212 means that when you upgrde Exim will forget old rate measurements.)
214 Exim now checks that the per_* options are used with an update mode that
215 makes sense for the current ACL. For example, when Exim is processing a
216 message (e.g. acl_smtp_rcpt or acl_smtp_data, etc.) you can specify
217 per_mail/leaky or per_mail/strict; otherwise (e.g. in acl_smtp_helo) you
218 must specify per_mail/readonly. If you omit the update mode it defaults to
219 /leaky where that makes sense (as before) or /readonly where required.
221 The /noupdate option is now undocumented but still supported for
222 backwards compatibility. It is equivalent to /readonly except that in
223 ACLs where /readonly is required you may specify /leaky/noupdate or
224 /strict/noupdate which are treated the same as /readonly.
226 A useful new feature is the /count= option. This is a generalization
227 of the per_byte option, so that you can measure the throughput of other
228 aggregate values. For example, the per_byte option is now equivalent
229 to per_mail/count=${if >{0}{$message_size} {0} {$message_size} }.
231 The per_rcpt option has been generalized using the /count= mechanism
232 (though it's more complicated than the per_byte equivalence). When it is
233 used in acl_smtp_rcpt, the per_rcpt option adds recipients to the
234 measured rate one at a time; if it is used later (e.g. in acl_smtp_data)
235 or in a non-SMTP ACL it adds all the recipients in one go. (The latter
236 /count=$recipients_count behaviour used to work only in non-SMTP ACLs.)
237 Note that using per_rcpt with a non-readonly update mode in more than
238 one ACL will cause the recipients to be double-counted. (The per_mail
239 and per_byte options don't have this problem.)
241 The handling of very low rates has changed slightly. If the computed rate
242 is less than the event's count (usually one) then this event is the first
243 after a long gap. In this case the rate is set to the same as this event's
244 count, so that the first message of a spam run is counted properly.
246 The major new feature is a mechanism for counting the rate of unique
247 events. The new per_addr option counts the number of different
248 recipients that someone has sent messages to in the last time period. It
249 behaves like per_rcpt if all the recipient addresses are different, but
250 duplicate recipient addresses do not increase the measured rate. Like
251 the /count= option this is a general mechanism, so the per_addr option
252 is equivalent to per_rcpt/unique=$local_part@$domain. You can, for
253 example, measure the rate that a client uses different sender addresses
254 with the options per_mail/unique=$sender_address. There are further

832 contain colons. This was done some time before quoting was made available
833 in lsearch files. However, iplsearch files do require colons in IPv6 keys
834 (notated using the quote facility) so as to distinguish them from IPv4
835 keys. This meant that lookups for IP addresses in host lists did not work
836 for iplsearch lookups.
838 This has been fixed by arranging for IPv6 addresses to be expressed with
839 colons if the lookup type is iplsearch. This is not incompatible, because
840 previously such lookups could never work.
842 The situation is now rather anomolous, since one *can* have colons in
843 ordinary lsearch keys. However, making the change in all cases is
844 incompatible and would probably break a number of configurations.

1065 PH/33 Compile failed with OpenSSL 0.9.8e. This was due to a coding error in
1066 Exim which did not show up earlier: it was assuming that a call to
1067 SSL_CTX_set_info_callback() might give an error value. In fact, there is
1068 no error. In previous releases of OpenSSL, SSL_CTX_set_info_callback()
1069 was a macro that became an assignment, so it seemed to work. This has
1070 changed to a proper function call with a void return, hence the compile
1071 error. Exim's code has been fixed.
1073 PH/34 Change HDA_SIZE in oracle.c from 256 to 512. This is needed for 64-bit

1085 criteria to be more general.
1087 PH/38 The host_find_failed option in the manualroute router can now be set
1088 to "ignore", to completely ignore a host whose IP address cannot be
1089 found. If all hosts are ignored, the behaviour is controlled by the new
1090 host_all_ignored option.
1092 PH/39 In a list of hosts for manualroute, if one item (either because of multi-
1093 homing or because of multiple MX records with /mx) generated more than
1094 one IP address, and the following item turned out to be the local host,
1095 all the secondary addresses of the first item were incorrectly removed
1096 from the list, along with the local host and any following hosts (which
1097 is what is supposed to happen).
1099 PH/40 When Exim receives a message, it writes the login name, uid, and gid of
1100 whoever called Exim into the -H file. In the case of the daemon it was
1101 behaving confusingly. When first started, it used values for whoever
1102 started the daemon, but after a SIGHUP it used the Exim user (because it
1103 calls itself on a restart). I have changed the code so that it now always
1106 PH/41 (Following a suggestion from Tony Finch) If all the RCPT commands in a
1107 message are rejected with the same error (e.g. no authentication or bad

1129 (unfortunately, this is allowed). However, in many cases there won't be
1130 any further data because there won't be any more messages to send. A call
1131 to select() can be used: if it shows that the input is "ready", there is
1132 either input waiting, or the socket has been closed. An attempt to read
1133 the next input character can distinguish the two cases. Previously, Exim
1134 would have sent an OK response which the client would never have see.
1135 This could lead to message repetition. This fix should cure that, at
1136 least in a lot of common cases.
1138 PH/45 Do not advertise STARTTLS in response to HELP unless it would be
1139 advertised in response to EHLO.
1145 PH/01 Two more bugs that were introduced by 4.64/PH/07, in addition to the one
1146 fixed by 4.65/MH/01 (is this a record?) are fixed:
1148 (i) An empty string was always treated as zero by the numeric comparison
1149 operators. This behaviour has been restored.
1151 (ii) It is documented that the numeric comparison operators always treat
1152 their arguments as decimal numbers. This was broken in that numbers
1153 starting with 0 were being interpreted as octal.
1155 While fixing these problems I realized that there was another issue that
1156 hadn't been noticed. Values of message_size_limit (both the global option
1157 and the transport option) were treated as octal if they started with 0.
1158 The documentation was vague. These values are now always treated as
1159 decimal, and I will make that clear in the documentation.
1165 TK/01 Disable default definition of HAVE_LINUX_SENDFILE. Clashes with
1166 Linux large file support (_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64) on older glibc
1169 MH/01 Don't check that the operands of numeric comparison operators are
1170 integers when their expansion is in "skipping" mode (fixes bug

1173 PH/01 If a system filter or a router generates more than SHRT_MAX (32767)
1174 child addresses, Exim now panics and dies. Previously, because the count
1175 is held in a short int, deliveries were likely to be lost. As such a

1177 (performance will be very, very poor), I have chosen to impose a limit

1184 TK/01 Bugzilla #401. Fix DK spooling code so that it can overwrite a
1185 leftover -K file (the existence of which was triggered by #402).
1186 While we were at it, introduced process PID as part of the -K
1187 filename. This should rule out race conditions when creating

1198 TF/01 In the add_headers option to the mail command in an Exim filter,
1199 there was a bug that Exim would claim a syntax error in any
1200 header after the first one which had an odd number of characters
1203 PH/01 If a server that rejects MAIL FROM:<> was the target of a sender
1204 callout verification, Exim cached a "reject" for the entire domain. This
1205 is correct for most verifications, but it is not correct for a recipient
1206 verification with use_sender or use_postmaster set, because in that case
1207 the callout does not use MAIL FROM:<>. Exim now distinguishes the special
1208 case of MAIL FROM:<> rejection from other early rejections (e.g.
1209 rejection of HELO). When verifying a recipient using a non-null MAIL
1210 address, the cache is ignored if it shows MAIL FROM:<> rejection.
1211 Whatever the result of the callout, the value of the domain cache is

1266 (e) A simple test gave the error "authentication client didn't specify
1267 service in request". It would seem that Dovecot has changed its

1271 PH/13 Added $message_headers_raw to provide the headers without RFC 2047
1274 PH/14 Corrected misleading output from -bv when -v was also used. Suppose the
1275 address A is aliased to B and C, where B exists and C does not. Without
1276 -v the output is "A verified" because verification stops after a
1277 successful redirection if more than one address is generated. However,
1278 with -v the child addresses are also verified. Exim was outputting "A
1279 failed to verify" and then showing the successful verification for C,
1280 with its parentage. It now outputs "B failed to verify", showing B's
1281 parentage before showing the successful verification of C.
1283 PH/15 Applied Michael Deutschmann's patch to allow DNS black list processing to
1284 look up a TXT record in a specific list after matching in a combined
1287 PH/16 It seems that the options setting for the resolver (RES_DEFNAMES and
1288 RES_DNSRCH) can affect the behaviour of gethostbyname() and friends when
1289 they consult the DNS. I had assumed they would set it the way they
1290 wanted; and indeed my experiments on Linux seem to show that in some
1291 cases they do (I could influence IPv6 lookups but not IPv4 lookups).
1292 To be on the safe side, however, I have now made the interface to
1293 host_find_byname() similar to host_find_bydns(), with an argument
1294 containing the DNS resolver options. The host_find_byname() function now
1295 sets these options at its start, just as host_find_bydns() does. The smtp
1296 transport options dns_qualify_single and dns_search_parents are passed to
1297 host_find_byname() when gethostbyname=TRUE in this transport. Other uses
1298 of host_find_byname() use the default settings of RES_DEFNAMES
1299 (qualify_single) but not RES_DNSRCH (search_parents).
1301 PH/17 Applied (a modified version of) Nico Erfurth's patch to make
1302 spool_read_header() do less string testing, by means of a preliminary
1303 switch on the second character of optional "-foo" lines. (This is
1304 overdue, caused by the large number of possibilities that now exist.
1305 Originally there were few.) While I was there, I also converted the
1306 str(n)cmp tests so they don't re-test the leading "-" and the first
1307 character, in the hope this might squeeze out yet more improvement.
1309 PH/18 Two problems with "group" syntax in header lines when verifying: (1) The
1310 flag allowing group syntax was set by the header_syntax check but not
1311 turned off, possible causing trouble later; (2) The flag was not being
1312 set at all for the header_verify test, causing "group"-style headers to
1313 be rejected. I have now set it in this case, and also caused header_
1314 verify to ignore an empty address taken from a group. While doing this, I
1315 came across some other cases where the code for allowing group syntax
1316 while scanning a header line wasn't quite right (mostly, not resetting
1317 the flag correctly in the right place). These bugs could have caused
1318 trouble for malformed header lines. I hope it is now all correct.
1320 PH/19 The functions {pwcheck,saslauthd}_verify_password() are always called
1321 with the "reply" argument non-NULL. The code, however (which originally
1322 came from elsewhere) had *some* tests for NULL when it wrote to *reply,
1323 but it didn't always do it. This confused somebody who was copying the
1324 code for some other use. I have removed all the tests.
1326 PH/20 It was discovered that the GnuTLS code had support for RSA_EXPORT, a
1327 feature that was used to support insecure browsers during the U.S. crypto
1328 embargo. It requires special client support, and Exim is probably the
1329 only MTA that supported it -- and would never use it because real RSA is
1330 always available. This code has been removed, because it had the bad
1331 effect of slowing Exim down by computing (never used) parameters for the
1332 RSA_EXPORT functionality.
1334 PH/21 On the advice of Timo Sirainen, added a check to the dovecot
1335 authenticator to fail if there's a tab character in the incoming data
1336 (there should never be unless someone is messing about, as it's supposed
1337 to be base64-encoded). Also added, on Timo's advice, the "secured" option
1338 if the connection is using TLS or if the remote IP is the same as the
1339 local IP, and the "valid-client-cert option" if a client certificate has
1342 PH/22 As suggested by Dennis Davis, added a server_condition option to *all*

1363 before) are ignored.
1365 PH/28 Fixed bug in backwards-compatibility feature of PH/09 (thanks to John
1366 Jetmore). It would have mis-read ACL variables from pre-4.61 spool files.
1368 PH/29 [Removed. This was a change that I later backed out, and forgot to
1369 correct the ChangeLog entry (that I had efficiently created) before
1370 committing the later change.]
1372 PH/30 Exim was sometimes attempting to deliver messages that had suffered
1373 address errors (4xx response to RCPT) over the same connection as other
1374 messages routed to the same hosts. Such deliveries are always "forced",
1375 so retry times are not inspected. This resulted in far too many retries
1376 for the affected addresses. The effect occurred only when there were more
1377 hosts than the hosts_max_try setting in the smtp transport when it had
1378 the 4xx errors. Those hosts that it had tried were not added to the list
1379 of hosts for which the message was waiting, so if all were tried, there
1380 was no problem. Two fixes have been applied:
1382 (i) If there are any address or message errors in an SMTP delivery, none
1383 of the hosts (tried or untried) are now added to the list of hosts
1384 for which the message is waiting, so the message should not be a
1385 candidate for sending over the same connection that was used for a
1386 successful delivery of some other message. This seems entirely
1387 reasonable: after all the message is NOT "waiting for some host".
1388 This is so "obvious" that I'm not sure why it wasn't done
1389 previously. Hope I haven't missed anything, but it can't do any
1390 harm, as the worst effect is to miss an optimization.
1392 (ii) If, despite (i), such a delivery is accidentally attempted, the
1393 routing retry time is respected, so at least it doesn't keep
1394 hammering the server.
1396 PH/31 Installed Andrew Findlay's patch to close the writing end of the socket
1397 in ${readsocket because some servers need this prod.
1399 PH/32 Added some extra debug output when updating a wait-xxx database.
1401 PH/33 The hint "could be header name not terminated by colon", which has been

1405 PH/34 The spec says: "With one important exception, whenever a domain list is
1406 being scanned, $domain contains the subject domain." There was at least
1407 one case where this was not true.
1409 PH/35 The error "getsockname() failed: connection reset by peer" was being
1410 written to the panic log as well as the main log, but it isn't really
1411 panic-worthy as it just means the connection died rather early on. I have
1412 removed the panic log writing for the ECONNRESET error when getsockname()
1415 PH/36 After a 4xx response to a RCPT error, that address was delayed (in queue
1416 runs only) independently of the message's sender address. This meant
1417 that, if the 4xx error was in fact related to the sender, a different
1418 message to the same recipient with a different sender could confuse
1419 things. In particualar, this can happen when sending to a greylisting
1420 server, but other circumstances could also provoke similar problems.
1421 I have changed the default so that the retry time for these errors is now
1422 based a combination of the sender and recipient addresses. This change
1423 can be overridden by setting address_retry_include_sender=false in the
1426 PH/37 For LMTP over TCP/IP (the smtp transport), error responses from the
1427 remote server are returned as part of bounce messages. This was not
1428 happening for LMTP over a pipe (the lmtp transport), but now it is the
1429 same for both kinds of LMTP.
1431 PH/38 Despite being documented as not happening, Exim was rewriting addresses
1432 in header lines that were in fact CNAMEs. This is no longer the case.

1726 was calculated. There was no check that a delivery was happening into an
1727 excluded directory. This bug has been fixed by ignoring all quota

1736 PH/01 The code for finding all the local interface addresses on a FreeBSD
1737 system running IPv6 was broken. This may well have applied to all BSD
1738 systems, as well as to others that have similar system calls. The broken
1739 code found IPv4 interfaces correctly, but gave incorrect values for the
1740 IPv6 interfaces. In particular, ::1 was not found. The effect in Exim was
1741 that it would not match correctly against @[] and not recognize the IPv6
1744 PH/02 The ipliteral router was not recognizing addresses of the form user@
1745 [ipv6:....] because it didn't know about the "ipv6:" prefix.

1836 PH/19 When calculating a retry time, Exim used to measure the "time since
1837 failure" by looking at the "first failed" field in the retry record. Now
1838 it does not use this if it is later than than the arrival time of the
1839 message. Instead it uses the arrival time. This makes for better
1840 behaviour in cases where some deliveries succeed, thus re-setting the
1841 "first failed" field. An example is a quota failure for a huge message
1842 when small messages continue to be delivered. Without this change, the
1843 "time since failure" will always be short, possible causing more frequent
1844 delivery attempts for the huge message than are intended.

1847 PH/20 Added $auth1, $auth2, $auth3 to contain authentication data (as well as

1945 files were ending up world-writeable. This was not a big issue, because,
1946 being within the spool directory, they were not world-accessible. I have
1947 created a function called modefopen, which takes an additional mode
1948 argument. It sets umask(777), creates the file, chmods it to the required
1949 mode, then resets the umask. All the relevant calls to fopen() in the
1950 content scanning code have been changed to use this function.
1952 PH/43 If retry_interval_max is set greater than 24 hours, it is quietly reset
1953 to 24 hours. This avoids potential overflow problems when processing G
1954 and H retry rules. I suspect nobody ever tinkers with this value.

1958 PH/45 When the plaintext authenticator is running as a client, the server's

2071 PH/71 Fixed an obscure and subtle bug (thanks Alexander & Matthias). The
2072 function verify_get_ident() calls ip_connect() to connect a socket, but
2073 if the "connect()" function timed out, ip_connect() used to close the
2074 socket. However, verify_get_ident() also closes the socket later, and in
2075 between Exim writes to the log, which may get opened at this point. When
2076 the socket was closed in ip_connect(), the log could get the same file
2077 descriptor number as the socket. This naturally causes chaos. The fix is
2078 not to close the socket in ip_connect(); the socket should be closed by
2079 the function that creates it. There was only one place in the code where
2080 this was missing, in the iplookup router, which I don't think anybody now
2081 uses, but I've fixed it anyway.
2083 PH/72 Make dns_again_means_nonexist apply to lookups using gethostbyname() as
2084 well as to direct DNS lookups. Otherwise the handling of names in host
2085 lists is inconsistent and therefore confusing.
2091 PH/01 Two changes to the default runtime configuration:

2548 PH/06 There is a timeout for writing blocks of data, set by, e.g. data_timeout

2550 write() function, the timeout was being re-applied to each part-write.
2551 This seems wrong - if the receiver was accepting one byte at a time it
2552 would take for ever. The timeout is now adjusted when this happens. It

2690 specify a transport. However, if an address that was verified by such a
2691 router was the subject of a callout, Exim crashed because it tried to
2692 read the rcpt_include_affixes from the non-existent transport. Now it
2693 just assumes that the setting of that option is false. This bug was
2694 introduced by 4.51/PH/31.
2696 PH/28 Changed -d+all to exclude +memory, because that information is very
2697 rarely of interest, but it makes the output a lot bigger. People tend to
2698 do -d+all out of habit.
2700 PH/29 Removed support for the Linux-libc5 build, as it is obsolete and the
2701 code in os-type was giving problems when libc.so lives in lib64, like on
2704 PH/30 Exim's DNS code uses the original T_xxx names for DNS record times. These
2705 aren't the modern standard, and it seems that some systems' include files
2706 don't always have them. Exim was already checking for some of the newer
2707 ones like T_AAAA, and defining it itself. I've added checks for all the
2708 record types that Exim uses.
2710 PH/31 When using GnuTLS, if the parameters cache file did not exist, Exim was
2711 not automatically generating a new one, as it is supposed to. This
2712 prevented TLS from working. If the file did exist, but contained invalid
2713 data, a new version was generated, as expected. It was only the case of a
2714 non-existent file that was broken.
2716 TK/10 Domainkeys: Fix a bug in verification that caused a crash in conjunction
2717 with a change in libdomainkeys > 0.64.
2719 TK/11 Domainkeys: Change the logic how the "testing" policy flag is retrieved

2923 sieve_useraddress and sieve_subaddress to the redirect router.
2925 PH/30 In these circumstances:
2926 . Two addresses routed to the same list of hosts;
2927 . First host does not offer TLS;
2928 . First host accepts first address;
2929 . First host gives temporary error to second address;
2930 . Second host offers TLS and a TLS session is established;

2932 Exim incorrectly logged both deliveries with the TLS parameters (cipher

2953 clutter, but the tables that are indexed by ACL_WHERE_xxx values had been

2958 PH/37 Exim used to check for duplicate addresses in the middle of routing, on
2959 the grounds that routing the same address twice would always produce the
2960 same answer. This might have been true once, but it is certainly no
2961 longer true now. Routing a child address may depend on the previous
2962 routing that produced that child. Some complicated redirection strategies
2963 went wrong when messages had multiple recipients, and made Exim's
2964 behaviour dependent on the order in which the addresses were given.
2966 I have moved the duplicate checking until after the routing is complete.
2967 Exim scans the addresses that are assigned to local and remote
2968 transports, and removes any duplicates. This means that more work will be
2969 done, as duplicates will always all be routed, but duplicates are
2970 presumably rare, so I don't expect this is of any significance.
2972 For deliveries to pipes, files, and autoreplies, the duplicate checking
2973 still happens during the routing process, since they are not going to be
2976 PH/38 Installed a patch from Ian Freislich, with the agreement of Tom Kistner.
2977 It corrects a timeout issue with spamd. This is Ian's comment: "The
2978 background is that sometimes spamd either never reads data from a

2985 PH/40 The value set for $authenticated_id in an authenticator may not contain
2986 binary zeroes or newlines because the value is written to log lines and

2988 the string_printing() function so that such characters are converted to
2989 printable escape sequences.
2991 PH/41 $message_linecount is a new variable that contains the total number of
2992 lines in the message. Compare $body_linecount, which is the count for the
2995 PH/42 Exim no longer gives details of delivery errors for specific addresses in

3033 A note about Exim versions 4.44 and 4.50
3034 ----------------------------------------
3036 Exim 4.50 was meant to be the next release after 4.43. It contains a lot of
3037 changes of various kinds. As a consequence, a big documentation update was
3038 needed. This delayed the release for rather longer than seemed good, especially
3039 in the light of a couple of (minor) security issues. Therefore, the changes
3040 that fixed bugs were backported into 4.43, to create a 4.44 maintenance
3041 release. So 4.44 and 4.50 are in effect two different branches that both start
3044 I have left the 4.50 change log unchanged; it contains all the changes since
3045 4.43. The change log for 4.44 is below; many of its items are identical to
3046 those for 4.50. This seems to be the most sensible way to preserve the
3047 historical information.
3053 1. Minor wording change to the doc/README.SIEVE file.
3055 2. Change 4.43/35 introduced a bug: if quota_filecount was set, the
3056 computation of the current number of files was incorrect.
3058 3. Closing a stable door: arrange to panic-die if setitimer() ever fails. The
3059 bug fixed in 4.43/37 would have been diagnosed quickly if this had been in
3062 4. Give more explanation in the error message when the command for a transport

3065 5. There are several places where Exim runs a non-Exim command in a

3080 controls (e.g. 4.43/32), the checks on when to allow different forms of
3081 "control" were broken. There should now be diagnostics for all cases when a

3086 10. $recipients is now available in the predata ACL (oversight).
3088 11. Tidy the search cache before the fork to do a delivery from a message

3150 29. In an address list, if the pattern was not a regular expression, an empty
3151 subject address (from a bounce message) matched only if the pattern was an
3152 empty string. Non-empty patterns were not even tested. This was the wrong
3153 because it is perfectly reasonable to use an empty address as part of a
3154 database query. An empty address is now tested by patterns that are
3155 lookups. However, all the other forms of pattern expect the subject to
3156 contain a local part and a domain, and therefore, for them, an empty
3157 address still always fails if the pattern is not itself empty.
3159 30. Exim went into a mad DNS loop when attempting to do a callout where the
3160 host was specified on an smtp transport, and looking it up yielded more
3161 than one IP address.
3163 31. Re-factored the code for checking spool and log partition space into a
3164 function that finds that data and another that does the check. The former
3165 is then used to implement four new variables: $spool_space, $log_space,
3166 $spool_inodes, and $log_inodes.
3168 32. The RFC2047 encoding function was originally intended for short strings
3169 such as real names; it was not keeping to the 75-character limit for
3170 encoded words that the RFC imposes. It now respects the limit, and
3171 generates multiple encoded words if necessary. To be on the safe side, I
3172 have increased the buffer size for the ${rfc2047: expansion operator from
3175 33. It is now permitted to omit both strings after an "if" condition; if the
3176 condition is true, the result is "true". As before, when the second string
3177 is omitted, a false condition yields an empty string. This makes it less
3178 cumbersome to write custom ACL and router conditions.
3180 34. Failure to deliver a bounce message always caused it to be frozen, even if
3181 there was an errors_to setting on the router. The errors_to setting is now
3184 35. If an IPv6 address is given for -bh or -bhc, it is now converted to the
3185 canonical form (fully expanded) before being placed in

3188 36. The table in the code that translates DNS record types into text (T_A to
3189 "A" for instance) was missing entries for NS and CNAME. It is just possible
3190 that this could have caused confusion if both these types were looked up
3191 for the same domain, because the text type is used as part of Exim's
3192 per-process caching. But the chance of anyone hitting this buglet seems
3195 37. The dnsdb lookup has been extended in a number of ways.
3197 (1) There is a new type, "zns", which walks up the domain tree until it
3198 finds some nameserver records. It should be used with care.
3200 (2) There is a new type, "mxh", which is like "mx" except that it returns
3201 just the host names, not the priorities.
3203 (3) It is now possible to give a list of domains (or IP addresses) to be
3204 looked up. The behaviour when one of the lookups defers can be
3205 controlled by a keyword.
3207 (4) It is now possible to specify the separator character for use when
3208 multiple records are returned.
3210 38. The dnslists ACL condition has been extended: it is now possible to supply
3211 a list of IP addresses and/or domains to be looked up in a particular DNS
3214 39. Added log_selector=+queue_time_overall.
3216 40. When running the queue in the test harness, wait just a tad after forking a
3217 delivery process, to get repeatability of debugging output.

3238 47. exim_tidydb, when checking for the continued existence of a message for
3239 which it has found a message-specific retry record, was not finding
3240 messages that were in split spool directories. Consequently, it was
3241 deleting retry records that should have stayed in existence.
3243 48. Steve fixed some bugs in eximstats.
3245 49. The SPA authentication driver was not abandoning authentication and moving
3246 on to the next authenticator when an expansion was forced to fail,
3247 contradicting the general specification for all authenticators. Instead it
3248 was generating a temporary error. It now behaves as specified.
3250 50. The default ordering of permitted cipher suites for GnuTLS was pessimal
3251 (the order specifies the preference for clients). The order is now AES256,
3252 AES128, 3DES, ARCFOUR128.
3254 51. Small patch to Sieve code - explicitly set From: when generating an
3257 52. Exim crashed if a remote delivery caused a very long error message to be
3258 recorded - for instance if somebody sent an entire SpamAssassin report back

3281 Later: it seems that not all versions of LDAP support LDAP_RES_SEARCH_
3282 REFERENCE, so I have modified the code to exclude the patch when that macro
3285 55. Some experimental protocols are using DNS PTR records for new purposes. The
3286 keys for these records are domain names, not reversed IP addresses. The
3287 dnsdb PTR lookup now tests whether its key is an IP address. If not, it
3288 leaves it alone. Component reversal etc. now happens only for IP addresses.
3291 56. Improve error message when ldap_search() fails in OpenLDAP or Solaris LDAP.
3293 57. Double the size of the debug message buffer (to 2048) so that more of very

3296 58. The exicyclog utility now does better if the number of log files to keep

3305 60. The host_aton() function is supposed to be passed a string that is known
3306 to be a valid IP address. However, in the case of IPv6 addresses, it was
3307 not checking this. This is a hostage to fortune. Exim now panics and dies
3308 if the condition is not met. A case was found where this could be provoked
3309 from a dnsdb PTR lookup with an IPv6 address that had more than 8
3310 components; fortuitously, this particular loophole had already been fixed
3311 by change 4.50/55 above.
3313 If there are any other similar loopholes, the new check in host_aton()
3314 itself should stop them being exploited. The report I received stated that
3315 data on the command line could provoke the exploit when Exim was running as
3316 exim, but did not say which command line option was involved. All I could
3317 find was the use of -be with a bad dnsdb PTR lookup, and in that case it is
3318 running as the user.
3321 61. There was a buffer overflow vulnerability in the SPA authentication code
3322 (which came originally from the Samba project). I have added a test to the
3323 spa_base64_to_bits() function which I hope fixes it.
3326 62. Configuration update for GNU/Hurd and variations. Updated Makefile-GNU and
3327 os.h-GNU, and added configuration files for GNUkFreeBSD and GNUkNetBSD.
3329 63. The daemon start-up calls getloadavg() while still root for those OS that
3330 need the first call to be done as root, but it missed one case: when
3331 deliver_queue_load_max is set with deliver_drop_privilege. This is
3332 necessary for the benefit of the queue runner, because there is no re-exec
3333 when deliver_drop_privilege is set.
3335 64. A call to exiwhat cut short delays set up by "delay" modifiers in ACLs.

3338 65. Caching of lookup data for "hosts =" ACL conditions, when a named host list
3339 was in use, was not putting the data itself into the right store pool;

3346 67. The string_is_ip_address() function returns 0, 4, or 6, for "no an IP

3348 the function were treating the return as a boolean value, which happened to
3349 work because 0=false and not-0=true, but is not correct code.
3351 68. The host_aton() function was not handling scoped IPv6 addresses (those
3352 with, for example, "%eth0" on the end) correctly.
3354 69. Fixed some compiler warnings in acl.c for the bitmaps specified with
3355 negated items (that is, ~something) in unsigned ints. Some compilers

3358 70. If an address verification called from an ACL failed, and did not produce a
3359 user-specific message (i.e. there was only a "system" message), nothing was

3364 session; change 4.31/43 added the unwanted input to the log line - except
3365 that it did not do this in the start of session case. It now does.
3367 72. After a timeout in a callout SMTP session, Exim still sent a QUIT command.
3368 This is wrong and can cause the other end to generate a synchronization
3369 error if it is another Exim or anything else that does the synchronization

3504 19. Allow an empty sender to be matched against a lookup in an address list.
3505 Previously the only cases considered were a regular expression, or an
3508 20. Exim went into a mad DNS lookup loop when doing a callout where the
3509 host was specified on the transport, if the DNS lookup yielded more than
3512 21. The RFC2047 encoding function was originally intended for short strings
3513 such as real names; it was not keeping to the 75-character limit for
3514 encoded words that the RFC imposes. It now respects the limit, and
3515 generates multiple encoded words if necessary. To be on the safe side, I

3553 31. The default ordering of permitted cipher suites for GnuTLS was pessimal
3554 (the order specifies the preference for clients). The order is now AES256,

3557 31. Small patch to Sieve code - explicitly set From: when generating an
3560 32. Exim crashed if a remote delivery caused a very long error message to be
3561 recorded - for instance if somebody sent an entire SpamAssassin report back
3562 as a large number of 550 error lines. This bug was coincidentally fixed by
3563 increasing the size of one of Exim's internal buffers (big_buffer) that
3564 happened as part of the Exiscan merge. However, to be on the safe side, I
3565 have made the code more robust (and fixed the comments that describe what
3568 33. Some experimental protocols are using DNS PTR records for new purposes. The
3569 keys for these records are domain names, not reversed IP addresses. The
3570 dnsdb PTR lookup now tests whether its key is an IP address. If not, it
3571 leaves it alone. Component reversal etc. now happens only for IP addresses.
3574 34. The host_aton() function is supposed to be passed a string that is known
3575 to be a valid IP address. However, in the case of IPv6 addresses, it was
3576 not checking this. This is a hostage to fortune. Exim now panics and dies
3577 if the condition is not met. A case was found where this could be provoked
3578 from a dnsdb PTR lookup with an IPv6 address that had more than 8
3579 components; fortuitously, this particular loophole had already been fixed
3580 by change 4.50/55 or 4.44/33 above.
3582 If there are any other similar loopholes, the new check in host_aton()
3583 itself should stop them being exploited. The report I received stated that
3584 data on the command line could provoke the exploit when Exim was running as
3585 exim, but did not say which command line option was involved. All I could
3586 find was the use of -be with a bad dnsdb PTR lookup, and in that case it is
3587 running as the user.
3590 35. There was a buffer overflow vulnerability in the SPA authentication code
3591 (which came originally from the Samba project). I have added a test to the
3592 spa_base64_to_bits() function which I hope fixes it.
3595 36. The daemon start-up calls getloadavg() while still root for those OS that
3596 need the first call to be done as root, but it missed one case: when
3597 deliver_queue_load_max is set with deliver_drop_privilege. This is
3598 necessary for the benefit of the queue runner, because there is no re-exec
3599 when deliver_drop_privilege is set.
3601 37. Caching of lookup data for "hosts =" ACL conditions, when a named host list
3602 was in use, was not putting the data itself into the right store pool;
3603 consequently, it could be overwritten for a subsequent message in the same
3604 SMTP connection. (Fix 4.40/11 dealt with the non-cache case, but overlooked
3607 38. Sometimes the final signoff response after QUIT could fail to get
3608 transmitted in the non-TLS case. Testing !tls_active instead of tls_active
3609 < 0 before doing a fflush(). This bug looks as though it goes back to the
3610 introduction of TLS in release 3.20, but "sometimes" must have been rare
3611 because the tests only now provoked it.
3617 1. Fixed a longstanding but relatively impotent bug: a long time ago, before
3618 PIPELINING, the function smtp_write_command() used to return TRUE or FALSE.
3619 Now it returns an integer. A number of calls were still expecting a T/F
3620 return. Fortuitously, in all cases, the tests worked in OK situations,
3621 which is the norm. However, things would have gone wrong on any write
3622 failures on the smtp file descriptor. This function is used when sending
3623 messages over SMTP and also when doing verify callouts.
3625 2. When Exim is called to do synchronous delivery of a locally submitted
3626 message (the -odf or -odi options), it no longer closes stderr before doing
3629 3. Implemented the mua_wrapper option.
3631 4. Implemented mx_fail_domains and srv_fail_domains for the dnslookup router.
3633 5. Implemented the functions header_remove(), header_testname(),
3634 header_add_at_position(), and receive_remove_recipient(), and exported them

3667 after another failure, the ultimate address timeout, which should have then
3668 bounced the address, did not kick in. This was a "< instead of <=" error;
3669 in most cases the first failure would have been in the next clock tick
3670 after the received time, and all would be well.
3672 15. The special items beginning with @ in domain lists (e.g. @mx_any) were not
3673 being recognized when the domain list was tested by the match_domain
3674 condition in an expansion string.
3676 16. Added the ${str2b64: operator.
3678 17. Exim was always calling setrlimit() to set a large limit for the number of
3679 processes, without checking whether the existing limit was already
3680 adequate. (It did check for the limit on file descriptors.) Furthermore,
3681 errors from getrlimit() and setrlimit() were being ignored. Now they are
3682 logged to the main and panic logs, but Exim does carry on, to try to do its
3683 job under whatever limits there are.
3685 18. Imported PCRE 5.0.
3687 19. Trivial typo in log message " temporarily refused connection" (the leading
3690 20. If the log selector return_path_on_delivery was set and an address was
3691 redirected to /dev/null, the delivery process crashed because it assumed
3692 that a return path would always be set for a "successful" delivery. In this
3693 case, the whole delivery is bypassed as an optimization, and therefore no
3696 21. Internal re-arrangement: the function for sending a challenge and reading
3697 a response while authentication was assuming a zero-terminated challenge
3698 string. It's now changed to take a pointer and a length, to allow for

3717 definitions to OS/Makefile-SCO and OS/Makefile-SCO_SV that put basename,
3718 chown and chgrp in /bin and hostname in /usr/bin.
3720 28. Exim was keeping the "process log" file open after each use, just as it
3721 does for the main log. This opens the possibility of it remaining open for
3722 long periods when the USR1 signal hits a daemon. Occasional processlog
3723 errors were reported, that could have been caused by this. Anyway, it seems
3724 much more sensible not to leave this file open at all, so that is what now
3727 29. The long-running daemon process does not normally write to the log once it
3728 has entered its main loop, and it closes the log before doing so. This is
3729 so that log files can straightforwardly be renamed and moved. However,
3730 there are a couple of unusual error situations where the daemon does write
3731 log entries, and I had neglected to close the log afterwards.
3733 30. The text of an SMTP error response that was received during a remote
3734 delivery was being truncated at 512 bytes. This is too short for some of
3735 the long messages that one sometimes sees. I've increased the limit to
3738 31. It is now possible to make retry rules that apply only when a message has a
3739 specific sender, in particular, an empty sender.
3741 32. Added "control = enforce_sync" and "control = no_enforce_sync". This makes
3742 it possible to be selective about when SMTP synchronization is enforced.
3744 33. Added "control = caseful_local_part" and "control = "caselower_local_part".

3757 37. There was a bug in the logic of the code that waits for the clock to tick
3758 in the case where the clock went backwards by a substantial amount such
3759 that the microsecond fraction of "now" was more than the microsecond
3760 fraction of "then" (but the whole seconds number was less).
3762 38. Added support for the libradius Radius client library this is found on
3763 FreeBSD (previously only the radiusclient library was supported).
3769 1. When certain lookups returned multiple values in the form name=value, the
3770 quoting of the values was not always being done properly. Specifically:
3771 (a) If the value started with a double quote, but contained no whitespace,
3773 (b) If the value contained whitespace other than a space character (i.e.
3774 tabs or newlines or carriage returns) it was not quoted.
3775 This fix has been applied to the mysql and pgsql lookups by writing a
3776 separate quoting function and calling it from the lookup code. The fix
3777 should probably also be applied to nisplus, ibase and oracle lookups, but
3778 since I cannot test any of those, I have not disturbed their existing code.
3780 2. A hit in the callout cache for a specific address caused a log line with no
3781 reason for rejecting RCPT. Now it says "Previous (cached) callout
3782 verification failure".
3784 3. There was an off-by-one bug in the queryprogram router. An over-long
3785 return line was truncated at 256 instead of 255 characters, thereby
3786 overflowing its buffer with the terminating zero. As well as fixing this, I
3787 have increased the buffer size to 1024 (and made a note to document this).
3789 4. If an interrupt, such as the USR1 signal that is send by exiwhat, arrives
3790 when Exim is waiting for an SMTP response from a remote server, Exim
3791 restarts its select() call on the socket, thereby resetting its timeout.
3792 This is not a problem when such interrupts are rare. Somebody set up a cron
3793 job to run exiwhat every 2 minutes, which is less than the normal select()
3794 timeout (5 or 10 minutes). This meant that the select() timeout never
3795 kicked in because it was always reset. I have fixed this by comparing the
3796 time when an interrupt arrives with the time at the start of the first call
3797 to select(). If more time than the timeout has elapsed, the interrupt is
3798 treated as a timeout.
3800 5. Some internal re-factoring in preparation for the addition of Sieve
3801 extensions (by MH). In particular, the "personal" test is moved to a
3802 separate function, and given an option for scanning Cc: and Bcc: (which is
3803 not set for Exim filters).
3805 6. When Exim created an email address using the login of the caller as the
3806 local part (e.g. when creating a From: or Sender: header line), it was not
3807 quoting the local part when it contained special characters such as @.
3809 7. Installed new OpenBSD configuration files.
3811 8. Reworded some messages for syntax errors in "and" and "or" conditions to
3812 try to make them clearer.
3814 9. Callout options, other than the timeout value, were being ignored when
3815 verifying sender addresses in header lines. For example, when using
3817 verify = header_sender/callout=no_cache
3819 the cache was (incorrectly) being used.
3821 10. Added a missing instance of ${EXE} to the exim_install script; this affects
3822 only the Cygwin environment.
3824 11. When return_path_on_delivery was set as a log selector, if different remote
3825 addresses in the same message used different return paths and parallel
3826 remote delivery occurred, the wrong values would sometimes be logged.
3827 (Whenever a remote delivery process finished, the return path value from
3828 the most recently started remote delivery process was logged.)
3830 12. RFC 3848 specifies standard names for the "with" phrase in Received: header
3831 lines when AUTH and/or TLS are in use. This is the "received protocol"
3832 field. Exim used to use "asmtp" for authenticated SMTP, without any
3833 indication (in the protocol name) for TLS use. Now it follows the RFC and
3834 uses "esmtpa" if the connection is authenticated, "esmtps" if it is
3835 encrypted, and "esmtpsa" if it is both encrypted and authenticated. These
3836 names appear in log lines as well as in Received: header lines.
3838 13. Installed MH's patches for Sieve to add the "copy" and "vacation"
3839 extensions, and comparison tests, and to fix some bugs.
3841 14. Changes to the "personal" filter test:
3843 (1) The test was buggy in that it was just doing the equivalent of
3844 "contains" tests on header lines. For example, if a user's address was
3845 anne@some.where, the "personal" test would incorrectly be true for
3847 To: susanne@some.where
3849 This test is now done by extracting each address from the header in turn,
3850 and checking the entire address. Other tests that are part of "personal"
3851 are now done using regular expressions (for example, to check local parts
3852 of addresses in From: header lines).
3854 (2) The list of non-personal local parts in From: addresses has been
3855 extended to include "listserv", "majordomo", "*-request", and "owner-*",
3856 taken from the Sieve specification recommendations.
3858 (3) If the message contains any header line starting with "List-" it is
3859 treated as non-personal.
3861 (4) The test for "circular" in the Subject: header line has been removed
3862 because it now seems ill-conceived.
3864 15. Minor typos in src/EDITME comments corrected.
3866 16. Installed latest exipick from John Jetmore.
3868 17. If headers_add on a router specified a text string that was too long for
3869 string_sprintf() - that is, longer than 8192 bytes - Exim panicked. The use
3870 of string_sprintf() is now avoided.
3872 18. $message_body_size was not set (it was always zero) when running the DATA
3873 ACL and the local_scan() function.
3875 19. For the "mail" command in an Exim filter, no default was being set for
3876 the once_repeat time, causing a random time value to be used if "once" was
3877 specified. (If the value happened to be <= 0, no repeat happened.) The
3878 default is now 0s, meaning "never repeat". The "vacation" command was OK
3879 (its default is 7d). It's somewhat surprising nobody ever noticed this bug
3880 (I found it when inspecting the code).
3882 20. There is now an overall timeout for performing a callout verification. It
3883 defaults to 4 times the callout timeout, which applies to individual SMTP
3884 commands during the callout. The overall timeout applies when there is more
3885 than one host that can be tried. The timeout is checked before trying the
3886 next host. This prevents very long delays if there are a large number of
3887 hosts and all are timing out (e.g. when the network connections are timing
3888 out). The value of the overall timeout can be changed by specifying an
3889 additional sub-option for "callout", called "maxwait". For example:
3891 verify = sender/callout=5s,maxwait=20s
3893 21. Add O_APPEND to the open() call for maildirsize files (Exim already seeks
3894 to the end before writing, but this should make it even safer).
3896 22. Exim was forgetting that it had advertised PIPELINING for the second and
3897 subsequent messages on an SMTP connection. It was also not resetting its
3898 memory on STARTTLS and an internal HELO.
3900 23. When Exim logs an SMTP synchronization error within a session, it now
3901 records whether PIPELINING has been advertised or not.
3903 24. Added 3 instances of "(long int)" casts to time_t variables that were being
3904 formatted using %ld, because on OpenBSD (and perhaps others), time_t is int
3905 rather than long int.

3915 1. A reorganization of the code in order to implement 4.40/8 caused a daemon
3916 crash if the getsockname() call failed; this can happen if a connection is
3917 closed very soon after it is established. The problem was simply in the
3918 order in which certain operations were done, causing Exim to try to write
3919 to the SMTP stream before it had set up the file descriptor. The bug has
3920 been fixed by making things happen in the correct order.
3926 1. If "drop" was used in a DATA ACL, the SMTP output buffer was not flushed
3927 before the connection was closed, thus losing the rejection response.
3929 2. Commented out the definition of SOCKLEN_T in os.h-SunOS5. It is needed for
3930 some early Solaris releases, but causes trouble in current releases where
3931 socklen_t is defined.
3933 3. When std{in,out,err} are closed, re-open them to /dev/null so that they
3936 4. Minor refactoring of os.c-Linux to avoid compiler warning when IPv6 is not
3939 5. Refactoring in expand.c to improve memory usage. Pre-allocate a block so
3940 that releasing the top of it at the end releases what was used for sub-
3941 expansions (unless the block got too big). However, discard this block if
3942 the first thing is a variable or header, so that we can use its block when
3943 it is dynamic (useful for very large $message_headers, for example).
3945 6. Lookups now cache *every* query, not just the most recent. A new, separate
3946 store pool is used for this. It can be recovered when all lookup caches are
3947 flushed. Lookups now release memory at the end of their result strings.
3948 This has involved some general refactoring of the lookup sources.
3950 7. Some code has been added to the store_xxx() functions to reduce the amount
3951 of flapping under certain conditions.
3953 8. log_incoming_interface used to affect only the <= reception log lines. Now
3954 it causes the local interface and port to be added to several more SMTP log
3955 lines, for example "SMTP connection from", and rejection lines.
3957 9. The Sieve author supplied some patches for the doc/README.SIEVE file.
3959 10. Added a conditional definition of _BSD_SOCKLEN_T to os.h-Darwin.
3961 11. If $host_data was set by virtue of a hosts lookup in an ACL, its value
3962 could be overwritten at the end of the current message (or the start of a
3963 new message if it was set in a HELO ACL). The value is now preserved for
3964 the duration of the SMTP connection.
3966 12. If a transport had a headers_rewrite setting, and a matching header line
3967 contained an unqualified address, that address was qualified, even if it
3968 did not match any rewriting rules. The underlying bug was that the values
3969 of the flags that permit the existence of unqualified sender and recipient
3970 addresses in header lines (set by {sender,recipient}_unqualified_hosts for
3971 non-local messages, and by -bnq for local messages) were not being
3972 preserved with the message after it was received.
3974 13. When Exim was logging an SMTP synchronization error, it could sometimes log
3975 "next input=" as part of the text comprising the host identity instead of
3976 the correct text. The code was using the same buffer for two different
3977 strings. However, depending on which order the printing function evaluated
3978 its arguments, the bug did not always show up. Under Linux, for example, my
3979 test suite worked just fine.
3981 14. Exigrep contained a use of Perl's "our" scoping after change 4.31/70. This
3982 doesn't work with some older versions of Perl. It has been changed to "my",
3983 which in any case is probably the better facility to use.
3985 15. A really picky compiler found some instances of statements for creating
3986 error messages that either had too many or two few arguments for the format
3989 16. The size of the buffer for calls to the DNS resolver has been increased
3990 from 1024 to 2048. A larger buffer is needed when performing PTR lookups
3991 for addresses that have a lot of PTR records. This alleviates a problem; it
3992 does not fully solve it.
3994 17. A dnsdb lookup for PTR records that receives more data than will fit in the
3995 buffer now truncates the list and logs the incident, which is the same
3996 action as happens when Exim is looking up a host name and its aliases.
3997 Previously in this situation something unpredictable would happen;
3998 sometimes it was "internal error: store_reset failed".
4000 18. If a server dropped the connection unexpectedly when an Exim client was
4001 using GnuTLS and trying to read a response, the client delivery process
4002 crashed while trying to generate an error log message.
4004 19. If a "warn" verb in an ACL added multiple headers to a message in a single
4005 string, for example:
4007 warn message = H1: something\nH2: something
4009 the text was added as a single header line from Exim's point of view
4010 though it ended up OK in the delivered message. However, searching for the
4011 second and subsequent header lines using $h_h2: did not work. This has been
4012 fixed. Similarly, if a system filter added multiple headers in this way,
4013 the routers could not see them.
4015 20. Expanded the error message when iplsearch is called with an invalid key to
4016 suggest using net-iplsearch in a host list.
4018 21. When running tests using -bh, any delays imposed by "delay" modifiers in
4019 ACLs are no longer actually imposed (and a message to that effect is
4022 22. If a "gecos" field in a passwd entry contained escaped characters, in
4023 particular, if it contained a \" sequence, Exim got it wrong when building
4024 a From: or a Sender: header from that name. A second bug also caused
4025 incorrect handling when an unquoted " was present following a character

4028 23. "{crypt}" as a password encryption mechanism for a "crypteq" expansion item
4029 was not being matched caselessly.
4031 24. Arranged for all hyphens in the exim.8 source to be escaped with

4035 properly. Recipient callout cache records were still being keyed to include

4081 overflow, and (when I tested it) crashed. This was caused by some obsolete
4082 code that should have been removed. The fix is to remove it!
4084 3. When running in the test harness, delay a bit after writing a bounce
4085 message to get a bit more predictability in the log output.
4087 4. Added a call to search_tidyup() just before forking a reception process. In
4088 theory, someone could use a lookup in the expansion of smtp_accept_max_
4089 per_host which, without the tidyup, could leave open a database connection.
4091 5. Added the variables $recipient_data and $sender_data which get set from a
4092 lookup success in an ACL "recipients" or "senders" condition, or a router

4098 7. Change 4.31/66 (moving the time when the Received: is generated) caused
4099 problems for message scanning, either using a data ACL, or using
4100 local_scan() because the Received: header was not generated till after they
4101 were called (in order to set the time as the time of reception completion).
4102 I have revised the way this works. The header is now generated after the
4103 body is received, but before the ACL or local_scan() are called. After they
4104 are run, the timestamp in the header is updated.
4110 1. Change 4.24/6 introduced a bug because the SIGALRM handler was disabled
4111 before starting a queue runner without re-exec. This happened only when
4112 deliver_drop_privilege was set or when the Exim user was set to root. The
4113 effect of the bug was that timeouts during subsequent deliveries caused
4114 crashes instead of being properly handled. The handler is now left at its
4115 default (and expected) setting.
4117 2. The other case in which a daemon avoids a re-exec is to deliver an incoming
4118 message, again when deliver_drop_privilege is set or Exim is run as root.
4119 The bug described in (1) was not present in this case, but the tidying up
4120 of the other signals was missing. I have made the two cases consistent.
4122 3. The ignore_target_hosts setting on a manualroute router was being ignored
4123 for hosts that were looked up using the /MX notation.
4125 4. Added /ignore=<ip list> feature to @mx_any, @mx_primary, and @mx_secondary
4128 5. Change 4.31/55 was buggy, and broke when there was a rewriting rule that
4129 operated on the sender address. After changing the $sender_address to <>
4130 for the sender address verify, Exim was re-instated it as the original
4131 (before rewriting) address, but remembering that it had rewritten it, so it
4132 wasn't rewriting it again. This bug also had the effect of breaking the
4133 sender address verification caching when the sender address was rewritten.
4135 6. The ignore_target_hosts option was being ignored by the ipliteral router.
4136 This has been changed so that if the ip literal address matches
4137 ignore_target_hosts, the router declines.
4139 7. Added expansion conditions match_domain, match_address, and match_local_
4140 part (NOT match_host).
4142 8. The placeholder for the Received: header didn't have a length field set.
4144 9. Added code to Exim itself and to exim_lock to test for a specific race
4145 condition that could lead to file corruption when using MBX delivery. The
4146 issue is with the lockfile that is created in /tmp. If this file is removed
4147 after a process has opened it but before that process has acquired a lock,
4148 there is the potential for a second process to recreate the file and also
4149 acquire a lock. This could lead to two Exim processes writing to the file
4150 at the same time. The added code performs the same test as UW imapd; it
4151 checks after acquiring the lock that its file descriptor still refers to
4152 the same named file.
4154 10. The buffer for building added header lines was of fixed size, 8192 bytes.
4155 It is now parameterized by HEADER_ADD_BUFFER_SIZE and this can be adjusted
4158 11. Added the smtp_active_hostname option. If used, this will typically be made
4159 to depend on the incoming interface address. Because $interface_address is
4160 not set up until the daemon has forked a reception process, error responses
4161 that can happen earlier (such as "too many connections") no longer contain
4164 12. If an expansion in a condition on a "warn" statement fails because a lookup
4165 defers, the "warn" statement is abandoned, and the next ACL statement is
4166 processed. Previously this caused the whole ACL to be aborted.
4168 13. Added the iplsearch lookup type.
4170 14. Added ident_timeout as a log selector.
4172 15. Added tls_certificate_verified as a log selector.
4174 16. Added a global option tls_require_ciphers (compare the smtp transport
4175 option of the same name). This controls incoming TLS connections.
4177 17. I finally figured out how to make tls_require_ciphers do a similar thing
4178 in GNUtls to what it does in OpenSSL, that is, set up an appropriate list
4179 before starting the TLS session.
4181 18. Tabs are now shown as \t in -bP output.
4183 19. If the log selector return_path_on_delivery was set, Exim crashed when
4184 bouncing a message because it had too many Received: header lines.
4186 20. If two routers both had headers_remove settings, and the first one included
4187 a superfluous trailing colon, the final name in the first list and the
4188 first name in the second list were incorrectly joined into one item (with a
4189 colon in the middle).
4195 1. Added -C and -D options to the exinext utility, mainly to make it easier
4196 to include in the automated testing, but these could be helpful when
4197 multiple configurations are in use.
4199 2. The exinext utility was not formatting the output nicely when there was
4200 an alternate port involved in the retry record key, nor when there was a
4201 message id as well (for retries that were specific to a specific message
4202 and a specific host). It was also confused by IPv6 addresses, because of
4203 the additional colons they contain. I have fixed the IPv4 problem, and
4204 patched it up to do a reasonable job for IPv6.
4206 3. When there is an error after a MAIL, RCPT, or DATA SMTP command during
4207 delivery, the log line now contains "pipelined" if PIPELINING was used.
4209 4. An SMTP transport process used to panic and die if the bind() call to set
4210 an explicit outgoing interface failed. This has been changed; it is now
4211 treated in the same way as a connect() failure.
4213 5. A reference to $sender_host_name in the part of a conditional expansion
4214 that was being skipped was still causing a DNS lookup. This no longer
4217 6. The def: expansion condition was not recognizing references to header lines
4218 that used bh_ and bheader_.
4220 7. Added the _cache feature to named lists.
4222 8. The code for checking quota_filecount in the appendfile transport was
4223 allowing one more file than it should have been.
4225 9. For compatibility with Sendmail, the command line option
4233 and sets the incoming protocol and host name (for trusted callers). The
4234 host name and its colon can be omitted when only the protocol is to be set.
4235 Note the Exim already has two private options, -pd and -ps, that refer to
4236 embedded Perl. It is therefore impossible to set a protocol value of "d" or
4237 "s", but I don't think that's a major issue.
4239 10. A number of refactoring changes to the code, none of which should affect
4242 (a) The number of logging options was getting close to filling up the
4243 32-bit word that was used as a bit map. I have split them into two classes:
4244 those that are passed in the argument to log_write(), and those that are
4245 only ever tested independently outside of that function. These are now in
4246 separate 32-bit words, so there is plenty of room for expansion again.
4247 There is no change in the user interface or the logging behaviour.
4249 (b) When building, for example, log lines, the code previously used a
4250 macro that called string_cat() twice, in order to add two strings. This is
4251 not really sufficiently general. Furthermore, there was one instance where
4252 it was actually wrong because one of the argument was used twice, and in
4253 one call a function was used. (As it happened, calling the function twice
4254 did not affect the overall behaviour.) The macro has been replaced by a
4255 function that can join an arbitrary number of extra strings onto a growing
4258 (c) The code for expansion conditions now uses a table and a binary chop
4259 instead of a serial search (which was left over from when there were very
4260 few conditions). Also, it now recognizes conditions like "pam" even when
4261 the relevant support is not compiled in: a suitably worded error message is
4262 given if an attempt is made to use such a condition.
4264 11. Added ${time_interval:xxxxx}.
4266 12. A bug was causing one of the ddress fields not to be passed back correctly
4267 from remote delivery subprocesses. The field in question was not being
4268 subsequently used, so this caused to problems in practice.
4270 13. Added new log selectors queue_time and deliver_time.
4272 14. Might have fixed a bug in maildirsizefile handling that threw up
4273 "unexpected character" debug warnings, and recalculated the data
4274 unnecessarily. In any case, I expanded the warning message to give more
4277 15. Added the message "Restricted characters in address" to the statements in
4278 the default ACL that block characters like @ and % in local parts.
4280 16. Change 71 for release 4.31 proved to be much less benign that I imagined.
4281 Three changes have been made:
4283 (a) There was a serious bug; a negative response to MAIL caused the whole
4284 recipient domain to be cached as invalid, thereby blocking all messages
4285 to all local parts at the same domain, from all senders. This bug has
4286 been fixed. The domain is no longer cached after a negative response to
4287 MAIL if the sender used is not empty.
4289 (b) The default behaviour of using MAIL FROM:<> for recipient callouts has
4292 (c) A new callout option, "use_sender" has been added for people who want
4293 the modified behaviour.
4299 1. Removed "EXTRALIBS=-lwrap" from OS/Makefile-Unixware7 on the advice of
4302 2. Removed "LIBS = -lresolv" from OS/Makefile-Darwin as it is not needed, and
4303 indeed breaks things for older releases.
4305 3. Added additional logging to the case where there is a problem reading data
4306 from a filter that is running in a subprocess using a pipe, in order to
4307 try to track down a specific problem.
4309 4. Testing facility fudge: when running in the test harness and attempting
4310 to connect to 10.x.x.x (expecting a connection timeout) I'm now sometimes
4311 getting "No route to host". Convert this to a timeout.
4313 5. Define ICONV_ARG2_TYPE as "char **" for Unixware7 to avoid compiler
4316 6. Some OS don't have socklen_t but use size_t instead. This affects the
4317 fifth argument of getsockopt() amongst other things. This is now
4318 configurable by a macro called SOCKLEN_T which defaults to socklen_t, but
4319 can be set for individual OS. I have set it for SunOS5, OSF1, and
4320 Unixware7. Current versions of SunOS5 (aka Solaris) do have socklen_t, but
4321 some earlier ones do not.
4323 7. Change 4.30/15 was not doing the test caselessly.
4325 8. The standard form for an IPv6 address literal was being rejected by address
4326 parsing in, for example, MAIL and RCPT commands. An example of this kind of
4327 address is [IPv6:2002:c1ed:8229:10:202:2dff:fe07:a42a]. Exim now accepts
4328 this, as well as the form without the "IPv6" on the front (but only when
4329 address literals are enabled, of course).
4331 9. Added some casts to avoid compiler warnings in OS/os.c-Linux.
4333 10. Exim crashed if a message with an empty sender address specified by -f
4334 encountered a router with an errors_to setting. This could be provoked only
4335 by a command such as
4339 where an empty string was supplied; "<>" did not hit this bug.
4341 11. Installed PCRE release 4.5.
4343 12. If EHLO/HELO was rejected by an ACL, the value of $sender_helo_name
4344 remained set. It is now erased.
4346 13. exiqgrep wasn't working on MacOS X because it didn't correctly compute
4347 times from message ids (which are base 36 rather than the normal 62).
4349 14. "Expected" SMTP protocol errors that can arise when PIPELINING is in use
4350 were being counted as actual protocol errors, and logged if the log
4351 selector +smtp_protocol_error was set. One cannot be perfect in this test,
4352 but now, if PIPELINING has been advertised, RCPT following a rejected MAIL,
4353 and DATA following a set of rejected RCPTs do not count as protocol errors.
4354 In other words, Exim assumes they were pipelined, though this may not
4355 actually be the case. Of course, in all cases the client gets an
4356 appropriate error code.
4358 15. If a lookup fails in an ACL condition, a message about the failure may
4359 be available; it is used if testing the ACL cannot continue, because most
4360 such messages specify what the cause of the deferral is. However, some
4361 messages (e.g. "MYSQL: no data found") do not cause a defer. There was bug
4362 that caused an old message to be retained and used if a later statement
4363 caused a defer, replacing the real cause of the deferral.
4365 16. If an IP address had so many PTR records that the DNS lookup buffer
4366 was not large enough to hold them, Exim could crash while trying to process
4367 the truncated data. It now detects and logs this case.
4369 17. Further to 4.21/58, another change has been made: if (and only if) the
4370 first line of a message (the first header line) ends with CRLF, a bare LF
4371 in a subsequent header line has a space inserted after it, so as not to
4372 terminate the header.
4374 18. Refactoring: tidied an ugly bit of code in appendfile that copied data
4375 unnecessarily, used atoi() instead of strtol(), and didn't check the
4376 termination when getting file sizes from file names by regex.
4378 19. Completely re-implemented the support for maildirsize files, in the light
4379 of a number of problems with the previous contributed implementation
4380 (4.30/29). In particular:
4382 . If the quota is zero, the maildirsize file is maintained, but no quota is
4385 . If the maildir directory does not exist, it is created before any attempt
4386 to write a maildirsize file.
4388 . The quota value in the file is just a cache; if the quota is changed in
4389 the transport, the new value overrides.
4391 . A regular expression is available for excluding directories from the
4394 20. The autoreply transport checks the characters in options that define the
4395 message's headers; it allows continued headers, but it was checking with
4396 isspace() after an embedded newline instead of explicitly looking for a
4399 21. If all the "regular" hosts to which an address was routed had passed their
4400 expiry times, and had not reached their retry times, the address was
4401 bounced, even if fallback hosts were defined. Now Exim should go on to try
4404 22. Increased buffer sizes in the callout code from 1024 to 4096 to match the
4405 equivalent code in the SMTP transport. Some hosts send humungous responses
4406 to HELO/EHLO, more than 1024 it seems.
4408 23. Refactoring: code in filter.c used (void *) for "any old type" but this
4409 gives compiler warnings in some environments. I've now done it "properly",
4412 24. The replacement for inet_ntoa() that is used with gcc on IRIX systems
4413 (because of problems with the built-in one) was declared to return uschar *
4414 instead of char *, causing compiler failure.
4416 25. Fixed a file descriptor leak when processing alias/forward files.
4418 26. Fixed a minor format string issue in dbfn.c.
4420 27. Typo in exim.c: ("dmbnz" for "dbmnz").
4422 28. If a filter file refered to $h_xxx or $message_headers, and the headers
4423 contained RFC 2047 "words", Exim's memory could, under certain conditions,
4426 29. When a sender address is verified, it is cached, to save repeating the test
4427 when there is more than one recipient in a message. However, when the
4428 verification involves a callout, it is possible for different callout
4429 options to be set for different recipients. It is too complicated to keep
4430 track of this in the cache, so now Exim always runs a verification when a
4431 callout is required, relying on the callout cache for the optimization.
4432 The overhead is duplication of the address routing, but this should not be
4435 30. Fixed a bug in callout caching. If a RCPT command caused the sender address
4436 to be verified with callout=postmaster, and the main callout worked but the
4437 postmaster check failed, the verification correctly failed. However, if a
4438 subsequent RCPT command asked for sender verification *without* the
4439 postmaster check, incorrect caching caused this verification also to fail,
4442 31. Exim caches DNS lookup failures so as to avoid multiple timeouts; however,
4443 it was not caching the DNS options (qualify_single, search_parents) that
4444 were used when the lookup failed. A subsequent lookup with different
4445 options therefore always gave the same answer, though there were cases
4446 where it should not have. (Example: a "domains = !$mx_any" option on a
4447 dnslookup router: the "domains" option is always processed without any
4448 widening, but the router might have qualify_single set.) Now Exim uses the
4449 cached value only when the same options are set.
4451 32. Added John Jetmore's "exipick" utility to the distribution.
4453 33. GnuTLS: When an attempt to start a TLS session fails for any reason other
4454 than a timeout (e.g. a certificate is required, and is not provided), an
4455 Exim server now closes the connection immediately. Previously it waited for
4456 the client to close - but if the client is SSL, it seems that they each
4457 wait for each other, leading to a delay before one of them times out.
4459 34: GnuTLS: Updated the code to use the new GnuTLS 1.0.0 API. I have not
4460 maintained 0.8.x compatibility because I don't think many are using it, and
4461 it is clearly obsolete.
4463 35. Added TLS support for CRLs: a tls_crl global option and one for the smtp
4466 36. OpenSSL: $tls_certificate_verified was being set to 1 even if the
4467 client certificate was expired. A simple patch fixes this, though I don't
4468 understand the full logic of why the verify callback is called multiple
4471 37. OpenSSL: a patch from Robert Roselius: "Enable client-bug workaround.
4472 Versions of OpenSSL as of 0.9.6d include a 'CBC countermeasure' feature,
4473 which causes problems with some clients (such as the Certicom SSL Plus
4474 library used by Eudora). This option, SSL_OP_DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS,
4475 disables the coutermeasure allowing Eudora to connect."
4477 38. Exim was not checking that a write() to a log file succeeded. This could
4478 lead to Bad Things if a log got too big, in particular if it hit a file
4479 size limit. Exim now panics and dies if it cannot write to a log file, just
4480 as it does if it cannot open a log file.
4482 39. Modified OS/Makefile-Linux so that it now contains
4484 CFLAGS=-O -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE
4486 The two -D definitions ensure that Exim is compiled with large file
4487 support, which makes it possible to handle log files that are bigger than
4490 40. Fixed a subtle caching bug: if (in an ACL or a set of routers, for
4491 instance) a domain was checked against a named list that involved a lookup,
4492 causing $domain_data to be set, then another domain was checked against the
4493 same list, then the first domain was re-checked, the value of $domain_data
4494 after the final check could be wrong. In particular, if the second check
4495 failed, it could be set empty. This bug probably also applied to
4498 41. The strip_trailing_dot option was not being applied to the address given
4499 with the -f command-line option.
4501 42. The code for reading a message's header from the spool was incrementing
4502 $received_count, but never initializing it. This meant that the value was
4503 incorrect (doubled) while delivering a message in the same process in which
4504 it was received. In the most common configuration of Exim, this never
4505 happens - a fresh exec is done - but it can happen when
4506 deliver_drop_privilege is set.
4508 43. When Exim logs an SMTP synchronization error - client data sent too soon -
4509 it now includes up to 150 characters of the unexpected data in the log
4512 44. The exim_dbmbuild utility uses fixed size buffers for reading input lines
4513 and building data strings. The size of both of these buffers was 10 000
4514 bytes - far larger than anybody would *ever* want, thought I. Needless to
4515 say, somebody hit the limit. I have increased the maximum line length to
4516 20 000 and the maximum data length of concatenated lines to 100 000. I have
4517 also fixed two bugs, because there was no checking on these buffers. Tsk,
4518 tsk. Now exim_dbmbuild gives a message and exits with an error code if a
4519 buffer is too small.
4521 45. The exim_dbmbuild utility did not support quoted keys, as Exim does in
4522 lsearch lookups. Now it does.
4524 46. When parsing a route_list item in a manualroute router, a fixed-length
4525 buffer was used for the list of hosts. I made this 1024 bytes long,
4526 thinking that nobody would ever have a list of hosts that long. Wrong.
4527 Somebody had a whole pile of complicated expansion conditions, and the
4528 string was silently truncated, leading to an expansion error. It turns out
4529 that it is easier to change to an unlimited length (owing to other changes
4530 that have happened since this code was originally written) than to build
4531 structure for giving a limitation error. The length of the item that
4532 expands into the list of hosts is now unlimited.
4534 47. The lsearch lookup could not handle data where the length of text line was
4535 more than 4095 characters. Such lines were truncated, leading to shortened
4536 data being returned. It should now handle lines of any length.
4538 48. Minor wording revision: "cannot test xxx in yyy ACL" becomes "cannot test
4539 xxx condition in yyy ACL" (e.g. "cannot test domains condition in DATA
4542 49. Cosmetic tidy to scripts like exicyclog that are generated by globally
4543 replacing strings such as BIN_DIRECTORY in a source file: the replacement
4544 no longer happens in comment lines. A list of replacements is now placed
4545 at the head of all of the source files, except those whose only change is
4546 to replace PERL_COMMAND in the very first #! line.
4548 50. Replaced the slow insertion sort in queue.c, for sorting the list of
4549 messages on the queue, with a bottom-up merge sort, using code contributed
4550 by Michael Haardt. This should make operations like -bp somewhat faster on
4551 large queues. It won't affect queue runners, except when queue_run_in_order
4554 51. Installed eximstats 1.31 in the distribution.
4556 52. Added support for SRV lookups to the dnslookup router.
4558 53. If an ACL referred to $message_body or $message_body_end, the value was not
4559 reset for any messages that followed in the same SMTP session.
4561 54. The store-handling optimization for building very long strings was not
4562 differentiating between the different store pools. I don't think this
4563 actually made any difference in practice, but I've tidied it.
4565 55. While running the routers to verify a sender address, $sender_address
4566 was still set to the sender address. This is wrong, because when routing to
4567 send a bounce to the sender, it would be empty. Therefore, I have changed
4568 it so that, while verifying a sender address, $sender_address is set to <>.
4569 (There is no change to what happens when verifying a recipient address.)
4571 56. After finding MX (or SRV) records, Exim was doing a DNS lookup for the
4572 target A or AAAA records (if not already returned) without resetting the
4573 qualify_single or search_parents options of the DNS resolver. These are
4574 inappropriate in this case because the targets of MX and SRV records must
4575 be FQDNs. A broken DNS record could cause trouble if it happened to have a
4576 target that, when qualified, matched something in the local domain. These
4577 two options are now turned off when doing these lookups.
4579 57. It seems that at least some releases of Reiserfs (which does not have the
4580 concept of a fixed number of inodes) returns zero and not -1 for the
4581 number of available inodes. This interacted badly with check_spool_inodes,
4582 which assumed that -1 was the "no such thing" setting. What I have done is
4583 to check that the total number of inodes is greater than zero before doing
4584 the test of how many are available.
4586 58. When a "warn" ACL statement has a log_message modifier, the message is
4587 remembered, and not repeated. This is to avoid a lot of repetition when a
4588 message has many recipients that cause the same warning to be written.
4589 Howewer, Exim was preserving the list of already written lines for an
4590 entire SMTP session, which doesn't seem right. The memory is now reset if a
4591 new message is started.
4593 59. The "rewrite" debugging flag was not showing the result of rewriting in the
4594 debugging output unless log_rewrite was also set.
4596 60. Avoid a compiler warning on 64-bit systems in dsearch.c by avoiding the use
4597 of (int)(handle) when we know that handle contains (void *)(-1).
4599 61. The Exim daemon panic-logs an error return when it closes the incoming
4600 connection. However "connection reset by peer" seems to be common, and
4601 isn't really an error worthy of noting specially, so that particular error
4604 62. When Exim is trying to find all the local interfaces, it used to panic and
4605 die if the ioctl to get the interface flags failed. However, it seems that
4606 on at least one OS (Solaris 9) it is possible to have an interface that is
4607 included in the list of interfaces, but for which you get a failure error
4608 for this call. This happens when the interface is not "plumbed" into a
4609 protocol (i.e. neither IPv4 nor IPv6). I've changed the code so that a
4610 failure of the "get flags" call assumes that the interface is down.
4612 63. Added a ${eval10: operator, which assumes all numbers are decimal. This
4613 makes life easier for people who are doing arithmetic on fields extracted
4614 from dates, where you often get leading zeros that should not be
4615 interpreted as octal.
4617 64. Added qualify_domain to the redirect router, to override the global
4620 65. If a pathologically long header line contained very many addresses (the
4621 report of this problem mentioned 10 000) and each of them was rewritten,
4622 Exim could use up a very large amount of memory. (It kept on making new
4623 copies of the header line as it rewrote, and never released the old ones.)
4624 At the expense of a bit more processing, the header rewriting function has
4625 been changed so that it no longer eats memory in this way.
4627 66. The generation of the Received: header has been moved from the time that a
4628 message starts to be received, to the time that it finishes. The timestamp
4629 in the Received: header should now be very close to that of the <= log
4630 line. There are two side-effects of this change:
4632 (a) If a message is rejected by a DATA or non-SMTP ACL or local_scan(), the
4633 logged header lines no longer include the local Received: line, because
4634 it has not yet been created. The same applies to a copy of the message
4635 that is returned to a non-SMTP sender when a message is rejected.
4637 (b) When a filter file is tested using -bf, no additional Received: header
4638 is added to the test message. After some thought, I decided that this
4641 This change does not affect the value of $received_for. It is still set
4642 after address rewriting, but before local_scan() is called.
4644 67. Installed the latest Cygwin-specific files from the Cygwin maintainer.
4646 68. GnuTLS: If an empty file is specified for tls_verify_certificates, GnuTLS
4647 gave an unhelpful panic error message, and a defer error. I have managed to
4648 change this behaviour so that it now rejects any supplied certificate,
4649 which seems right, as the list of acceptable certificates is empty.
4651 69. OpenSSL: If an empty file is specified for tls_verify_certificates, OpenSSL
4652 gave an unhelpful defer error. I have not managed to make this reject any
4653 supplied certificates, but the error message it gives is "no certificate
4654 supplied", which is not helpful.
4656 70. exigrep's output now also includes lines that are not associated with any
4657 message, but which match the given pattern. Implemented by a patch from
4658 Martin Sluka, which also tidied up the Perl a bit.
4660 71. Recipient callout verification, like sender verification, was using <> in
4661 the MAIL FROM command. This isn't really the right thing, since the actual
4662 sender may affect whether the remote host accepts the recipient or not. I
4663 have changed it to use the actual sender in the callout; this means that
4664 the cache record is now keyed on a recipient/sender pair, not just the
4665 recipient address. There doesn't seem to be a real danger of callout loops,
4666 since a callout by the remote host to check the sender would use <>.
4667 [SEE ABOVE: changed after hitting problems.]
4669 72. Exim treats illegal SMTP error codes that do not begin with 4 or 5 as
4670 temporary errors. However, in the case of such a code being given after
4671 the end of a data transmission (i.e. after ".") Exim was failing to write
4672 a retry record for the message. (Yes, there was some broken host that was
4673 actually sending 8xx at this point.)
4675 73. An unknown lookup type in a host list could cause Exim to panic-die when
4676 the list was checked. (An example that provoked this was putting <; in the
4677 middle of a list instead of at the start.) If this happened during a DATA
4678 ACL check, a -D file could be left lying around. This kind of configuration
4679 error no longer causes Exim to die; instead it causes a defer errror. The
4680 incident is still logged to the main and panic logs.
4682 74. Buglet left over from Exim 3 conversion. The message "too many messages
4683 in one connection" was written to the rejectlog but not the mainlog, except
4684 when address rewriting (yes!) was being logged.
4686 75. Added write_rejectlog option.
4688 76. When a system filter was run not as root (that is, when system_filter_user
4689 was set), the values of the $n variables were not being returned to the
4690 main process; thus, they were not subsequently available in the $sn
4693 77. Added +return_path_on_delivery log selector.
4695 78. A connection timeout was being treated differently from recipients deferred
4696 when testing hosts_max_try with a message that was older than the host's
4697 retry timeout. (The host should not be counted, thus allowing all hosts to
4698 be tried at least once before bouncing.) This may have been the cause of an
4699 occasionally reported bug whereby a message would remain on the queue
4700 longer than the retry timeout, but would be bounced if a delivery was
4701 forced. I say "may" because I never totally pinned down the problem;
4702 setting up timeout/retry tests is difficult. See also the next item.
4704 79. The ultimate address timeout was not being applied to errors that involved
4705 a combination of host plus message (for example, a timeout on a MAIL
4706 command). When an address resolved to a number of possible hosts, and they
4707 were not all tried for each delivery (e.g. because of hosts_max_try), a
4708 message could remain on the queue longer than the retry timeout.
4710 80. Sieve bug: "stop" inside "elsif" was broken. Applied a patch from Michael
4713 81. Fixed an obscure SMTP outgoing bug which required at least the following
4714 conditions: (a) there was another message waiting for the same server;
4715 (b) the server returned 5xx to all RCPT commands in the first message so
4716 that the message was not completed; (c) the server dropped the connection
4717 or gave a negative response to the RSET that Exim sends to abort the
4718 transaction. The observed case was a dropped connection after DATA that had
4719 been sent in pipelining mode. That is, the server had advertised PIPELINING
4720 but was not implementing it correctly. The effect of the bug was incorrect
4721 behaviour, such as trying another host, and this could lead to a crash.
4727 1. The 3rd arguments to getsockname(), getpeername(), and accept() in exim.c
4728 and daemon.c were passed as pointers to ints; they should have been
4729 pointers to socklen_t variables (which are typically unsigned ints).
4731 2. Some signed/unsigned type warnings in the os.c file for Linux have been
4734 3. Fixed a really odd bug that affected only the testing scheme; patching a
4735 certain fixed string in the binary changed the value of another string that
4736 happened to be identical to the end of the original first string.
4738 4. When gethostbyname() (or equivalent) is passed an IP address as a "host
4739 name", it returns that address as the IP address. On some operating
4740 systems (e.g. Solaris), it also passes back the IP address string as the
4741 "host name". However, on others (e.g. Linux), it passes back an empty
4742 string. Exim wasn't checking for this, and was changing the host name to an
4743 empty string, assuming it had been canonicized.
4745 5. Although rare, it is permitted to have more than one PTR record for a given
4746 IP address. I thought that gethostbyaddr() or getipnodebyaddr() always gave
4747 all the names associated with an address, because they do in Solaris.
4748 However, it seems that they do not in Linux for data that comes from the
4749 DNS. If an address in /etc/hosts has multiple names, they _are_ all given.
4750 I found this out when I moved to a new Linux workstation and tried to run
4751 the Exim test suite.
4753 To get round this problem I have changed the code so that it now does its
4754 own call to the DNS to look up PTR records when searching for a host name.
4755 If nothing can be found in the DNS, it tries gethostbyaddr(), so that
4756 addresses that are only in /etc/hosts are still found.
4758 This behaviour is, however, controlled by an option called host_lookup_
4759 order, which defaults to "bydns:byaddr". If people want to use the other
4760 order, or indeed, just use one or the other means of lookup, they can
4761 specify it in this variable.
4763 6. If a PTR record yields an empty name, Exim treats it as non-existent. In
4764 some operating systems, this comes back from gethostbyaddr() as an empty
4765 string, and this is what Exim used to test for. However, it seems that in
4766 other systems, "." is yielded. Exim now tests for this case too.
4768 7. The values of check_spool_space and check_log_space are now held internally
4769 as a number of kilobytes instead of an absolute number of bytes. If a
4770 numbers is specified without 'K' or 'M', it is rounded up to the nearest
4771 kilobyte. This means that much larger values can be stored.
4773 8. Exim monitor: an attempt to get the action menu when not actually pointing
4774 at a message produces an empty menu entitled "No message selected". This
4775 works on Solaris (OpenWindows). However, XFree86 does not like a menu with
4776 no entries in it ("Shell widget menu has zero width and/or height"). So I
4777 have added a single, blank menu entry in this case.
4779 9. Added ${quote_local_part.
4781 10. MIME decoding is now applied to the contents of Subject: header lines when
4784 11. Now that a reference to $sender_host_address automatically causes a reverse
4785 lookup to occur if necessary (4.13/18), there is no need to arrange for a
4786 host lookup before query-style lookups in lists that might use this
4787 variable. This has therefore been abolished, and the "net-" prefix is no
4788 longer necessary for query-style lookups.
4790 12. The Makefile for SCO_SV contained a setting of LDFLAGS. This appears to
4791 have been a typo for LFLAGS, so it has been changed.
4793 13. The install script calls Exim with "-C /dev/null" in order to find the
4794 version number. If ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX was set, this caused an error message
4795 to be output. Howeve, since Exim outputs its version number before the
4796 error, it didn't break the script. It just looked ugly. I fixed this by
4797 always allowing "-C /dev/null" if the caller is root.
4799 14. Ignore overlarge ACL variable number when reading spool file - insurance
4800 against a later release with more variables having written the file.
4802 15. The standard form for an IPv6 address literal was being rejected by EHLO.
4803 Example: [IPv6:2002:c1ed:8229:10:202:2dff:fe07:a42a]. Exim now accepts
4804 this, as well as the form without the "IPv6" on the front.
4806 16. Added CHOWN_COMMAND=/usr/sbin/chown and LIBS=-lresolv to the
4807 OS/Makefile-Darwin file.
4809 17. Fixed typo in lookups/ldap.c: D_LOOKUP should be D_lookup. This applied
4810 only to LDAP libraries that do not have LDAP_OPT_DEREF.
4812 18. After change 4.21/52, "%ld" was used to format the contents of the $inode
4813 variable. However, some OS use ints for inodes. I've added cast to long int
4814 to get rid of the compiler warning.
4816 19. I had forgotten to lock out "/../" in configuration file names when
4817 ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX was set.
4819 20. Routers used for verification do not need to specify transports. However,
4820 if such a router generated a host list, and callout was configured, Exim
4821 crashed, because it could not find a port number from the (non-existent)
4822 transport. It now assumes port 25 in this circumstance.
4824 21. Added the -t option to exigrep.
4826 22. If LOOKUP_LSEARCH is defined, all three linear search methods (lsearch,
4827 wildlsearch, nwildlsearch) are compiled. LOOKUP_WILDLSEARCH and LOOKUP_
4828 NWILDLSEARCH are now obsolete, but retained for compatibility. If either of
4829 them is set, LOOKUP_LSEARCH is forced.
4831 23. "exim -bV" now outputs a list of lookups that are included in the binary.
4833 24. Added sender and host information to the "rejected by local_scan()" log
4834 line; previously there was no indication of these.
4836 25. Added .include_if_exists.
4838 26. Change 3.952/11 added an explicit directory sync on top of a file sync for
4839 Linux. It turns out that not all file systems support this. Apparently some
4840 versions of NFS do not. (It's rare to put Exim's spool on NFS, but people
4841 do it.) To cope with this, the error EINVAL, which means that sync-ing is
4842 not supported on the file descriptor, is now ignored when Exim is trying to
4843 sync a directory. This applies only to Linux.
4845 27. Added -DBIND_8_COMPAT to the CLFAGS setting for Darwin.
4847 28. In Darwin (MacOS X), the PAM headers are in /usr/include/pam and not in
4848 /usr/include/security. There's now a flag in OS/os.h-Darwin to cope with
4851 29. Added support for maildirsize files from supplied patch (modified a bit).
4853 30. The use of :fail: followed by an empty string could lead Exim to respond to
4854 sender verification failures with (e.g.):
4856 550 Verification failed for <xxx>
4857 550 Sender verify failed
4859 where the first response line was missing the '-' that indicates it is not
4860 the final line of the response.
4862 31. The loop for finding the name of the user that called Exim had a hardwired
4863 limit of 10; it now uses the value of finduser_retries, which is used for
4864 all other user lookups.
4866 32. Added $received_count variable, available in data and not_smtp ACLs, and at
4869 33. Exim was neglecting to zero errno before one call of strtol() when
4870 expanding a string and expecting an integer value. On some systems this
4871 resulted in spurious "integer overflow" errors. Also, it was casting the
4872 result into an int without checking.
4874 34. Testing for a connection timeout using "timeout_connect" in the retry rules
4875 did not work. The code looks as if it has *never* worked, though it appears
4876 to have been documented since at least releast 1.62. I have made it work.
4878 35. The "timeout_DNS" error in retry rules, also documented since at least
4879 1.62, also never worked. As it isn't clear exactly what this means, and
4880 clearly it isn't a major issue, I have abolished the feature by treating it
4881 as "timeout", and writing a warning to the main and panic logs.
4883 36. The display of retry rules for -brt wasn't always showing the error code
4886 37. Added new error conditions to retry rules: timeout_A, timeout_MX,
4887 timeout_connect_A, timeout_connect_MX.
4889 38. Rewriting the envelope sender at SMTP time did not allow it to be rewritten
4890 to the empty sender.
4892 39. The daemon was not analysing the content of -oX till after it had closed
4893 stderr and disconnected from the controlling terminal. This meant that any
4894 syntax errors were only noted on the panic log, and the return code from
4895 the command was 0. By re-arranging the code a little, I've made the
4896 decoding happen first, so such errors now appear on stderr, and the return
4897 code is 1. However, the actual setting up of the sockets still happens in
4898 the disconnected process, so errors there are still only recorded on the
4901 40. A daemon listener on a wildcard IPv6 socket that also accepts IPv4
4902 connections (as happens on some IP stacks) was logged at start up time as
4903 just listening for IPv6. It now logs "IPv6 with IPv4". This differentiates
4904 it from "IPv6 and IPv4", which means that two separate sockets are being
4907 41. The debug output for gethostbyname2() or getipnodebyname() failures now
4908 says whether AF_INET or AF_INET6 was passed as an argument.
4910 42. Exiwhat output was messed up when time zones were included in log
4913 43. Exiwhat now gives more information about the daemon's listening ports,
4914 and whether -tls-on-connect was used.
4916 44. The "port" option of the smtp transport is now expanded.

4940 52. Redirecting mail to an unqualified address in a Sieve filter caused Exim to
4943 53. Installed eximstats 1.29.
4945 54. Added transport_filter_timeout as a generic transport option.
4947 55. Exim no longer adds an empty Bcc: header to messages that have no To: or
4948 Cc: header lines. This was required by RFC 822, but it not required by RFC
4951 56. Exim used to add From:, Date:, and Message-Id: header lines to any
4952 incoming messages that did not have them. Now it does so only if the
4953 message originates locally, that is, if there is no associated remote host
4954 address. When Resent- header lines are present, this applies to the Resent-
4955 lines rather than the non-Resent- lines.
4957 57. Drop incoming SMTP connection after too many syntax or protocol errors. The
4958 limit is controlled by smtp_max_synprot_errors, defaulting to 3.
4960 58. Messages for configuration errors now include the name of the main
4961 configuration file - useful now that there may be more than one file in a
4962 list (.included file names were always shown).
4964 59. Change 4.21/82 (run initgroups() when starting the daemon) causes problems
4965 for those rare installations that do not start the daemon as root or run it
4966 setuid root. I've cut out the call to initgroups() if the daemon is not
4969 60. The Exim user and group can now be bound into the binary as text strings
4970 that are looked up at the start of Exim's processing.
4972 61. Applied a small patch for the Interbase code, supplied by Ard Biesheuvel.
4974 62. Added $mailstore_basename variable.
4976 63. Installed patch to sieve.c from Michael Haardt.
4978 64. When Exim failed to open the panic log after failing to open the main log,
4979 the original message it was trying to log was written to stderr and debug
4980 output, but if they were not available (the usual case in production), it
4981 was lost. Now it is written to syslog before the two lines that record the
4982 failures to open the logs.
4984 65. Users' Exim filters run in subprocesses under the user's uid. It is
4985 possible for a "deliver" command or an alias in a "personal" command to
4986 provoke an address rewrite. If logging of address rewriting is configured,
4987 this fails because the process is not running as root or exim. There may be
4988 a better way of dealing with this, but for the moment (because 4.30 needs
4989 to be released), I have disabled address rewrite logging when running a
4990 filter in a non-root, non-exim process.
4996 1. The buildconfig auxiliary program wasn't quoting the value set for
4997 HEADERS_CHARSET. This caused a compilation error complaining that 'ISO' was
4998 not defined. This bug was masked in 4.22 by the effect that was fixed in
5001 2. Some messages that were rejected after a message id was allocated were
5002 shown as "incomplete" by exigrep. It no longer does this for messages that
5003 are rejected by local_scan() or the DATA or non-SMTP ACLs.
5005 3. If a Message-ID: header used a domain literal in the ID, and Exim did not
5006 have allow_domain_literals set, the ID did not get logged in the <= line.
5007 Domain literals are now always recognized in Message-ID: header lines.
5009 4. The first argument for a ${extract expansion item is the key name or field
5010 number. Leading and trailing spaces in this item were not being ignored,
5011 causing some misleading effects.
5013 5. When deliver_drop_privilege was set, single queue runner processes started
5014 manually (i.e. by the command "exim -q") or by the daemon (which uses the
5015 same command in the process it spins off) were not dropping privilege.
5017 6. When the daemon running as "exim" started a queue runner, it always
5018 re-executed Exim in the spun-off process. This is a waste of effort when
5019 deliver_drop_privilege is set. The new process now just calls the
5020 queue-runner function directly.
5026 1. Typo in the src/EDITME file: it referred to HEADERS_DECODE_TO instead of
5029 2. Change 4.21/73 introduced a bug. The pid file path set by -oP was being
5030 ignored. Though the use of -oP was forcing the writing of a pid file, it
5031 was always written to the default place.
5033 3. If the message "no IP address found for host xxxx" is generated during
5034 incoming verification, it is now followed by identification of the incoming
5035 connection (so you can more easily find what provoked it).
5037 4. Bug fix for Sieve filters: "stop" inside a block was not working properly.
5039 5. Added some features to "harden" Exim a bit more against certain attacks:
5041 (a) There is now a build-time option called FIXED_NEVER_USERS that can
5042 be put in Local/Makefile. This is like the never_users runtime option,
5043 but it cannot be overridden. The default setting is "root".
5045 (b) If ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX is defined in Local/Makefile, it specifies a
5046 prefix string with which any file named in a -C command line option
5049 (c) If ALT_CONFIG_ROOT_ONLY is defined in Local/Makefile, root privilege
5050 is retained for -C and -D only if the caller of Exim is root. Without
5051 it, the exim user may also use -C and -D and retain privilege.
5053 (d) If DISABLE_D_OPTION is defined in Local/Makefile, the use of the -D
5054 command line option is disabled.
5056 6. Macro names set by the -D option must start with an upper case letter, just
5057 like macro names defined in the configuration file.
5059 7. Added "dereference=" facility to LDAP.
5061 8. Two instances of the typo "uknown" in the source files are fixed.
5063 9. If a PERL_COMMAND setting in Local/Makefile was not at the start of a line,
5064 the Configure-Makefile script screwed up while processing it.
5066 10. Incorporated PCRE 4.4.
5068 11. The SMTP synchronization check was not operating right at the start of an
5069 SMTP session. For example, it could not catch a HELO sent before the client
5070 waited for the greeting. There is now a check for outstanding input at the
5071 point when the greeting is written. Because of the duplex, asynchronous
5072 nature of TCP/IP, it cannot be perfect - the incorrect input may be on its
5073 way, but not yet received, when the check is performed.
5075 12. Added tcp_nodelay to make it possible to turn of the setting of TCP_NODELAY
5076 on TCP/IP sockets, because this apparently causes some broken clients to
5079 13. Installed revised OS/Makefile-CYGWIN and OS/os.c-cygwin (the .h file was
5080 unchanged) from the Cygwin maintainer.
5082 14. The code for -bV that shows what is in the binary showed "mbx" when maildir
5083 was supported instead of testing for mbx. Effectively a typo.
5085 15. The spa authenticator server code was not checking that the input it
5086 received was valid base64.
5088 16. The debug output line for the "set" modifier in ACLs was not showing the
5089 name of the variable that was being set.
5091 17. Code tidy: the variable type "vtype_string" was never used. Removed it.
5093 18. Previously, a reference to $sender_host_name did not cause a DNS reverse
5094 lookup on its own. Something else was needed to trigger the lookup. For
5095 example, a match in host_lookup or the need for a host name in a host list.
5096 Now, if $sender_host_name is referenced and the host name has not yet been
5097 looked up, a lookup is performed. If the lookup fails, the variable remains
5098 empty, and $host_lookup_failed is set to "1".
5100 19. Added "eqi" as a case-independent comparison operator.
5102 20. The saslauthd authentication condition could segfault if neither service
5103 nor realm was specified.
5105 21. If an overflowing value such as "2048M" was set for message_size_limit, the
5106 error message that was logged was misleading, and incoming SMTP
5107 connections were dropped. The message is now more accurate, and temporary
5108 errors are given to SMTP connections.
5110 22. In some error situations (such as 21 above) Exim rejects all SMTP commands
5111 (except RSET) with a 421 error, until QUIT is received. However, it was
5112 failing to send a response to QUIT.
5114 23. The HELO ACL was being run before the code for helo_try_verify_hosts,
5115 which made it impossible to use "verify = helo" in the HELO ACL. The HELO
5116 ACL is now run after the helo_try_verify_hosts code.
5118 24. "{MD5}" and "{SHA1}" are now recognized as equivalent to "{md5"} and
5119 "{sha1}" in the "crypteq" expansion condition (in fact the comparison is
5120 case-independent, so other case variants are also recognized). Apparently
5121 some systems use these upper case variants.
5123 25. If more than two messages were waiting for the same host, and a transport
5124 filter was specified for the transport, Exim sent two messages over the
5125 same TCP/IP connection, and then failed with "socket operation on non-
5126 socket" when it tried to send the third.
5128 26. Added Exim::debug_write and Exim::log_write for embedded Perl use.
5130 27. The extern definition of crypt16() in expand.c was not being excluded when
5131 the OS had its own crypt16() function.
5133 28. Added bounce_return_body as a new option, and bounce_return_size_limit
5134 as a preferred synonym for return_size_limit, both as an option and as an
5137 29. Added LIBS=-liconv to OS/Makefile-OSF1.
5139 30. Changed the default configuration ACL to relax the local part checking rule
5140 for addresses that are not in any local domains. For these addresses,
5141 slashes and pipe symbols are allowed within local parts, but the sequence
5142 /../ is explicitly forbidden.
5144 31. SPA server authentication was not clearing the challenge buffer before
5147 32. log_message in a "warn" ACL statement was writing to the reject log as
5148 well as to the main log, which contradicts the documentation and doesn't
5149 seem right (because no rejection is happening). So I have stopped it.
5151 33. Added Ard Biesheuvel's lookup code for accessing an Interbase database.
5152 However, I am unable to do any testing of this.
5154 34. Fixed an infelicity in the appendfile transport. When checking directories
5155 for a mailbox, to see if any needed to be created, it was accidentally
5156 using path names with one or more superfluous leading slashes; tracing
5157 would show up entries such as stat("///home/ph10", 0xFFBEEA48).
5159 35. If log_message is set on a "discard" verb in a MAIL or RCPT ACL, its
5160 contents are added to the log line that is written for every discarded
5161 recipient. (Previously a log_message setting was ignored.)
5163 36. The ${quote: operator now quotes the string if it is empty.
5165 37. The install script runs exim in order to find its version number. If for
5166 some reason other than non-existence or emptiness, which it checks, it
5167 could not run './exim', it was installing it with an empty version number,
5168 i.e. as "exim-". This error state is now caught, and the installation is
5171 38. An argument was missing from the function that creates an error message
5172 when Exim fails to connect to the socket for saslauthd authentication.
5173 This could cause Exim to crash, or give a corrupted message.
5175 39. Added isip, isip4, and isip6 to ${if conditions.
5177 40. The ACL variables $acl_xx are now saved with the message, and can be
5178 accessed later in routers, transports, and filters.
5180 41. The new lookup type nwildlsearch is like wildlsearch, except that the key
5181 strings in the file are not string-expanded.
5183 42. If a MAIL command specified a SIZE value that was too large to fit into an
5184 int variable, the check against message_size_limit failed. Such values are
5185 now forced to INT_MAX, which is around 2Gb for a 32-bit variable. Maybe one
5186 day this will have to be increased, but I don't think I want to be around
5187 when emails are that large.
5194 1. Removed HAVE_ICONV=yes from OS/Makefile-FreeBSD, since it seems that
5195 iconv() is not standard in FreeBSD.
5197 2. Change 4.21/17 was buggy and could cause stack overwriting on a system with
5198 IPv6 enabled. The observed symptom was a segmentation fault on return from
5199 the function os_common_find_running_interfaces() in src/os.c.
5201 3. In the check_special_case() function in daemon.c I had used "errno" as an
5202 argument name, which causes warnings on some systems. This was basically a
5203 typo, since it was named "eno" in the comments!
5205 4. The code that waits for the clock to tick (at a resolution of some fraction
5206 of a second) so as to ensure message-id uniqueness was always waiting for
5207 at least one whole tick, when it could have waited for less. [This is
5208 almost certainly not relevant at current processor speeds, where it is
5209 unlikely to ever wait at all. But we try to future-proof.]
5211 5. The function that sleeps for a time interval that includes fractions of a
5212 second contained a race. It did not block SIGALRM between setting the
5213 timer, and suspending (a couple of lines later). If the interval was short
5214 and the sigsuspend() was delayed until after it had expired, the suspension
5215 never ended. On busy systems this could lead to processes getting stuck for
5218 6. Some uncommon configurations may cause a lookup to happen in a queue runner
5219 process, before it forks any delivery processes. The open lookup caching
5220 mechanism meant that the open file or database connection was passed into
5221 the delivery process. The problem was that delivery processes always tidy
5222 up cached lookup data. This could cause a problem for the next delivery
5223 process started by the queue runner, because the external queue runner
5224 process does not know about the closure. So the next delivery process
5225 still has data in the lookup cache. In the case of a file lookup, there was
5226 no problem because closing a file descriptor in a subprocess doesn't affect
5227 the parent. However, if the lookup was caching a connection to a database,
5228 the connection was closed, and the second delivery process was likely to
5229 see errors such as "PGSQL: query failed: server closed the connection
5230 unexpectedly". The problem has been fixed by closing all cached lookups
5231 in a queue runner before running a delivery process.
5233 7. Compiler warning on Linux for the second argument of iconv(), which doesn't
5234 seem to have the "const" qualifier which it has on other OS. I've
5237 8. Change 4.21/2 was too strict. It is only if there are two authenticators
5238 *of the same type* (client or server) with the same public name that an
5239 error should be diagnosed.
5241 9. When Exim looked up a host name for an IP address, but failed to find the
5242 original IP address when looking up the host name (a safety check), it
5243 output the message "<ip address> does not match any IP for NULL", which was
5244 confusing, to say the least. The bug was that the host name should have
5245 appeared instead of "NULL".
5247 10. Since release 3.03, if Exim is called by a uid other than root or the Exim
5248 user that is built into the binary, and the -C or -D options is used, root
5249 privilege is dropped before the configuration file is read. In addition,
5250 logging is switched to stderr instead of the normal log files. If the
5251 configuration then re-defines the Exim user, the unprivileged environment
5252 is probably not what is expected, so Exim logs a panic warning message (but
5255 However, if deliver_drop_privilege is set, the unprivileged state may well
5256 be exactly what is intended, so the warning has been cut out in that case,
5257 and Exim is allowed to try to write to its normal log files.
5263 1. smtp_return_error_details was not giving details for temporary sender
5264 or receiver verification errors.
5266 2. Diagnose a configuration error if two authenticators have the same public
5269 3. Exim used not to create the message log file for a message until the first
5270 delivery attempt. This could be confusing when incoming messages were held
5271 for policy or load reasons. The message log file is now created at the time
5272 the message is received, and an initial "Received" line is written to it.
5274 4. The automatically generated man page for command line options had a minor
5275 bug that caused no ill effects; however, a more serious problem was that
5276 the procedure for building the man page automatically didn't always
5277 operate. Consequently, release 4.20 contains an out-of-date version. This
5278 shouldn't happen again.
5280 5. When building Exim with embedded Perl support, the script that builds the
5281 Makefile was calling 'perl' to find its compile-time parameters, ignoring
5282 any setting of PERL_COMMAND in Local/Makefile. This is now fixed.
5284 6. The freeze_tell option was not being used for messages that were frozen on
5285 arrival, either by an ACL or by local_scan().
5287 7. Added the smtp_incomplete_transaction log selector.
5289 8. After STARTTLS, Exim was not forgetting that it had advertised AUTH, so it
5290 was accepting AUTH without a new EHLO.
5292 9. Added tls_remember_esmtp to cope with YAEB. This allows AUTH and other
5293 ESMTP extensions after STARTTLS without a new EHLO, in contravention of the
5296 10. Logging of TCP/IP connections (when configured) now happens in the main
5297 daemon process instead of the child process, so that the TCP/IP connection
5298 count is more accurate (but it can never be perfect).
5300 11. The use of "drop" in a nested ACL was not being handled correctly in the
5301 outer ACL. Now, if condition failure induced by the nested "drop" causes
5302 the outer ACL verb to deny access ("accept" or "discard" after "endpass",
5303 or "require"), the connection is dropped.
5305 12. Similarly, "discard" in a nested ACL wasn't being handled. A nested ACL
5306 that yield "discard" can now be used with an "accept" or a "discard" verb,
5307 but an error is generated for any others (because I can't see a useful way
5308 to define what should happen).
5310 13. When an ACL is read dynamically from a file (or anywhere else), the lines
5311 are now processed in the same way as lines in the Exim configuration file.
5312 In particular, continuation lines are supported.
5314 14. Added the "dnslists = a.b.c!=n.n.n.n" feature.
5316 15. Added -ti meaning -t -i.
5318 16. Check for letters, digits, hyphens, and dots in the names of dnslist
5319 domains, and warn by logging if others are found.
5321 17. At least on BSD, alignment is not guarenteed for the array of ifreq's
5322 returned from GIFCONF when Exim is trying to find the list of interfaces on
5323 a host. The code in os.c has been modified to copy each ifreq to an aligned
5324 structure in all cases.
5326 Also, in some cases, the returned ifreq's were being copied to a 'struct
5327 ifreq' on the stack, which was subsequently passed to host_ntoa(). That
5328 means the last couple of bytes of an IPv6 address could be chopped if the
5329 ifreq contained only a normal sockaddr (14 bytes storage).
5331 18. Named domain lists were not supported in the hosts_treat_as_local option.
5332 An entry such as +xxxx was not recognized, and was treated as a literal
5335 19. Ensure that header lines added by a DATA ACL are included in the reject log
5336 if the ACL subsequently rejects the message.
5338 20. Upgrade the cramtest.pl utility script to use Digest::MD5 instead of just
5339 MD5 (which is deprecated).
5341 21. When testing a filter file using -bf, Exim was writing a message when it
5342 took the sender from a "From " line in the message, but it was not doing so
5343 when it took $return_path from a Return-Path: header line. It now does.
5345 22. If the contents of a "message" modifier for a "warn" ACL verb do not begin
5346 with a valid header line field name (a series of printing characters
5347 terminated by a colon, Exim now inserts X-ACL-Warn: at the beginning.
5349 23. Changed "disc" in the source to "disk" to conform to the documentation and
5350 the book and for uniformity.
5352 24. Ignore Sendmail's -Ooption=value command line item.
5354 25. When execve() failed while trying to run a command in a pipe transport,
5355 Exim was returning EX_UNAVAILBLE (69) from the subprocess. However, this
5356 could be confused with a return value of 69 from the command itself. This
5357 has been changed to 127, the value the shell returns if it is asked to run
5358 a non-existent command. The wording for the related log line suggests a
5359 non-existent command as the problem.
5361 26. If received_header_text expands to an empty string, do not add a Received:
5362 header line to the message. (Well, it adds a token one on the spool, but
5363 marks it "old" so that it doesn't get used or transmitted.)
5365 27. Installed eximstats 1.28 (addition of -nt option).
5367 28. There was no check for failure on the call to getsockname() in the daemon
5368 code. This can fail if there is a shortage of resources on the system, with
5369 ENOMEM, for example. A temporary error is now given on failure.
5371 29. Contrary to the C standard, it seems that in some environments, the
5372 equivalent of setlocale(LC_ALL, "C") is not obeyed at the start of a C
5373 program. Exim now does this explicitly; it affects the formatting of
5374 timestamps using strftime().
5376 30. If exiqsumm was given junk data, it threw up some uninitialized variable
5377 complaints. I've now initialized all the variables, to avoid this.
5379 32. Header lines added by a system filter were not being "seen" during
5380 transport-time rewrites.
5382 33. The info_callback() function passed to OpenSSL is set up with type void
5383 (*)(SSL *, int, int), as described somewhere. However, when calling the
5384 function (actually a macro) that sets it up, the type void(*)() is
5385 expected. I've put in a cast to prevent warnings from picky compilers.
5387 34. If a DNS black list lookup found a CNAME record, but there were no A
5388 records associated with the domain it pointed at, Exim crashed.
5390 35. If a DNS black list lookup returned more than one A record, Exim ignored
5391 all but the first. It now scans all returned addresses if a particular IP
5392 value is being sought. In this situation, the contents of the
5393 $dnslist_value variable are a list of all the addresses, separated by a
5396 36. Tightened up the rules for host name lookups using reverse DNS. Exim used
5397 to accept a host name and all its aliases if the forward lookup for any of
5398 them yielded the IP address of the incoming connection. Now it accepts only
5399 those names whose forward lookup yields the correct IP address. Any other
5400 names are discarded. This closes a loophole whereby a rogue DNS
5401 administrator could create reverse DNS records to break through a
5402 wildcarded host restriction in an ACL.
5404 37. If a user filter or a system filter that ran in a subprocess used any of
5405 the numerical variables ($1, $2 etc), or $thisaddress, in a pipe command,
5406 the wrong values were passed to the pipe command ($thisaddress had the
5407 value of $0, $0 had the value of $1, etc). This bug was introduced by
5408 change 4.11/101, and not discovered because I wrote an inadequate test. :-(
5410 38. Improved the line breaking for long SMTP error messages from ACLs.
5411 Previously, if there was no break point between 40 and 75 characters, Exim
5412 left the rest of the message alone. Two changes have been made: (a) I've
5413 reduced the minimum length to 35 characters; (b) if it can't find a break
5414 point between 35 and 75 characters, it looks ahead and uses the first one
5415 that it finds. This may give the occasional overlong line, but at least the
5416 remaining text gets split now.
5418 39. Change 82 of 4.11 was unimaginative. It assumed the limit on the number of
5419 file descriptors might be low, and that setting 1000 would always raise it.
5420 It turns out that in some environments, the limit is already over 1000 and
5421 that lowering it causes trouble. So now Exim takes care not to decrease it.
5423 40. When delivering a message, the value of $return_path is set to $sender_
5424 address at the start of routing (routers may change the value). By an
5425 oversight, this default was not being set up when an address was tested by
5426 -bt or -bv, which affected the outcome if any router or filter referred to
5429 41. The idea of the "warn" ACL verb is that it adds a header or writes to the
5430 log only when "message" or "log_message" are set. However, if one of the
5431 conditions was an address verification, or a call to a nested ACL, the
5432 messages generated by the underlying test were being passed through. This
5433 no longer happens. The underlying message is available in $acl_verify_
5434 message for both "message" and "log_message" expansions, so it can be
5435 passed through if needed.
5437 42. Added RFC 2047 interpretation of header lines for $h_ expansions, with a
5438 new expansion $bh_ to give the encoded byte string without charset
5439 translation. Translation happens only if iconv() is available; HAVE_ICONV
5440 indicates this at build time. HEADERS_CHARSET gives the charset to
5441 translate to; headers_charset can change it in the configuration, and
5442 "headers charset" can change it in an individual filter file.
5444 43. Now that we have a default RFC 2047 charset (see above), the code in Exim
5445 that creates RFC 2047 encoded "words" labels them as that charset instead
5446 of always using iso-8859-1. The cases are (i) the explicit ${rfc2047:
5447 expansion operator; (ii) when Exim creates a From: line for a local
5448 message; (iii) when a header line is rewritten to include a "phrase" part.
5450 44. Nasty bug in exiqsumm: the regex to skip already-delivered addresses was
5451 buggy, causing it to skip the first lines of messages whose message ID
5452 ended in 'D'. This would not have bitten before Exim release 4.14, because
5453 message IDs were unlikely to end in 'D' before then. The effect was to have
5454 incorrect size information for certain domains.
5456 45. #include "config.h" was missing at the start of the crypt16.c module. This
5457 caused trouble on Tru64 (aka OSF1) systems, because HAVE_CRYPT16 was not
5460 46. If there was a timeout during a "random" callout check, Exim treated it as
5461 a failure of the random address, and carried on sending RSET and the real
5462 address. If the delay was just some slowness somewhere, the response to the
5463 original RCPT would be taken as a response to RSET and so on, causing
5464 mayhem of various kinds.
5466 47. Change 50 for 4.20 was a heap of junk. I don't know what I was thinking
5467 when I implemented it. It didn't allow for the fact that some option values
5468 may legitimatetly be negative (e.g. size_addition), and it didn't even do
5469 the right test for positive values.
5471 48. Domain names in DNS records are case-independent. Exim always looks them up
5472 in lower case. Some resolvers return domain names in exactly the case they
5473 appear in the zone file, that is, they may contain uppercase letters. Not
5474 all resolvers do this - some return always lower case. Exim was treating a
5475 change of case by a resolver as a change of domain, similar to a widening
5476 of a domain abbreviation. This triggered its re-routing code and so it was
5477 trying to route what was effectively the same domain again. This normally
5478 caused routing to fail (because the router wouldn't handle the domain
5479 twice). Now Exim checks for this case specially, and just changes the
5480 casing of the domain that it ultimately uses when it transmits the message
5483 49. Added Sieve (RFC 3028) support, courtesy of Michael Haardt's contributed
5486 50. If a filter generated a file delivery with a non-absolute name (possible if
5487 no home directory exists for the router), the forbid_file option was not
5490 51. Added '&' feature to dnslists, to provide bit mask matching in addition to
5491 the existing equality matching.
5493 52. Exim was using ints instead of ino_t variables in some places where it was
5494 dealing with inode numbers.
5496 53. If TMPDIR is defined in Local/Makefile (default in src/EDITME is
5497 TMPDIR="/tmp"), Exim checks for the presence of an environment variable
5498 called TMPDIR, and if it finds it is different, it changes its value.
5500 54. The smtp_printf() function is now made available to local_scan() so
5501 additional output lines can be written before returning. There is also an
5502 smtp_fflush() function to enable the detection of a dropped connection.
5503 The variables smtp_input and smtp_batched_input are exported to
5506 55. Changed the default runtime configuration: the message "Unknown user"
5507 has been removed from the ACL, and instead placed on the localuser router,
5508 using the cannot_route_message feature. This means that any verification
5509 failures that generate their own messages won't get overridden. Similarly,
5510 the "Unrouteable address" message that was in the ACL for unverifiable
5511 relay addresses has also been removed.
5513 56. Added hosts_avoid_esmtp to the smtp transport.
5515 57. The exicyclog script was not checking for the esoteric option
5516 CONFIGURE_FILE_USE_EUID in the Local/Makefile. It now does this, but it
5517 will work only if exicyclog is run under the appropriate euid.
5519 58. Following a discussion on the list, the rules by which Exim recognises line
5520 endings on incoming messages have been changed. The -dropcr and drop_cr
5521 options are now no-ops, retained only for backwards compatibility. The
5522 following line terminators are recognized: LF CRLF CR. However, special
5523 processing applies to CR:
5525 (i) The sequence CR . CR does *not* terminate an incoming SMTP message,
5526 nor a local message in the state where . is a terminator.
5528 (ii) If a bare CR is encountered in a header line, an extra space is added
5529 after the line terminator so as not to end the header. The reasoning
5530 behind this is that bare CRs in header lines are most likely either
5531 to be mistakes, or people trying to play silly games.
5533 59. The size of a message, as listed by "-bp" or in the Exim monitor window,
5534 was being incorrectly given as 18 bytes larger than it should have been.
5535 This is a VOB (very old bug).
5537 60. This may never have affected anything current, but just in case it has:
5538 When the local host is found other than at the start of a list of hosts,
5539 the local host, those with the same MX, and any that follow, are discarded.
5540 When the list in question was part of a longer list of hosts, the following
5541 hosts (not currently being processed) were also being discarded. This no
5542 longer happens. I'm not sure if this situation could ever has previously
5545 61. Added the "/MX" feature to lists of hosts in the manualroute and query
5548 62. Whenever Exim generates a new message, it now adds an Auto-Submitted:
5549 header. This is something that is recommended in a new Internet Draft, and
5550 is something that is documented as being done by Sendmail. There are two
5551 possible values. For messages generated by the autoreply transport, Exim
5554 Auto-Submitted: auto-replied
5556 whereas for all other generated messages (e.g. bounces) it adds
5558 Auto-Submitted: auto-generated
5560 63. The "personal" condition in filters now includes a test for the
5561 Auto-Submitted: header. If it contains the string "auto-" the message it
5562 not considered personal.
5564 64. Added rcpt_include_affixes as a generic transport option.
5566 65. Added queue_only_override (default true).
5568 66. Added the syslog_duplication option.
5570 67. If what should have been the first header line of a message consisted of
5571 a space followed by a colon, Exim was mis-interpreting it as a header line.
5572 It isn't of course - it is syntactically invalid and should therefore be
5573 treated as the start of the message body. The misbehaviour could have
5574 caused a number of strange effects, including loss of data in subsequent
5575 header lines, and spool format errors.
5577 68. Formerly, the AUTH parameter on a MAIL command was trusted only if the
5578 client host had authenticated. This control can now be exercised by an ACL
5579 for more flexibility.
5581 69. By default, callouts do not happen when testing with -bh. There is now a
5582 variant, -bhc, which does actually run the callout code, including
5583 consulting and updating the callout cache.
5585 70. Added support for saslauthd authentication, courtesy of Alexander
5588 71. If statvfs() failed on the spool or log directories while checking their
5589 size for availability, Exim confusingly gave the error "space shortage".
5590 Furthermore, in debugging mode it crashed with a floating point exception.
5591 These checks are done if check_{spool,log}_{space,inodes} are set, and when
5592 an SMTP message arrives with SIZE= on the MAIL command. As this is a really
5593 serious problem, Exim now writes to the main and panic logs when this
5594 happens, with details of the failure. It then refuses to accept the
5595 incoming message, giving the message "spool directory problem" or "log
5596 directory problem" with a 421 code for SMTP messages.
5598 72. When Exim is about to re-exec itself, it ensures that the file descriptors
5599 0, 1, and 2 exist, because some OS complain for execs without them (see
5600 ChangeLog 4.05/30). If necessary, Exim opens /dev/null to use for these
5601 descriptors. However, the code omitted to check that the open succeeded,
5602 causing mysterious errors if for some reason the permissions on /dev/null
5603 got screwed. Now Exim writes a message to the main and panic logs, and
5604 bombs out if it can't open /dev/null.
5606 73. Re-vamped the way daemon_smtp_port, local_interfaces, and -oX work and
5607 interact so that it is all more flexible. It is supposed to remain
5608 backwards compatible. Also added extra_local_interfaces.
5610 74. Invalid data sent to a SPA (NTLM) server authenticator could cause the code
5611 to bomb out with an assertion failure - to the client this appears as a
5612 connection drop. This problem occurs in the part of the code that was taken
5613 from the Samba project. Fortunately, the assertion is in a very simple
5614 function, so I have fixed this by reproducing the function inline in the
5615 one place where it is called, and arranging for authentication to fail
5616 instead of killing the process with assert().
5618 75. The SPA client code was not working when the server requested OEM rather
5619 than Unicode encoding.
5621 76. Added code to make require_files with a specific uid setting more usable in
5622 the case where statting the file as root fails - usually a non-root-mounted
5623 NFS file system. When this happens and the failure is EACCES, Exim now
5624 forks a subprocess and does the per-uid checking as the relevant uid.
5626 77. Added process_log_path.
5628 78. If log_file_path was not explicitly set, a setting of check_log_space or
5629 check_log_inodes was ignored.
5631 79. If a space check for the spool or log partitions fails, the incident is now
5632 logged. Of course, in the latter case the data may get lost...
5634 80. Added the %p formatting code to string_format() so that it can be used to
5635 print addresses in debug_print(). Adjusted all the address printing in the
5636 debugging in store.c to use %p rather than %d.
5638 81. There was a concern that a line of code in smtp_in.c could overflow a
5639 buffer if a HELO/EHLO command was given followed by 500 or so spaces. As
5640 initially expressed, the concern was not well-founded, because trailing
5641 spaces are removed early. However, if the trailing spaces were followed by
5642 a NULL, they did not get removed, so the overflow was possible. Two fixes
5645 (a) I re-wrote the offending code in a cleaner fashion.
5646 (b) If an incoming SMTP command contains a NULL character, it is rejected
5649 82. When Exim changes uid/gid to the Exim user at daemon start time, it now
5650 runs initgroups(), so that if the Exim user is in any additional groups,
5651 they will be used during message reception.
