the result of rewriting in the
3969 debugging output unless log_rewrite was also set.
3971 60. Avoid a compiler warning on 64-bit systems in dsearch.c by avoiding the use
3972 of (int)(handle) when we know that handle contains (void *)(-1).
3974 61. The Exim daemon panic-logs an error return when it closes the incoming
3975 connection. However "connection reset by peer" seems to be common, and
3976 isn't really an error worthy of noting specially, so that particular error
3979 62. When Exim is trying to find all the local interfaces, it used to panic and
3980 die if the ioctl to get the interface flags failed. However, it seems that
3981 on at least one OS (Solaris 9) it is possible to have an interface that is
3982 included in the list of interfaces, but for which you get a failure error
3983 for this call. This happens when the interface is not "plumbed" into a
3984 protocol (i.e. neither IPv4 nor IPv6). I've changed the code so that a
3985 failure of the "get flags" call assumes that the interface is down.
3987 63. Added a ${eval10: operator, which assumes all numbers are decimal. This
3988 makes life easier for people who are doing arithmetic on fields extracted
3989 from dates, where you often get leading zeros that should not be
3990 interpreted as octal.
3992 64. Added qualify_domain to the redirect router, to override the global
3995 65. If a pathologically long header line contained very many addresses (the
3996 report of this problem mentioned 10 000) and each of them was rewritten,
3997 Exim could use up a very large amount of memory. (It kept on making new
3998 copies of the header line as it rewrote, and never released the old ones.)
3999 At the expense of a bit more processing, the header rewriting function has
4000 been changed so that it no longer eats memory in this way.
4002 66. The generation of the Received: header has been moved from the time that a
4003 message starts to be received, to the time that it finishes. The timestamp
4004 in the Received: header should now be very close to that of the <= log
4005 line. There are two side-effects of this change:
4007 (a) If a message is rejected by a DATA or non-SMTP ACL or local_scan(), the
4008 logged header lines no longer include the local Received: line, because
4009 it has not yet been created. The same applies to a copy of the message
4010 that is returned to a non-SMTP sender when a message is rejected.
4012 (b) When a filter file is tested using -bf, no additional Received: header
4013 is added to the test message. After some thought, I decided that this
4016 This change does not affect the value of $received_for. It is still set
4017 after address rewriting, but before local_scan() is called.
4019 67. Installed the latest Cygwin-specific files from the Cygwin maintainer.
4021 68. GnuTLS: If an empty file is specified for tls_verify_certificates, GnuTLS
4022 gave an unhelpful panic error message, and a defer error. I have managed to
4023 change this behaviour so that it now rejects any supplied certificate,
4024 which seems right, as the list of acceptable certificates is empty.
4026 69. OpenSSL: If an empty file is specified for tls_verify_certificates, OpenSSL
4027 gave an unhelpful defer error. I have not managed to make this reject any
4028 supplied certificates, but the error message it gives is "no certificate
4029 supplied", which is not helpful.
4031 70. exigrep's output now also includes lines that are not associated with any
4032 message, but which match the given pattern. Implemented by a patch from
4033 Martin Sluka, which also tidied up the Perl a bit.
4035 71. Recipient callout verification, like sender verification, was using <> in
4036 the MAIL FROM command. This isn't really the right thing, since the actual
4037 sender may affect whether the remote host accepts the recipient or not. I
4038 have changed it to use the actual sender in the callout; this means that
4039 the cache record is now keyed on a recipient/sender pair, not just the
4040 recipient address. There doesn't seem to be a real danger of callout loops,
4041 since a callout by the remote host to check the sender would use <>.
4042 [SEE ABOVE: changed after hitting problems.]
4044 72. Exim treats illegal SMTP error codes that do not begin with 4 or 5 as
4045 temporary errors. However, in the case of such a code being given after
4046 the end of a data transmission (i.e. after ".") Exim was failing to write
4047 a retry record for the message. (Yes, there was some broken host that was
4048 actually sending 8xx at this point.)
4050 73. An unknown lookup type in a host list could cause Exim to panic-die when
4051 the list was checked. (An example that provoked this was putting <; in the
4052 middle of a list instead of at the start.) If this happened during a DATA
4053 ACL check, a -D file could be left lying around. This kind of configuration
4054 error no longer causes Exim to die; instead it causes a defer errror. The
4055 incident is still logged to the main and panic logs.
4057 74. Buglet left over from Exim 3 conversion. The message "too many messages
4058 in one connection" was written to the rejectlog but not the mainlog, except
4059 when address rewriting (yes!) was being logged.
4061 75. Added write_rejectlog option.
4063 76. When a system filter was run not as root (that is, when system_filter_user
4064 was set), the values of the $n variables were not being returned to the
4065 main process; thus, they were not subsequently available in the $sn
4068 77. Added +return_path_on_delivery log selector.
4070 78. A connection timeout was being treated differently from recipients deferred
4071 when testing hosts_max_try with a message that was older than the host's
4072 retry timeout. (The host should not be counted, thus allowing all hosts to
4073 be tried at least once before bouncing.) This may have been the cause of an
4074 occasionally reported bug whereby a message would remain on the queue
4075 longer than the retry timeout, but would be bounced if a delivery was
4076 forced. I say "may" because I never totally pinned down the problem;
4077 setting up timeout/retry tests is difficult. See also the next item.
4079 79. The ultimate address timeout was not being applied to errors that involved
4080 a combination of host plus message (for example, a timeout on a MAIL
4081 command). When an address resolved to a number of possible hosts, and they
4082 were not all tried for each delivery (e.g. because of hosts_max_try), a
4083 message could remain on the queue longer than the retry timeout.
4085 80. Sieve bug: "stop" inside "elsif" was broken. Applied a patch from Michael
4088 81. Fixed an obscure SMTP outgoing bug which required at least the following
4089 conditions: (a) there was another message waiting for the same server;
4090 (b) the server returned 5xx to all RCPT commands in the first message so
4091 that the message was not completed; (c) the server dropped the connection
4092 or gave a negative response to the RSET that Exim sends to abort the
4093 transaction. The observed case was a dropped connection after DATA that had
4094 been sent in pipelining mode. That is, the server had advertised PIPELINING
4095 but was not implementing it correctly. The effect of the bug was incorrect
4096 behaviour, such as trying another host, and this could lead to a crash.
4102 1. The 3rd arguments to getsockname(), getpeername(), and accept() in exim.c
4103 and daemon.c were passed as pointers to ints; they should have been
4104 pointers to socklen_t variables (which are typically unsigned ints).
4106 2. Some signed/unsigned type warnings in the os.c file for Linux have been
4109 3. Fixed a really odd bug that affected only the testing scheme; patching a
4110 certain fixed string in the binary changed the value of another string that
4111 happened to be identical to the end of the original first string.
4113 4. When gethostbyname() (or equivalent) is passed an IP address as a "host
4114 name", it returns that address as the IP address. On some operating
4115 systems (e.g. Solaris), it also passes back the IP address string as the
4116 "host name". However, on others (e.g. Linux), it passes back an empty
4117 string. Exim wasn't checking for this, and was changing the host name to an
4118 empty string, assuming it had been canonicized.
4120 5. Although rare, it is permitted to have more than one PTR record for a given
4121 IP address. I thought that gethostbyaddr() or getipnodebyaddr() always gave
4122 all the names associated with an address, because they do in Solaris.
4123 However, it seems that they do not in Linux for data that comes from the
4124 DNS. If an address in /etc/hosts has multiple names, they _are_ all given.
4125 I found this out when I moved to a new Linux workstation and tried to run
4126 the Exim test suite.
4128 To get round this problem I have changed the code so that it now does its
4129 own call to the DNS to look up PTR records when searching for a host name.
4130 If nothing can be found in the DNS, it tries gethostbyaddr(), so that
4131 addresses that are only in /etc/hosts are still found.
4133 This behaviour is, however, controlled by an option called host_lookup_
4134 order, which defaults to "bydns:byaddr". If people want to use the other
4135 order, or indeed, just use one or the other means of lookup, they can
4136 specify it in this variable.
4138 6. If a PTR record yields an empty name, Exim treats it as non-existent. In
4139 some operating systems, this comes back from gethostbyaddr() as an empty
4140 string, and this is what Exim used to test for. However, it seems that in
4141 other systems, "." is yielded. Exim now tests for this case too.
4143 7. The values of check_spool_space and check_log_space are now held internally
4144 as a number of kilobytes instead of an absolute number of bytes. If a
4145 numbers is specified without 'K' or 'M', it is rounded up to the nearest
4146 kilobyte. This means that much larger values can be stored.
4148 8. Exim monitor: an attempt to get the action menu when not actually pointing
4149 at a message produces an empty menu entitled "No message selected". This
4150 works on Solaris (OpenWindows). However, XFree86 does not like a menu with
4151 no entries in it ("Shell widget menu has zero width and/or height"). So I
4152 have added a single, blank menu entry in this case.
4154 9. Added ${quote_local_part.
4156 10. MIME decoding is now applied to the contents of Subject: header lines when
4159 11. Now that a reference to $sender_host_address automatically causes a reverse
4160 lookup to occur if necessary (4.13/18), there is no need to arrange for a
4161 host lookup before query-style lookups in lists that might use this
4162 variable. This has therefore been abolished, and the "net-" prefix is no
4163 longer necessary for query-style lookups.
4165 12. The Makefile for SCO_SV contained a setting of LDFLAGS. This appears to
4166 have been a typo for LFLAGS, so it has been changed.
4168 13. The install script calls Exim with "-C /dev/null" in order to find the
4169 version number. If ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX was set, this caused an error message
4170 to be output. Howeve, since Exim outputs its version number before the
4171 error, it didn't break the script. It just looked ugly. I fixed this by
4172 always allowing "-C /dev/null" if the caller is root.
4174 14. Ignore overlarge ACL variable number when reading spool file - insurance
4175 against a later release with more variables having written the file.
4177 15. The standard form for an IPv6 address literal was being rejected by EHLO.
4178 Example: [IPv6:2002:c1ed:8229:10:202:2dff:fe07:a42a]. Exim now accepts
4179 this, as well as the form without the "IPv6" on the front.
4181 16. Added CHOWN_COMMAND=/usr/sbin/chown and LIBS=-lresolv to the
4182 OS/Makefile-Darwin file.
4184 17. Fixed typo in lookups/ldap.c: D_LOOKUP should be D_lookup. This applied

4187 18. After change 4.21/52, "%ld" was used to format the contents of the $inode
4188 variable. However, some OS use ints for inodes. I've added cast to long int

4194 20. Routers used for verification do not need to specify transports. However,
4195 if such a router generated a host list, and callout was configured, Exim

4201 22. If LOOKUP_LSEARCH is defined, all three linear search methods (lsearch,

4204 them is set, LOOKUP_LSEARCH is forced.
4206 23. "exim -bV" now outputs a list of lookups that are included in the binary.

4213 26. Change 3.952/11 added an explicit directory sync on top of a file sync for
4214 Linux. It turns out that not all file systems support this. Apparently some
4215 versions of NFS do not. (It's rare to put Exim's spool on NFS, but people
4216 do it.) To cope with this, the error EINVAL, which means that sync-ing is
4217 not supported on the file descriptor, is now ignored when Exim is trying to
4218 sync a directory. This applies only to Linux.
4220 27. Added -DBIND_8_COMPAT to the CLFAGS setting for Darwin.
4222 28. In Darwin (MacOS X), the PAM headers are in /usr/include/pam and not in
4223 /usr/include/security. There's now a flag in OS/os.h-Darwin to cope with

4249 34. Testing for a connection timeout using "timeout_connect" in the retry rules
4250 did not work. The code looks as if it has *never* worked, though it appears
4251 to have been documented since at least releast 1.62. I have made it work.
4253 35. The "timeout_DNS" error in retry rules, also documented since at least
4254 1.62, also never worked. As it isn't clear exactly what this means, and
4255 clearly it isn't a major issue, I have abolished the feature by treating it
4256 as "timeout", and writing a warning to the main and panic logs.
4258 36. The display of retry rules for -brt wasn't always showing the error code
4261 37. Added new error conditions to retry rules: timeout_A, timeout_MX,
4262 timeout_connect_A, timeout_connect_MX.
4264 38. Rewriting the envelope sender at SMTP time did not allow it to be rewritten

4267 39. The daemon was not analysing the content of -oX till after it had closed
4268 stderr and disconnected from the controlling terminal. This meant that any

4270 the command was 0. By re-arranging the code a little, I've made the
4271 decoding happen first, so such errors now appear on stderr, and the return
4272 code is 1. However, the actual setting up of the sockets still happens in

4276 40. A daemon listener on a wildcard IPv6 socket that also accepts IPv4
4277 connections (as happens on some IP stacks) was logged at start up time as

4357 failures to open the logs.
4359 65. Users' Exim filters run in subprocesses under the user's uid. It is
4360 possible for a "deliver" command or an alias in a "personal" command to
4361 provoke an address rewrite. If logging of address rewriting is configured,
4362 this fails because the process is not running as root or exim. There may be
4363 a better way of dealing with this, but for the moment (because 4.30 needs
4364 to be released), I have disabled address rewrite logging when running a
4365 filter in a non-root, non-exim process.
4371 1. The buildconfig auxiliary program wasn't quoting the value set for
4372 HEADERS_CHARSET. This caused a compilation error complaining that 'ISO' was
4373 not defined. This bug was masked in 4.22 by the effect that was fixed in
4376 2. Some messages that were rejected after a message id was allocated were
4377 shown as "incomplete" by exigrep. It no longer does this for messages that
4378 are rejected by local_scan() or the DATA or non-SMTP ACLs.
4380 3. If a Message-ID: header used a domain literal in the ID, and Exim did not
4381 have allow_domain_literals set, the ID did not get logged in the <= line.
4382 Domain literals are now always recognized in Message-ID: header lines.
4384 4. The first argument for a ${extract expansion item is the key name or field
4385 number. Leading and trailing spaces in this item were not being ignored,
4386 causing some misleading effects.
4388 5. When deliver_drop_privilege was set, single queue runner processes started
4389 manually (i.e. by the command "exim -q") or by the daemon (which uses the
4390 same command in the process it spins off) were not dropping privilege.
4392 6. When the daemon running as "exim" started a queue runner, it always
4393 re-executed Exim in the spun-off process. This is a waste of effort when
4394 deliver_drop_privilege is set. The new process now just calls the
4395 queue-runner function directly.
4401 1. Typo in the src/EDITME file: it referred to HEADERS_DECODE_TO instead of
4404 2. Change 4.21/73 introduced a bug. The pid file path set by -oP was being
4405 ignored. Though the use of -oP was forcing the writing of a pid file, it
4406 was always written to the default place.
4408 3. If the message "no IP address found for host xxxx" is generated during
4409 incoming verification, it is now followed by identification of the incoming
4410 connection (so you can more easily find what provoked it).

4414 5. Added some features to "harden" Exim a bit more against certain attacks:
4416 (a) There is now a build-time option called FIXED_NEVER_USERS that can
4417 be put in Local/Makefile. This is like the never_users runtime option,
4418 but it cannot be overridden. The default setting is "root".
4420 (b) If ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX is defined in Local/Makefile, it specifies a
4421 prefix string with which any file named in a -C command line option
4424 (c) If ALT_CONFIG_ROOT_ONLY is defined in Local/Makefile, root privilege
4425 is retained for -C and -D only if the caller of Exim is root. Without
4426 it, the exim user may also use -C and -D and retain privilege.
4428 (d) If DISABLE_D_OPTION is defined in Local/Makefile, the use of the -D
4429 command line option is disabled.
4431 6. Macro names set by the -D option must start with an upper case letter, just
4432 like macro names defined in the configuration file.
4434 7. Added "dereference=" facility to LDAP.
4436 8. Two instances of the typo "uknown" in the source files are fixed.
4438 9. If a PERL_COMMAND setting in Local/Makefile was not at the start of a line,

4443 11. The SMTP synchronization check was not operating right at the start of an
4444 SMTP session. For example, it could not catch a HELO sent before the client
4445 waited for the greeting. There is now a check for outstanding input at the
4446 point when the greeting is written. Because of the duplex, asynchronous
4447 nature of TCP/IP, it cannot be perfect - the incorrect input may be on its
4448 way, but not yet received, when the check is performed.
4450 12. Added tcp_nodelay to make it possible to turn of the setting of TCP_NODELAY
4451 on TCP/IP sockets, because this apparently causes some broken clients to
4454 13. Installed revised OS/Makefile-CYGWIN and OS/os.c-cygwin (the .h file was

4457 14. The code for -bV that shows what is in the binary showed "mbx" when maildir

4468 18. Previously, a reference to $sender_host_name did not cause a DNS reverse
4469 lookup on its own. Something else was needed to trigger the lookup. For
4470 example, a match in host_lookup or the need for a host name in a host list.
4471 Now, if $sender_host_name is referenced and the host name has not yet been
4472 looked up, a lookup is performed. If the lookup fails, the variable remains
4473 empty, and $host_lookup_failed is set to "1".
4475 19. Added "eqi" as a case-independent comparison operator.
4477 20. The saslauthd authentication condition could segfault if neither service
4478 nor realm was specified.
4480 21. If an overflowing value such as "2048M" was set for message_size_limit, the
4481 error message that was logged was misleading, and incoming SMTP
4482 connections were dropped. The message is now more accurate, and temporary
4483 errors are given to SMTP connections.
4485 22. In some error situations (such as 21 above) Exim rejects all SMTP commands
4486 (except RSET) with a 421 error, until QUIT is received. However, it was
4487 failing to send a response to QUIT.
4489 23. The HELO ACL was being run before the code for helo_try_verify_hosts,
4490 which made it impossible to use "verify = helo" in the HELO ACL. The HELO
4491 ACL is now run after the helo_try_verify_hosts code.
4493 24. "{MD5}" and "{SHA1}" are now recognized as equivalent to "{md5"} and
4494 "{sha1}" in the "crypteq" expansion condition (in fact the comparison is
4495 case-independent, so other case variants are also recognized). Apparently
4496 some systems use these upper case variants.
4498 25. If more than two messages were waiting for the same host, and a transport
4499 filter was specified for the transport, Exim sent two messages over the
4500 same TCP/IP connection, and then failed with "socket operation on non-
4501 socket" when it tried to send the third.
4503 26. Added Exim::debug_write and Exim::log_write for embedded Perl use.
4505 27. The extern definition of crypt16() in expand.c was not being excluded when
4506 the OS had its own crypt16() function.

4529 34. Fixed an infelicity in the appendfile transport. When checking directories
4530 for a mailbox, to see if any needed to be created, it was accidentally
4531 using path names with one or more superfluous leading slashes; tracing
4532 would show up entries such as stat("///home/ph10", 0xFFBEEA48).
4534 35. If log_message is set on a "discard" verb in a MAIL or RCPT ACL, its
4535 contents are added to the log line that is written for every discarded
4536 recipient. (Previously a log_message setting was ignored.)
4538 36. The ${quote: operator now quotes the string if it is empty.
4540 37. The install script runs exim in order to find its version number. If for
4541 some reason other than non-existence or emptiness, which it checks, it
4542 could not run './exim', it was installing it with an empty version number,
4543 i.e. as "exim-". This error state is now caught, and the installation is
4546 38. An argument was missing from the function that creates an error message
4547 when Exim fails to connect to the socket for saslauthd authentication.
4548 This could cause Exim to crash, or give a corrupted message.
4550 39. Added isip, isip4, and isip6 to ${if conditions.
4552 40. The ACL variables $acl_xx are now saved with the message, and can be
4553 accessed later in routers, transports, and filters.
4555 41. The new lookup type nwildlsearch is like wildlsearch, except that the key
4556 strings in the file are not string-expanded.
4558 42. If a MAIL command specified a SIZE value that was too large to fit into an
4559 int variable, the check against message_size_limit failed. Such values are
4560 now forced to INT_MAX, which is around 2Gb for a 32-bit variable. Maybe one
4561 day this will have to be increased, but I don't think I want to be around
4562 when emails are that large.
4569 1. Removed HAVE_ICONV=yes from OS/Makefile-FreeBSD, since it seems that
4570 iconv() is not standard in FreeBSD.
4572 2. Change 4.21/17 was buggy and could cause stack overwriting on a system with
4573 IPv6 enabled. The observed symptom was a segmentation fault on return from
4574 the function os_common_find_running_interfaces() in src/os.c.
4576 3. In the check_special_case() function in daemon.c I had used "errno" as an
4577 argument name, which causes warnings on some systems. This was basically a
4578 typo, since it was named "eno" in the comments!
4580 4. The code that waits for the clock to tick (at a resolution of some fraction
4581 of a second) so as to ensure message-id uniqueness was always waiting for
4582 at least one whole tick, when it could have waited for less. [This is
4583 almost certainly not relevant at current processor speeds, where it is
4584 unlikely to ever wait at all. But we try to future-proof.]
4586 5. The function that sleeps for a time interval that includes fractions of a
4587 second contained a race. It did not block SIGALRM between setting the
4588 timer, and suspending (a couple of lines later). If the interval was short
4589 and the sigsuspend() was delayed until after it had expired, the suspension
4590 never ended. On busy systems this could lead to processes getting stuck for
4593 6. Some uncommon configurations may cause a lookup to happen in a queue runner
4594 process, before it forks any delivery processes. The open lookup caching
4595 mechanism meant that the open file or database connection was passed into
4596 the delivery process. The problem was that delivery processes always tidy
4597 up cached lookup data. This could cause a problem for the next delivery
4598 process started by the queue runner, because the external queue runner
4599 process does not know about the closure. So the next delivery process
4600 still has data in the lookup cache. In the case of a file lookup, there was
4601 no problem because closing a file descriptor in a subprocess doesn't affect
4602 the parent. However, if the lookup was caching a connection to a database,
4603 the connection was closed, and the second delivery process was likely to
4604 see errors such as "PGSQL: query failed: server closed the connection
4605 unexpectedly". The problem has been fixed by closing all cached lookups
4606 in a queue runner before running a delivery process.
4608 7. Compiler warning on Linux for the second argument of iconv(), which doesn't
4609 seem to have the "const" qualifier which it has on other OS. I've
4612 8. Change 4.21/2 was too strict. It is only if there are two authenticators
4613 *of the same type* (client or server) with the same public name that an
4614 error should be diagnosed.
4616 9. When Exim looked up a host name for an IP address, but failed to find the
4617 original IP address when looking up the host name (a safety check), it
4618 output the message "<ip address> does not match any IP for NULL", which was
4619 confusing, to say the least. The bug was that the host name should have
4620 appeared instead of "NULL".
4622 10. Since release 3.03, if Exim is called by a uid other than root or the Exim
4623 user that is built into the binary, and the -C or -D options is used, root
4624 privilege is dropped before the configuration file is read. In addition,
4625 logging is switched to stderr instead of the normal log files. If the
4626 configuration then re-defines the Exim user, the unprivileged environment
4627 is probably not what is expected, so Exim logs a panic warning message (but
4630 However, if deliver_drop_privilege is set, the unprivileged state may well
4631 be exactly what is intended, so the warning has been cut out in that case,
4632 and Exim is allowed to try to write to its normal log files.
4638 1. smtp_return_error_details was not giving details for temporary sender
4639 or receiver verification errors.
4641 2. Diagnose a configuration error if two authenticators have the same public
4644 3. Exim used not to create the message log file for a message until the first
4645 delivery attempt. This could be confusing when incoming messages were held
4646 for policy or load reasons. The message log file is now created at the time
4647 the message is received, and an initial "Received" line is written to it.
4649 4. The automatically generated man page for command line options had a minor
4650 bug that caused no ill effects; however, a more serious problem was that
4651 the procedure for building the man page automatically didn't always
4652 operate. Consequently, release 4.20 contains an out-of-date version. This
4653 shouldn't happen again.
4655 5. When building Exim with embedded Perl support, the script that builds the
4656 Makefile was calling 'perl' to find its compile-time parameters, ignoring
4657 any setting of PERL_COMMAND in Local/Makefile. This is now fixed.
4659 6. The freeze_tell option was not being used for messages that were frozen on
4660 arrival, either by an ACL or by local_scan().
4662 7. Added the smtp_incomplete_transaction log selector.

4667 9. Added tls_remember_esmtp to cope with YAEB. This allows AUTH and other
4668 ESMTP extensions after STARTTLS without a new EHLO, in contravention of the
4671 10. Logging of TCP/IP connections (when configured) now happens in the main
4672 daemon process instead of the child process, so that the TCP/IP connection
4673 count is more accurate (but it can never be perfect).
4675 11. The use of "drop" in a nested ACL was not being handled correctly in the
4676 outer ACL. Now, if condition failure induced by the nested "drop" causes
4677 the outer ACL verb to deny access ("accept" or "discard" after "endpass",
4678 or "require"), the connection is dropped.
4680 12. Similarly, "discard" in a nested ACL wasn't being handled. A nested ACL
4681 that yield "discard" can now be used with an "accept" or a "discard" verb,
4682 but an error is generated for any others (because I can't see a useful way
4683 to define what should happen).
4685 13. When an ACL is read dynamically from a file (or anywhere else), the lines
4686 are now processed in the same way as lines in the Exim configuration file.

4693 16. Check for letters, digits, hyphens, and dots in the names of dnslist

4696 17. At least on BSD, alignment is not guarenteed for the array of ifreq's
4697 returned from GIFCONF when Exim is trying to find the list of interfaces on
4698 a host. The code in os.c has been modified to copy each ifreq to an aligned
4699 structure in all cases.
4701 Also, in some cases, the returned ifreq's were being copied to a 'struct
4702 ifreq' on the stack, which was subsequently passed to host_ntoa(). That
4703 means the last couple of bytes of an IPv6 address could be chopped if the
4704 ifreq contained only a normal sockaddr (14 bytes storage).
4706 18. Named domain lists were not supported in the hosts_treat_as_local option.
4707 An entry such as +xxxx was not recognized, and was treated as a literal
4710 19. Ensure that header lines added by a DATA ACL are included in the reject log
4711 if the ACL subsequently rejects the message.
4713 20. Upgrade the cramtest.pl utility script to use Digest::MD5 instead of just

4716 21. When testing a filter file using -bf, Exim was writing a message when it
4717 took the sender from a "From " line in the message, but it was not doing so
4718 when it took $return_path from a Return-Path: header line. It now does.
4720 22. If the contents of a "message" modifier for a "warn" ACL verb do not begin
4721 with a valid header line field name (a series of printing characters
4722 terminated by a colon, Exim now inserts X-ACL-Warn: at the beginning.
4724 23. Changed "disc" in the source to "disk" to conform to the documentation and
4725 the book and for uniformity.
4727 24. Ignore Sendmail's -Ooption=value command line item.
4729 25. When execve() failed while trying to run a command in a pipe transport,
4730 Exim was returning EX_UNAVAILBLE (69) from the subprocess. However, this
4731 could be confused with a return value of 69 from the command itself. This
4732 has been changed to 127, the value the shell returns if it is asked to run
4733 a non-existent command. The wording for the related log line suggests a
4734 non-existent command as the problem.
4736 26. If received_header_text expands to an empty string, do not add a Received:
4737 header line to the message. (Well, it adds a token one on the spool, but
4738 marks it "old" so that it doesn't get used or transmitted.)
4740 27. Installed eximstats 1.28 (addition of -nt option).
4742 28. There was no check for failure on the call to getsockname() in the daemon
4743 code. This can fail if there is a shortage of resources on the system, with
4744 ENOMEM, for example. A temporary error is now given on failure.
4746 29. Contrary to the C standard, it seems that in some environments, the
4747 equivalent of setlocale(LC_ALL, "C") is not obeyed at the start of a C
4748 program. Exim now does this explicitly; it affects the formatting of
4749 timestamps using strftime().
4751 30. If exiqsumm was given junk data, it threw up some uninitialized variable
4752 complaints. I've now initialized all the variables, to avoid this.
4754 32. Header lines added by a system filter were not being "seen" during
4755 transport-time rewrites.
4757 33. The info_callback() function passed to OpenSSL is set up with type void
4758 (*)(SSL *, int, int), as described somewhere. However, when calling the
4759 function (actually a macro) that sets it up, the type void(*)() is
4760 expected. I've put in a cast to prevent warnings from picky compilers.
4762 34. If a DNS black list lookup found a CNAME record, but there were no A
4763 records associated with the domain it pointed at, Exim crashed.
4765 35. If a DNS black list lookup returned more than one A record, Exim ignored
4766 all but the first. It now scans all returned addresses if a particular IP
4767 value is being sought. In this situation, the contents of the
4768 $dnslist_value variable are a list of all the addresses, separated by a
4771 36. Tightened up the rules for host name lookups using reverse DNS. Exim used
4772 to accept a host name and all its aliases if the forward lookup for any of
4773 them yielded the IP address of the incoming connection. Now it accepts only
4774 those names whose forward lookup yields the correct IP address. Any other
4775 names are discarded. This closes a loophole whereby a rogue DNS
4776 administrator could create reverse DNS records to break through a
4777 wildcarded host restriction in an ACL.
4779 37. If a user filter or a system filter that ran in a subprocess used any of
4780 the numerical variables ($1, $2 etc), or $thisaddress, in a pipe command,
4781 the wrong values were passed to the pipe command ($thisaddress had the
4782 value of $0, $0 had the value of $1, etc). This bug was introduced by
4783 change 4.11/101, and not discovered because I wrote an inadequate test. :-(
4785 38. Improved the line breaking for long SMTP error messages from ACLs.
4786 Previously, if there was no break point between 40 and 75 characters, Exim
4787 left the rest of the message alone. Two changes have been made: (a) I've
4788 reduced the minimum length to 35 characters; (b) if it can't find a break
4789 point between 35 and 75 characters, it looks ahead and uses the first one
4790 that it finds. This may give the occasional overlong line, but at least the
4791 remaining text gets split now.
4793 39. Change 82 of 4.11 was unimaginative. It assumed the limit on the number of
4794 file descriptors might be low, and that setting 1000 would always raise it.
4795 It turns out that in some environments, the limit is already over 1000 and
4796 that lowering it causes trouble. So now Exim takes care not to decrease it.
4798 40. When delivering a message, the value of $return_path is set to $sender_
4799 address at the start of routing (routers may change the value). By an
4800 oversight, this default was not being set up when an address was tested by
4801 -bt or -bv, which affected the outcome if any router or filter referred to
4804 41. The idea of the "warn" ACL verb is that it adds a header or writes to the
4805 log only when "message" or "log_message" are set. However, if one of the
4806 conditions was an address verification, or a call to a nested ACL, the
4807 messages generated by the underlying test were being passed through. This
4808 no longer happens. The underlying message is available in $acl_verify_
4809 message for both "message" and "log_message" expansions, so it can be
4810 passed through if needed.
4812 42. Added RFC 2047 interpretation of header lines for $h_ expansions, with a
4813 new expansion $bh_ to give the encoded byte string without charset
4814 translation. Translation happens only if iconv() is available; HAVE_ICONV
4815 indicates this at build time. HEADERS_CHARSET gives the charset to
4816 translate to; headers_charset can change it in the configuration, and
4817 "headers charset" can change it in an individual filter file.
4819 43. Now that we have a default RFC 2047 charset (see above), the code in Exim
4820 that creates RFC 2047 encoded "words" labels them as that charset instead
4821 of always using iso-8859-1. The cases are (i) the explicit ${rfc2047:
4822 expansion operator; (ii) when Exim creates a From: line for a local
4823 message; (iii) when a header line is rewritten to include a "phrase" part.
4825 44. Nasty bug in exiqsumm: the regex to skip already-delivered addresses was
4826 buggy, causing it to skip the first lines of messages whose message ID
4827 ended in 'D'. This would not have bitten before Exim release 4.14, because
4828 message IDs were unlikely to end in 'D' before then. The effect was to have
4829 incorrect size information for certain domains.
4831 45. #include "config.h" was missing at the start of the crypt16.c module. This
4832 caused trouble on Tru64 (aka OSF1) systems, because HAVE_CRYPT16 was not
4835 46. If there was a timeout during a "random" callout check, Exim treated it as
4836 a failure of the random address, and carried on sending RSET and the real
4837 address. If the delay was just some slowness somewhere, the response to the
4838 original RCPT would be taken as a response to RSET and so on, causing
4839 mayhem of various kinds.
4841 47. Change 50 for 4.20 was a heap of junk. I don't know what I was thinking
4842 when I implemented it. It didn't allow for the fact that some option values
4843 may legitimatetly be negative (e.g. size_addition), and it didn't even do
4844 the right test for positive values.
4846 48. Domain names in DNS records are case-independent. Exim always looks them up
4847 in lower case. Some resolvers return domain names in exactly the case they
4848 appear in the zone file, that is, they may contain uppercase letters. Not
4849 all resolvers do this - some return always lower case. Exim was treating a
4850 change of case by a resolver as a change of domain, similar to a widening
4851 of a domain abbreviation. This triggered its re-routing code and so it was
4852 trying to route what was effectively the same domain again. This normally
4853 caused routing to fail (because the router wouldn't handle the domain
4854 twice). Now Exim checks for this case specially, and just changes the
4855 casing of the domain that it ultimately uses when it transmits the message
4858 49. Added Sieve (RFC 3028) support, courtesy of Michael Haardt's contributed
4861 50. If a filter generated a file delivery with a non-absolute name (possible if
4862 no home directory exists for the router), the forbid_file option was not
4865 51. Added '&' feature to dnslists, to provide bit mask matching in addition to
4866 the existing equality matching.
4868 52. Exim was using ints instead of ino_t variables in some places where it was
4869 dealing with inode numbers.
4871 53. If TMPDIR is defined in Local/Makefile (default in src/EDITME is
4872 TMPDIR="/tmp"), Exim checks for the presence of an environment variable
4873 called TMPDIR, and if it finds it is different, it changes its value.
4875 54. The smtp_printf() function is now made available to local_scan() so
4876 additional output lines can be written before returning. There is also an
4877 smtp_fflush() function to enable the detection of a dropped connection.
4878 The variables smtp_input and smtp_batched_input are exported to
4881 55. Changed the default runtime configuration: the message "Unknown user"
4882 has been removed from the ACL, and instead placed on the localuser router,
4883 using the cannot_route_message feature. This means that any verification
4884 failures that generate their own messages won't get overridden. Similarly,
4885 the "Unrouteable address" message that was in the ACL for unverifiable
4886 relay addresses has also been removed.
4888 56. Added hosts_avoid_esmtp to the smtp transport.
4890 57. The exicyclog script was not checking for the esoteric option
4891 CONFIGURE_FILE_USE_EUID in the Local/Makefile. It now does this, but it
4892 will work only if exicyclog is run under the appropriate euid.
4894 58. Following a discussion on the list, the rules by which Exim recognises line
4895 endings on incoming messages have been changed. The -dropcr and drop_cr
4896 options are now no-ops, retained only for backwards compatibility. The
4897 following line terminators are recognized: LF CRLF CR. However, special
4898 processing applies to CR:
4900 (i) The sequence CR . CR does *not* terminate an incoming SMTP message,
4901 nor a local message in the state where . is a terminator.
4903 (ii) If a bare CR is encountered in a header line, an extra space is added
4904 after the line terminator so as not to end the header. The reasoning
4905 behind this is that bare CRs in header lines are most likely either
4906 to be mistakes, or people trying to play silly games.
4908 59. The size of a message, as listed by "-bp" or in the Exim monitor window,
4909 was being incorrectly given as 18 bytes larger than it should have been.
4910 This is a VOB (very old bug).
4912 60. This may never have affected anything current, but just in case it has:
4913 When the local host is found other than at the start of a list of hosts,
4914 the local host, those with the same MX, and any that follow, are discarded.
4915 When the list in question was part of a longer list of hosts, the following
4916 hosts (not currently being processed) were also being discarded. This no
4917 longer happens. I'm not sure if this situation could ever has previously
4920 61. Added the "/MX" feature to lists of hosts in the manualroute and query
4923 62. Whenever Exim generates a new message, it now adds an Auto-Submitted:
4924 header. This is something that is recommended in a new Internet Draft, and
4925 is something that is documented as being done by Sendmail. There are two
4926 possible values. For messages generated by the autoreply transport, Exim
4929 Auto-Submitted: auto-replied
4931 whereas for all other generated messages (e.g. bounces) it adds
4933 Auto-Submitted: auto-generated
4935 63. The "personal" condition in filters now includes a test for the
4936 Auto-Submitted: header. If it contains the string "auto-" the message it
4937 not considered personal.
4939 64. Added rcpt_include_affixes as a generic transport option.
4941 65. Added queue_only_override (default true).
4943 66. Added the syslog_duplication option.
4945 67. If what should have been the first header line of a message consisted of
4946 a space followed by a colon, Exim was mis-interpreting it as a header line.
4947 It isn't of course - it is syntactically invalid and should therefore be
4948 treated as the start of the message body. The misbehaviour could have
4949 caused a number of strange effects, including loss of data in subsequent
4950 header lines, and spool format errors.
4952 68. Formerly, the AUTH parameter on a MAIL command was trusted only if the
4953 client host had authenticated. This control can now be exercised by an ACL
4954 for more flexibility.
4956 69. By default, callouts do not happen when testing with -bh. There is now a
4957 variant, -bhc, which does actually run the callout code, including
4958 consulting and updating the callout cache.
4960 70. Added support for saslauthd authentication, courtesy of Alexander
4963 71. If statvfs() failed on the spool or log directories while checking their
4964 size for availability, Exim confusingly gave the error "space shortage".
4965 Furthermore, in debugging mode it crashed with a floating point exception.
4966 These checks are done if check_{spool,log}_{space,inodes} are set, and when
4967 an SMTP message arrives with SIZE= on the MAIL command. As this is a really
4968 serious problem, Exim now writes to the main and panic logs when this
4969 happens, with details of the failure. It then refuses to accept the
4970 incoming message, giving the message "spool directory problem" or "log
4971 directory problem" with a 421 code for SMTP messages.
4973 72. When Exim is about to re-exec itself, it ensures that the file descriptors
4974 0, 1, and 2 exist, because some OS complain for execs without them (see
4975 ChangeLog 4.05/30). If necessary, Exim opens /dev/null to use for these
4976 descriptors. However, the code omitted to check that the open succeeded,
4977 causing mysterious errors if for some reason the permissions on /dev/null
4978 got screwed. Now Exim writes a message to the main and panic logs, and
4979 bombs out if it can't open /dev/null.
4981 73. Re-vamped the way daemon_smtp_port, local_interfaces, and -oX work and
4982 interact so that it is all more flexible. It is supposed to remain
4983 backwards compatible. Also added extra_local_interfaces.
4985 74. Invalid data sent to a SPA (NTLM) server authenticator could cause the code
4986 to bomb out with an assertion failure - to the client this appears as a
4987 connection drop. This problem occurs in the part of the code that was taken
4988 from the Samba project. Fortunately, the assertion is in a very simple
4989 function, so I have fixed this by reproducing the function inline in the
4990 one place where it is called, and arranging for authentication to fail
4991 instead of killing the process with assert().
4993 75. The SPA client code was not working when the server requested OEM rather
4994 than Unicode encoding.
4996 76. Added code to make require_files with a specific uid setting more usable in
4997 the case where statting the file as root fails - usually a non-root-mounted
4998 NFS file system. When this happens and the failure is EACCES, Exim now
4999 forks a subprocess and does the per-uid checking as the relevant uid.
5001 77. Added process_log_path.
5003 78. If log_file_path was not explicitly set, a setting of check_log_space or
5004 check_log_inodes was ignored.
5006 79. If a space check for the spool or log partitions fails, the incident is now
5007 logged. Of course, in the latter case the data may get lost...
5009 80. Added the %p formatting code to string_format() so that it can be used to
5010 print addresses in debug_print(). Adjusted all the address printing in the
5011 debugging in store.c to use %p rather than %d.
5013 81. There was a concern that a line of code in smtp_in.c could overflow a
5014 buffer if a HELO/EHLO command was given followed by 500 or so spaces. As
5015 initially expressed, the concern was not well-founded, because trailing
5016 spaces are removed early. However, if the trailing spaces were followed by
5017 a NULL, they did not get removed, so the overflow was possible. Two fixes
5020 (a) I re-wrote the offending code in a cleaner fashion.
5021 (b) If an incoming SMTP command contains a NULL character, it is rejected
5024 82. When Exim changes uid/gid to the Exim user at daemon start time, it now
5025 runs initgroups(), so that if the Exim user is in any additional groups,
5026 they will be used during message reception.
